" PEERLESS DYE $ A CUBAN QIRL'S HEROIC DEED , Slio CnrTlcs Peed and Slccllclnc to Kcror-Strlckon Prisoners. I nm a Cuban and I love Cuba , snys Senor Rcmonriz in the Niishvillo Amer ican , yet tbo extreme heat of some months ot cnch ycnr is unbearable. You rcmombor the entrance to Havana hnrbor is guarded by Morro ciistlo. The garrison numbers 200 men. Three years npo last Juno the temperature rose be yond nil previous iocords , and the suf fering was intense. The authorities wore dreading the possible invasion of Cuba's deadliest Bcoorgo yellow-fovcr. News cnme to the city of the breaking1 out of the fever at the castlo. limned- 'ntoly slops wore tnUon for the complete . ' "tion of the fort. No boats wcro al- > lanu from the infected locality nnd rt rjio were bravo enough to venture the casting of their lot with the gar rison. At sunset daeh dnj wo watched the gates open and funeral corteges wind their way down the hill to tno little garrison cemetery ; wo listened for the volleys of salnio , their number denoting how iimny bravo follows bad succumbed that day. Ono evening , as wo apatheti cally gazed across the water , a boat shot forth from the plor of Havana. It was loaded to the gunwales with provisions and medicines , and none in that crowd needed to be told Its destination. Our eyes then bought the guldor of the little craft , and , to our horror saw the solo oc cupant was a woman. Then a universal Bhout of ifrotcst came to latCi She paused an instant from her rowing and silenced our inurmurings with a wave of her small hand. "I am alone , " she said , "from all Ha vana not one regret will follow me. 'Tis bettor that t'flhoula go than a life upon whoso tcnuro hangB the fate of others. . " Good-by. Wo strained our eyes across the water ; watched her strokes grow slower nnd slower as the awful heat supped her life and finally pause exhausted bo- ncnth Castle Morro's walls. Those faithful souls , bravo and constant to the last , refused admission , though wo could fool the hunger and longing expressed - pressed in their long suffering oyos. At length faint resistance censed they ougerly came down to the woicomo boat , fairly lifted their angel of mercy on waiting shoulders anil , foljowe" others bearing luo medicine 1 < ? many poor follows will owe their were lost to our view within the castle walls. The first ofTeot wo noted was the re duction in the number of salutes over the soldiers' graves : then end blessed morning , when a breeze all but c ol , came straight from jour northlaml , the distress signal wan hauled down , and again the royal flag of Spain floated piondly from the battlements denoting all was well within. Instantly the bay was dotted with boats. Wo flocked to the castle and exchanged congratula tions with the governor and his badly decimated garrison. Wo learned that undoubtedly not a Hfo would have boon preserved had It not boon for the bravo maiden's timely succor. Kow , there , gontlcmcn , is an Incident of the land of heat. " "Yes , what became of the girl1 anx iously inquired the Long Islander. "She is the happy wife of the gover nor of the castle and is the idol of all Havana. " A Voudoo Qucon. There is an unprecedented sensation among the colored people in the black district , the cauco of it being a woman who is working , it is allegedmarvelous faith cures in Nash county , says a Raleigh dispatch to the Atlanta Con stitution. The woman is an African of the most pronounced typo. A gentle man visited the ground consecrated to the priestcbs on conjurations nnd faith cures. IIo found the roads for hun dreds of yards leading to the spot cum bered with vehicles of every conceivable - blo characloi'all convoying the alllicted in body and mind. The woman receives her devotees and cries uloud.in a pecul iarly deep voice , exorcising- the evil spirits of disease , imaginary or real. Then she anoints Iho in with water drawn from a well near by , at the same time lequiring the patient to imbibe a portion. The spot , she claims , was pointed out to her by 1111 angol. These bounces linvo boon going on for ton dayb. Each day brings a crowd greater than that of the day before. The woman lllls bottles with water , blesses them , and these are carried off in countless numbers. She makes no charge , but accepts whatever may bo given her. Excitement runs high and is wide spread. The multitudes that place im plicit faith in the efllcacy of her cures are astoundingly large and coiihtantly swelling. The woman's name it. Mary Edwards. She i * about thirty-two ycai&of ago. The gentleman who vis ited her ontoieda doubli' houao , and found the ftont room crammed end jammed with all ages and bi/es and both sexes. Ono at a time is added to Iho inner sanctuary. The wonmn avers thai she was born entirely white , and that the knowledge of her mysterious and marvollouh pow ers cnmo with her dawning reason. She has followed her piesont calling some time , and it it , reported that she has taken in nearly 31.01)0 ) in the four wcclcs she has been established at her present ( juartors Pei&onsfrom many countries visit and seek relief at her hands. Her wbllo patients arc not small in number. Cheats In Kvory Trado. "There are cheats in every trade , " said a florist recently to a Troy ( N. Y. ) Times reporter , "but in none at o they more frequently mot than in ours."The remark was caused by a lady who passed by , holding a bunch of roses inner nor hands , "Doion see that lady ? " asked the flower man. "Well , she has just been cheated. She came in hero an hour ago and asked our prices for Marechal Niel roses. I told her from 81.fiO to $2 a do70ii , She said she could buy them elsewhere for 85 cents , and walked out. Now , what has she bought ? Simple Porlo de.s.Jardin roeh , which are worth 60 cents a do/en. An otdinary observer cannot toll Iho dillor- once between the two varieties. Tbo Niol is a softer , richer yellow than the Porlo , which has crisp , sharply-outlined leaves. The stem of the Porlo is long , straight , stilt and thorny , and rod and green are mlxod together in blended linos. The stem of the Niol is small and tendei is much smoother than the Porlo. Another cheat is the making of bridal bouqiroU of orange blossoms. Not ono bride in 500 who is described ns wearing orange bloa ems is so fortunate as to have thorn. An orange-Honor wreath or bouquet would cose from $15 to WO ; so the doaioru take stephanotis blossoms , worth from $3 to $5 , and array tlio unsuspecting maiden at a lessor price but greater profit. English violets nro worth $1.50 nor hundred , and uro used to make the letters in sot designs. For those are substituted immortelles , colored purple , and worth IScentsahundred. J recent ly saw a "Gates ajar" madn of immor telles which coat probably .
