from the city. The grounds arc mosl ad
mirably suited to their present purpose.
They are situated In the northeastern portion
of Iho city , nnd nt nn elevation which com

southern portion of Omaha ns well. A
succession of terraces rises from the street
to a beautiful spot. It Is well protected nnd
shaded by woody hills upon either hand. A
broad lawn stretches nwny from the build
ings upon lliree sides. Surrounding the
building , which Is n substantial brick
structure , nro piazzas , which give a happy
relief in tno architectural design ,
Entering n spacious hall you pass Into the
fiont room or parlor proper. Adjoining this
is Is the medicine dispensary and operating
room combined. At the icar of these Is
what will bo the industrial department , or
sewing room , while back of nil is Iho kitchen
proper , which will bo used ns a dining
room for the patients. Directly back of the
hull is the mule ward. This is n very largo
rotxn , having space for six or more cots.
Adjoining this nt the rear is u privnto room
for gentlemen , and connecting with this n
commodious bath-rooin. In the basement

the length of the building. Opening
from this nro two private rooms for
patients , and two others , whicli from
their location are Iho finest in Iho building.
These command a view of Hie south nnd west
which is us beautiful ns it is expansive.
Upon this iloor , also , Is the chnpel , which
has been lilted up elegantly. At the front is
the woman's ward , which sustains the satno
relation to the whole ns the same below ,
whicli is devoted to the male patients. At
the head of the stnirs is n commodious linen
closet. All of the rooms nro supplied with
tliis most necessary adjunct to a perfect
house. The sisters' dormitory occupies the
third story in the main building , while the
room for the help is just back of this. All of
the rooms are large , with high ceilings ,
which gives perfect ventilation and plenty of
light. Water Is supplied to every portion of
the house , and the arrangements for heating
nre the best possible to bo secured. The
sisters nro fortunate indeed in haying such
a valuable and well arranged hospital. The
patients now there , live in number , are
chanty patients. This c in bo truly said lo
Iho credit of Iho order of which thcso noble
women form n part , that no case of Buffering

PAIN THE CAUSE-
Many Curious TlilngH Learned AVnllc
in a Trance.
Mrs. Emma Althousc , of Bennington
Hill , while suffering from abscesses in
the bowels last August , fell into the first
of n series of what are supposed by
many to have been modi Jinibtic trances ,
says a special to the Now York World.
The attending physician applied every
remedy known to medical practice , but
the patient remained unconscious for
three days and nights , during all that
time not opening her eyes nor uttering
ono word. It was impossible to give her
any food except a few drops of water or
milk , which sac was , however , scarcely
able to swallow , pwing to delirious clos
ing of the teeth. ' At the end of three
days the doutor finally succeeded in-
arousing her , and she lay wide nwuko
for several days , expressing no desire
for either food , drink or sleep. During
this waking spell the abscesses ngain
gathered , and then she would again be
come unconscious for several days from
exhaustion , during which nature was
said to be working its gradual cure.
On Sunday , February 26 , she awoke
from a fourteen days' nap. Her flrbt
inquiry was about the Albert children ,
nine of whom had died of dipthoria
during the interval of her btrango ill
ness. She relates the circumstances
and time of each death occuring during
her so-called trance.
After her longest sleep of thirty-three
days , which commenced March 11 and
ended April 13 , she told of her grand
father's death , which occurred at Mum-
ford , N. Y. , March 13. Her attendants
contradicted her , but she insisted on
the fact , describing the manner and
hour of his death. Since this long spell
she had several briefer ones , lasting
from One to eight days , and is now
able to retain about a cupful of milk per
dsiy. She has been awake since May 11.
Her pulse is 100 ; temperature , 9 ! ) 8-10.
She declines to give her impression
while asleep , nor how she can fortell
the date and duration of her trances.
Her husband , who is said to have left
her shortly after the birth of her boy
Alvay , in the summer of 1884 , is never
mentioned. She will bo twenty-four
years old in July. Her father , a mason
named Toms , has lived in Attica for the
past twenty-live years.
During the first five months of her
strange allliction Mrs. Athouso lived
almost entirely on air , for the small
quantities of water , administered by
the teaspoonful , wcro generally wasted
upon the surface of her lips. The at
tending physician now expresses hope
of her ultimate recovery. Ho says
these trances are the result of joxhaus-
tion from the otTccts of pain , and the
long period's of unconsciousness have
saved her life.

In the center of the building is a square
courtyard filled with magnificent flow
ers , with u fountain in the center. The
doors of each apartment in the house
ouou on the wide veranda , which runs
around the courtyard , and the effect 5a
very charming. The walls of the build
ing are nearly three feet in thickness ,
giving opportunity for deep , cushioned
window seats. These thick walla keep
out cold in the winter and heat in the
summer , and there are , therefore , but
two fireplaces in the whole house for
use in the event of extraordinary severe
weather. The decorations of the dwell
ings are such as Qjie finds in Atlanta's
Pcaehtrco street homes beautuui pic

every thing that money can buy. Of
course , all this makes the change from
the outaido atmosphere of squalor the
more marked. Judge Thornton's homo

or Americans , who have settled hero
because of this incomparable climate.
