I THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; TUESDAf. JTfiNjS. S. 188& A Fomalo' Murd&ror Suicides In the Stnto Ponltontlory. SHE WAS A VICIOUS PRISONER. Successful Meeting of the Irish IjonRHe Proposed Now Towns on the 11. & M. Suite House Oc currences City Uriel * . LINCOLN Buniuu OP THK OMAIU DEB. 1 1020 p STREET , \ LINCOLN , Junol ) A suicide of nn timifunl and scntlmcnlnl character occurred nt the stnto penitentiary yesterday morning whereby tlio occupant of cell No , 243 , gallery No. B , ended n llfo full ot tragic nnd revolting incidents. The oc cupant of cell No , C was a woman. Perhaps it wore best now to say that oho Is a woman , as it could hnrdly hnvo been said before this lost dcsporato net as It can now bo said In the language of the Bridge of Sighs , "All that la left of her now is ) mro womanly. " Mrs. Sarah J. Overton was sent to the pon- Itcnti.ary last September for n peculiarly , 'lorrlblo crime which Is fresh In the minds ut the renders of Tun URB. She was living in Butler county with her husband nnd sev eral children. One morning the news was taken to the neighbors that the husband had been found with his head nearly blown oft by a load ot buck shot from a shot gun. There were no witnesses against the woman but her own little child ren , who testified clearly and consistently , in spllo of the most rigid cross examination , that their mother , while tier husband was not watching und was perhaps asleep , had takch the gun and deliberately murdered him. She was convicted on this testimony and was sentenced to the penitentiary for n ' term ot twenty-five years. The woman proved a vicious and unruly prisoner from the first. She was continually quarreling with the other female convicts nnd the authorities have not been able to compel her to do n day's work slnco she en * tcrcd the prison. She got Into n rage on Saturday morning nnd was tearing her bedding to shreds when she was taken from the room where aho was with other fe male convicts nnd placed in a coll. In this cell yesterday morning about half past 0 o'clock she was found with her throat cut from car to car. An examination showed that the fatal work had been done with a cuso Knife which she had managed to secure nnd conceal , mid which she had sharpened for the purpose. Coroner Shoemaker was called and summoned n Jury and an inquest was held. Beside the facts which are given nbovo it was brought out that the woman Imd frequently said that she would never serve out her sentence and that when u con vict was buried last Friday she remarked that there had never been a woman buried in the grounds nnd that she would probably bo the first ono. These facts , it seems , were uot known to the prison otllcmls. The coroner's Jury rendered the following verdict : "That the said Sarah .1. Ovorton came to her death on the third day of June , 188S , at 0:30 : a. m. , by cutting her own throat with n sharp table knife , sharpened by her in lier cell for that purpose , with her own hand , With intent to commit suicide. At the fatal Q street crossing yesterday morning , the dead body of Johnnie Mack offered a mute protest to the present overbear ing policy of the Union Pacific.
