early and made strong bids on the start , not
leaving the pens if they could buy the cattle.
Hence , the salesmen generally quoted suit

New York was reported very firm and Chi-
capo had nil the good cattle in sight as the
receipts in St. Louis and Kansas City were
largely Tcxans. Common natjvcs and can

the latter selling substantially lower than on
Friday last. There was literally nothing

TUB BRE. ] STOCKS Although the stock
market was extremely dull , with the trading
routined to less than six stocks , there was n
noticeable change for the hotter in the orders.
First prices were generally from % toi \
per cent above Saturday's final quotations
nnd further advances were recorded during
the early dealings and Union 1'nciflc and
Missouri Pacific advanced Jf per cent , nnd
Heading nnd Northern Pacific preferred nnd
Northwestern % per cent each. The gains in
the remainder of the list were only fractional.
Toward midday there was n small increase in
the trading but the advance was checked.
Tlio shorts were the chief buyers , but there
was alee some bull manipulation In Union
Pacific. Advices from Washington were not
very favorable for the immediate passage of
the relief bill nnd after an advance stock
came out more freely and most of the early
appreciation disappeared. The St. Paul
statement for May showed a dccrcaso of
81COS59 but It had llttlo effect on the market ,
the entire fluctuation being confined to } 4
point. Coalers continued strong until the
close and recorded gains of } { to % . Pull
man Jumped Into prominence as a strong
stock and advanced 2 points on the buying of
n few hundred shares. The rest of the list
did nothing of Importance. President In-
man , of the Richmond Terminal , has outlined
the following plan for tbo alliance of the
southern roads : First , the board of control ,
consisting of the president , or In his absence ,
of the vice president , of each road party to
the agreement ; second , the board or commit
tee of arbitration to consist of three arbitra
tors , to bo elected by the board of control.
This board will have Jurisdiction over all
matters pertaining to rates , and also to all
vacations pertaining to the building of now
lines and extensions by any road liable to in
terfere with thu buslncsss of any road rep
resented in the board. Tlio statement of the
Northern Pacific for May is fully us peed as
the the friends of that property have claimed
and showed an Increase of $477,890 , nnd from
July 1 to May 31 , a gain of $2,583,013. There
was good buying and last sales were at out
side figures , showing an advance on pre
ferred over Saturday's close of lc. The
other active stocks closed firm at the top ,
recording net gains of % to IjSfc. Burlington
and Hock Island were up 1 point each , Oregon
Transcontinental 1 % , Pullman 1J4 , Heading
Jf , St. Paul > , Union Pacific % . The total
sales wore 100,025 shares , including 25,000 of
Reading , 18,000 Union Pacific , 13OJOSt. Paul ,
and 7,000 Missouri Pacific.

A Briitnl King : ,
Louis XV. hutl a spaniel whoso slnglo-
licitrtod devotion lie ill requited , says a.
writer in the All the Year Around.
Sliovu3 a goutlo creatiifo ho had him
self reireU : , and trained to starve rather
than to take food from any hand but hol
iday's. But when "Louis that was , lay
forsaken , a mass of abhorred clay , "
when the feet of his late servile cour
tiers wore hastening through the gal-
lories of Versailles to pay homiXRO to
the now king , there was no leal cnnino
subject left to mourn over her dead
master. The dofc , whoso absolute at
tachment the king had won , ho deliber
ately shot in ft lit of cold-blooded bril-
Lnlity. Barbicr , in his journal , relates
how "the king had his dog taken to his
hunting lodge ; ho fired at her and
wounded her. She ran nnd fawned upon
him. Ho sent her from him a second
time , fired at her again and killed her. "
It Is n CurloiiH Fnct
That the body is nowmorosuscoritiblo to
benefit from medicine than nt any sea
son. Hcnco the importance of taking
Hood's Snrsaparilla now , when it will
do you the most good. It is really won
derful for purifying nnd enriching the
blood , Creating nn appetite , and giving
n healthy tone to the whole system. Bo

How to Win nt Lottery.
Travelers who have found it hard to
win at trento ot qunrnnto will probably
try to recoup themselves by backing
their fancy in the Italian lottery , saya
the Longman's Magazine of Rome ,
Italy. An infallible plan for winning
has boon communicated to mo by a
learned Florentine , but 1 forgot some of
the details. After incantations , which
you can got up for yourself in Potrus do
Abnno , you have a little dinner for two
laid on Christmas Eve or thi ) cvo of St.
John. One of the plates must bo black
ened with ainoko on the bottom. You
sit down nnd utter Avos and Pater Nesters -
tors till the door Hies open and in rushes
Saint Pasqimlo somebody , (1 ( forgot his
highly respectable family name. ) Ho
is dressed all in red and fetches you two
swinging boxes on the car. for lie is
angry at beine summoned from para
dise. As ho is doing this you hand him
the pinto with the smoked bottom , on
which lie writes a , torno of numbers
with his linger. You plank your bottom
tom dollar on the tcrno and ( if the gov
ernment pays up ) you arc a made man.
This is only a rough sketch of how to
win. I have discovered no other way.
The lottery is a beneficent institution.
Nobody wins , poVhaps. but everybody
expects to win and lives in nappy
dreams of purchasing steam yachts and
of existing in idleness and opulence
Thus the lottery is a Paradis Artificial ;
wo have only the turf in England , and
to expect to succeed in spotting winners
demands more faith than the general
public has at its disposal.
All the world and his wife more par
ticularly his wife , for she makes the
puddings , pies and custards that delight
His Majesty's palate use VAN
DUZER'S FLAVORING EXTRACTS ,
obtained from sound , ripe fruit , incom
parable in llavor , absolutely free from
chemicals , highly concentrated und
therefore economic , prepared by a pro
cess which does not admit of their con
tact with nny substance which might
contaminate them , and a time-honored
standard article that wins approbation
in every household.
Travel In 182O.
A few miscellaneous items of intelli
gence recorded for the benefit of
travelers in 18:20 may not bo without
their interest for the fortunate travel
ers in 1S88 , says the Cornhill , Eng. ,
leazino. At that time the passenger
by diligence from Paris to Brussels had
to sleep two nights on the road. The
fare for the journey , viz. : 70f , does not
seem oxhorbitant , especially when we
bear in mind that it included bed and
board en route. It is true that for this
payment you had no right to a separate
chamber ; there might oven bo several
beds in it , but an extra fee would gen
erally secure privacy. And the waiter
only expected 0 sous as a pourboire.
Where arc such waiters nowadays'/
From London to Geneva , including din
ners , suppers and beds on the road , the
faro was not far short of 20 , while the
faro to Florence was about 35. Fares
by sea wcro perhaps not higher than
now in proportion to the time taken on
the voyiigo. Thus from Falmouth to
Gibralter the faro was 38 , to Malta
69 , to Messina C1. But passengers
had to provide their own bedding , and
there was no reduction in the fares for
female servants. The packets sailed
"every three weeks , weather permit
ting.1' ' From Hamburg to Harwich
every "whole passenger" paid 5 , every
'half passenger" 3. Hero again fe
male servants were counted as "whole
passengers" as also were all children
over six years of ago.
"Tho best on earth" can truly bo
said of Grigg's Glycerine salve , a speedy
cure for cuts , bruises , scalds , burns ,
sores , piles , tetter and all skin erup
tions. Try this wonder healer. 25

The presence in the city of Leo Man-
ano , a Japanese , says the Knnfcas City
Times , whoso nose furnishes him the
means of earning a livelihood Mr.
Pnrnnno being aEmellor of tea recalls
the fact that in Japan the nose is the
only feature which attracts attention.
The nebo determines the beauty or
ugliness of a face according as it is big
or little. This is 'probably duo to the
fact that ditToronco in noses constitutes
about , the only distinction between ono
Japancbo face and another. Tlio eyes
nre invariably black , the cheek bones
high nnd the chin receding. In Japan
a lady who has a huge proboscis is al
ways a raging beauty and a reigning
bulle. There are few largo noses among
the natives and lucky indeed is ho or
she upon whom nature lavishes one. In
all Japanese pictures representing sup
posedly beautiful women the artist
turns himself loose on the nose.
Life is burdensome , alike to the suf
ferer nnd all around him , while dyspep
sia and its attending evils hold sway.
Complaints of thin nature can bo speed
ily cured by taking Prickly Ash Bittcra
regularly. Thousands once thus
afilictcd bear cheerful testimony as to
its merits.
