THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY. MAY 30. 1885 IDE SPECULATIVE MARKETS A Lively Session Closing With the Bears on Top. CORN RULES BARELY STEADY. Onts Hold Tliclr Own the IJcst of All tlio Ccrcnls I'rovlBlons A nlti Quiet llcfivy Hr.celiits CHICAGO PUOmJCB MAUKET. D CIIICAOO , Mny 29. fSpocInt TclCRrnm to TUB 13Kn.1 Fluctuations | wcro swift , wlilo nnil puzzling In the wheat innrkct to-tiny. First ono sldo had tlio nilvnntiiio tlicn Uio other. If It bo true that "Ho who laughs last laughs best , " then the bears were Rood laURh- crs , for fortune was decidedly with them lit the close , although earlier In the session It was ns decided ngalnst them. There wns n fairly even balance between the bull and bear news received , but local Inllucnces were the most powerful. There was some long wheat to bo sold out early this mornliif ? bo- tauso of the break nnd weakness of yester day nftcrnoon , and this caused n lower open ing nnd an Immediate decline of about K from yesterday's closing. Then very nctlvo buying began for Cudnhy"antl for Jones , Kcnnctt < fe Hopkins nnd there was n quick advance of IJ c In the July delivery to which the above mentioned buyers devoted their entire attention. The more deferred deliv eries showed much less improvement. It was noticeable that while July was advancing rapidly and December slowly in this market , July was declining and December advancing very slightly In New York. This was a con dition of things which could not lust and July began to decline slowly. At 13 o'clock that delivery stood at EOjfc. Might minutes later it had Just fallen Ic to SSjfc , nnd in two minutes moro had reacted } 4c to 1 5c. Men were Inquiring what news had brought about Bueb n result. In fact there appeared to bo no news to account for it. .Buyers who had been sustaining the market thus far had withdrawn , and Hutchlnson , Ream & Bald win began selling heavily nnd stampeded the crowd. There was. free .unloading of long wheat. Cudahy and Jones began buy ing again at the decline established by the llrst break , nnd they stopped It only temporarily.Vlth frequent small reactions the price of July wheat gradually dropped to 84 J c and closed ntSMJfo at 1 o'clock. It had opened , according to oflicinl figures , at 60J fe , but at the same time there were sales at 5Jfe. The highest point touched was 8ft < e. January wheat opened at 8 Jc , sold up to 85J e , down to and closing at KlXc. Corn ruled llrm and a little higher through the morning session until Just a few minutes before the close when a sharp break occurred. Trading was light 111 the early part of the session with the bears evidently made tim orous by the masterly way in which the largo rcceliits had been tancn care of by bull houses without in any dogrco weakening the market. This indisposition to sell short seemed to bo responsible for the early strength and small advance , rather than any great demand for the grain. The success of the wheat bears , however , seemed to en courage their colleagues in the corn pit , and there was free selling during the last ten minutes of the morning session. July corn , which had opened at WJjc' , and sold up to BSlfc , dropped toni c , and closed at Juno corn opened ut 5-l 'e , sold up to down to 64 > Vc , anil closed ; it 51 c. Of all cereals oats held their best In the speculative markets. Tlio May delivery was especially strong under the continued cover ing of shorts , who atone time bid the urico up to 37c. a full cent higher than yester day's olosuitf prii-e. It closed tiUT , June oats opened and closed at yesterday's closing price 3l5f'o-selllng ! up ut ono time to ! i3c. July oats opened ut Mhti , sold at 'Me and 3.H' ' c , and closed at : MC. Trade was not so largo as on recent days. In the provision trndo a quiet feeling again hold control. For both cash nnd future de livery the movement was too limited to excite any interest , and the market was almost featureless. The product , however , was comparatively steady , and at 1 o'clock lard and short ribs were quoted some U' < jC higher than last night's closings. Pork closed unchanged to ! 2 } o lower. CHICAGO JjIVK STOCK. CHICAGO , May 29. [ Special Telegram to Tnn UEI : . | UATTLB The feature of the market to-day was the big receipts of Tex- tins , some 2CO cars , or say fully 4,000 head , the largest number on any ono day this sea son so far. Taking thla number out of the run left only a moderate supply of natives ugiiin out of which were only a fair number rf steers that would suit the shipping nnd ilresscd beef trade , so that natives , especially light , nlco , handy steers sold n shade firmer , ulthough medium natives sold up to last Week's prices , but anything that hud to com- joto ) with Texans followed the down turn of 10@ll > o on the latter. "You may report a straight cut of lOQl'jc ' , " said a sales man who had ono-thlrd of tlio receipts. [ Special Telegram to THE HEB.J STOCKS There was a better feeling In stocks In London ami on the cent I ncnt nnd fair sized buying orders received from that market. This set the pace in Wall Etrcet nnd us to-morrow is n holiday nnd the market Is being heavily oversold there was n tharp demand for shorts and the call for stocks in the lower crowd wns better than on any day for a WCCK- . The opening was stronger with an ndvuuco of J4@ % iwluts. Trading up to noon was fair but fallowed a falling oft compared with yesterday Unit ug predated 113,015 share * , about three-quarters pf which Wcro of St. . 1'uul , Heading und Missouri Pacific. London bought 3OQO shares of Union Pncifio and fair amounts of Reading nnd St. Paul. Wnshington parties ngnln Imd the tip to buy Union Pacific nnd it advanced 1 point. The fcnturo during the morning wns the heavy selling of Missouri Pacific for long account nnd it dropped % but later rallied nnd recovered ell the de cline. The St. Paul pool that has recently liquidated held 70,000 ahnrcs. When they discovered the company's ' earnings were de creasing nnd that the showing for April would be bad they began laying plans to get out , nnd employed Commncks' brokers to sell their stock , ns they were the only ones wtio were nblo to sell largo blocks of stocks with out breaking the mnrkct to pieces. It is the talk on the street that the decline In Rock Island to 105) yesterday was on the belief that tlio next dividend would bo reduced. There are only 40,000 shares floating nround nnd that tends to check heavy short selling.
