[ Special Telegram to TUB linn. ] There wns n suspicion toward the close to-day that nn effort was being made by certain largo sellers of "puts" Frl- flay night to raid the market to n point where Wheat would bo "put" to them. The price was 8Gc for this ' 'privilege ' , " nnd there wus n successful effort inndo during the last thirty minutes to close July under that. The market started weak at 8 * ; < c for July. The Weather was fine , British cables came weak , jnd the influences from nil over the Moor from the corn , oat nnd provision crowds tvcro bearish , The chief explanation of the course of tbo market Is , however , dullness. Trading was confined to the pit. Scalpers 3ld most of the buying nnd most of the Bell ing. It took very little effort consequently Dn the part of Hutchinson nnd Ream to send prices down. At 87c there wcro for awhile enough buying orders to stop the decline. There happened right after to bo some buyIng - Ing by Mitchell and by others which , with idlers momentarily cximu&tod , adrnnccd July to 67 c. But the price did not hold. Between noon and the close there wns sell ing by Ilutchlnson and by Poole , which had for its object the closing of July under SO-tfc. Privilege traders made a llttlo light but the plan wus HUccessful. July stopped at fcOX@S < ! 9c. It IB expected that the vlslblo supiily Monday will decrease over n million. Lake llgures are still nn uncertain factor , but It is anticipated thnt a very largo shnro of last wcok's "on lake" and "on canal" grain will by Monday bo out of the way. Ucam is predicting n very sharp decline indeed fore telling some very dlro thing. There wus apparently no support given the corn market , closing prices being at the very bottom for July nnd May. May started at r > 5c , nnd touched 5ic ( once , but closed at Ktc , July opened ut Me , toucocd 5.1 &fc , but closed nt &lc. Irwin , Green & Co. sold 2.10,000 bushels of July , supposed to bo Shaw's holding. Scalpers made u set nt the market , but were timorous. Hoyden picked up some Mny , Belling July. Schwartz , Dupco Jfc Co. and Hobert Warren & Co. were nlso Belling July. Foss , Strong & Co. and Cl. C. Walker & Co. bought a little , but the latter were on both sides. It is the talk that thcro is 5,000,000 bushels shortage in May still out , Tliu gimp was nlso out of oats , Mny Belling from ! )7 ) = fc to 35 > fc , July from 33c to 83c. Mnthcws sold.a good sized line of August. Jones , ICennct't & Hopkins took one lot of liT ! ,000 bushels from Schwarz for Au- Ijust. Norton & Wortliington continued their purchases of Juno. The weakness was caught from the corn crowd. In provisions thu week closed with n re- cccdlng turn to prices. With the continued dullness developed to-day In u weak market nnd with holders disposed to shorten their lines , n severe , ns well as general , dccjino oc curred. Business from first to lust this week has been active with a remarkably steady range of prices under the heavy run "for the season. St. Paul was sold persistently all week and bulls who huvo sought to control the mar ket , but signally fulled , allowed the stock to Tall to (17 ( % , which is the lowest price In four yrars. These transactions nnd the resultlnu' decline In price have givc'n the whole market n partial stroke of paralysis which for n Whllo only checked dealings In other stocks bnt later , owing to their persistence , cre ated considerable general realizing , which found few buyers and depressed values throughout the list. Molstcr , hog buyer for E. A. Black- shere , Baltimore , arrived at the yards to day for the purpose of buying hogs. They handle hogs of 100 Ibs. average and hogs o : 200 Ibs. and up. From March 1 to data Omaha has gained 40,000 in the number of hogs packed , as com pared with the sumo time lust year. During the same time Kansas City has lost 51,75- nnd Chicago 5,000. Ono year ago Kansas City was 199,753 ahead of Omaha in the num ber of hogs packed. This season Kansas City is ony 00,000 ahead of Omaha. The week's packing In the west has fallen somewhat below corresponding time last yrar , showing a total of Ib5,000 hogs , against 205,000 a year ago. From March 1 the aggre gate Is now the Bamo as a year ago , 1,770.00 ( hogs. Most of the hogs now being handled nro fairly good in quality , probably well ui to the usual point for the time of your. It is now evident thut the western packing during the month of May will full consiilerablj short of snmo time last year , although a part of this deficiency has been balanced by an enlarged eastern movement , which the cool weather ban favored , maintaining the demand for fresh product. The June packing las ) year was liberal , although considerably shorl of the preceding year , and there are no rea sons apparent wny last year's figures may bo expected to bo exceeded the coming month some decrease Is more likely. The number of subordinate castles has been increased during the year from 278 , with a membership of 25,000 , to 400 castles , with a membership of oO.OOO. The supreme chief makes , among others , the following recommendations : That charters bo granted to the grand castles of Ohio and Missouri in lieu of the dispensations under which they are now working , and that action bo taken to prepare and adopt a degree for the widows , wifes and dajghtcrs of the members of the order. The ICnights had a grand street parade which , passing through the white house grounds , was reviewed by President Cleveland. * Knights Templar. The thirty-llfth annual conclave of Knights Templar of Pennsylvania began its session in Pittsburg Tuesday morning , and was in session during the week. There was a grand parade the opening day , in which about 2,500 Sir Knights from all parts of the state par ticipated. The weather was beautiful , and all along the route the various commanderics were greeted with applause for their soldierly bearing and excellent marching. In the afternoon the session of the grand ledge was held In the opera house , and in the evening there was a reception at the same place. The city was in holiday garb and the streets were thronged with strangers who had come to the city to attend the opening day meeting. A State Assembly. The grand ledge of Knights of Pythias of Ohio assembled at Zancsvlllo Tuesday for its nineteenth annual session. The ledge was attended by over 300 delegates , and was vis ited by Howard Douglas , supreme chnncclloi of the world , and S. J. Willey , supreme mas ter of the exchequer. The most Important business transaction was the unanimous adoption of a resolution strongly endorsing the course of the supreme chancellor in the Pennsylvania matter ; the election of Past Grand Chancellor A. P. Buttorfleld , of Gin- cinnatl , ns supreme representative , and the conferring of the grand ledge degree on over 100 members. This organization in this city composed of knights nnd ladles Is making rapid progress. Their membership ranks are constantly in creasing. Its members can carry nt option insurances in the sums of $500 to (5,000. Being - ing composed of men nmt women it has ad vantages over similar organizations in a so cial point , while the assessments on the vari ous amounts are very moderate. A few weeks ago the ladies of this society gave a very interesting and praiseworthy see iublo , the effects of which are felt by the impres sion it produced on the visitors and in making many friends for the order. It is expected that another good time will bo experienced at their hands in the near future. It is the plan of the organization to arrange for the holding of regular sociables and thus bring about u general personal acquaintance among the members of the order. * A Spirit of 1'rogrosHlon. Such a spirit is evident from the progress of the Modern Woodmen of America In Omaha. Around tliolr camp can bo found some of the best men of the city and during the past month many names have been added to their list. An increase of annual duns ii contemplated and by July 1 they expect to bo "at homo" in their now iiuartors , the A , O. U , W. hall in the Barker block. Ciraiul IttHlgo Mooting , Considerable interest is being manifested ainoiiL' the members of the order of Knights of honor , especially In Cleveland , Ohio , in reference to the result of the coming session of the Grand Lodge , which will be held in Delaware , beginning Juno 13. For the past thrcoor four years there has been a falling off in the membership tnroughout Ohio , and in order to regain its forrnor numbers it is important that thu order should ( .elect the rife-lit man to Jill the position , of grand dicta tor. For this otlieo : i number of gentlemen havobeun mentioned , prominent among thum being Judge T , H. Johnson , Cleveland ; C. Ih Gunson , Urbumi ; John A. Work Fur the Supreme liodgo Meeting The Spur talks scnso when It addresses Iho knights of this city as follows : "If the Omaha knights dcslro to secure and entertain the Supreme Lodco in 1SOO , nn effort to that end should bo made at onco. A mass meeting of all Omaha knights should Immediately bo called nnd some action taken , Nothing could , of course , bo done nt this meeting other than to exchange views of sen timents favorable to or against the proposi tion. If the knights of this city should de cide that they wished to entertain that body , they should pledge themselves to raise the amount of money necessary to do it hand somely , then ndvlso Nebraska's representa tives to the Supreme Ledge to try to secure the next session for Omaha. We favor the proposition nnd sincerely hope something will bo done towards it in this month. " Colored Odd The members of the colored Odd Fellows of the city gave n very pleasant entertain ment nt Exposition hall last Thursday night in the line of u literary and musical enter tainment for the purpose of raising a build ing fund for the order. The progress of the Equitable Aid union throughout the country during the last year is very llattcriug , nearly 0,000 members hav ing been added to its ranks. The perfect Justice nnd equality of the plan of insurance never fails to moot the hearty approval of In telligent men. Since the formation of the Grand union of Ohio last March unusual enthusiasm is manifested all over the state. The Ohio membership will probably increase 1OUO or moro during this year. * KnlghtH WIUNot 1'aradc. The public generally will bo grieved to hear that the members of the uniform rank , Knights of Pythias , will not join in the Decoration Day parade. The members of the Second regiment were ordered out to take part in the exorcises , but after some delay and trojjblo the order was counter manded. The reason for so doing was that it was not a Pythian day and the members desire to sco tho'conipctition priro drill that afternoon on the ball park between Omaha and Black Eagle divisions. A United Woodman Tjodgo. A new lodge A. O. U.V. . was installed at South Omaha during the past week by Grand Lecturer A. P. Johnson , which starts out under the most favorable auspices and with a largo number of members. The initiation fee Is $10 and the annual dues the same. This entitles the member's family to 2,000 insurance nt the time of his death. The of ficers installed wore Jacob J. Kulak , P. M. : Dr. J. A. A. Kelly , M. W. ; C. W. Miller , formnn ; J. L. Kemp , inside watchman , nnd Put Sullivan , outside watchman. The trustees appointed were Jacob James ICulok , W. H. Mann nnd W. H. Sluybaugh , and the medical examiners Drs. Slaybaugh and Kelly. The ledge will meet every Tuesday night. A New Temple. There are some stories circulating among the members of the Masonic temple craft of the city that the members of that order are planning for the purchase of a building silo nnd the erection of a new seven story tcmplo in this city. The property that is considered the best located for such a building is on the north west corner of Furnam and Sixteenth streets , the old city hall property. The lots in ques tion comprise the corner , sixty-six feet front ing on Farnani , belonging to Mr. Kiloy , of Philadelphia ; twenty-two feet adjoining on the west , belonging to D. C. Patterhon , and forty-four feet next west , and adjoining the New York Lifo building , the property of John F. Coad. The site has a like frontage on Sixteenth street , nnd covers one-fourth of a block. Thu building to be erected will contain the halls and ledge rooms of the order in this city , and the oillccrs of the grand ledge of thestate. . The original hall on Sixteenth street nnd Capitol avenue was enlarged about two years ago , but the growth of the order has been bo rapid that it will be compelled before long to seek even larger and more commodious quarters. At present thirteen lodges , chapters and commanderics hold their meetings in Masonic hall. The order is amply able to carry out this work and if it is once actively taken up will no doubt bo pushed to an early completion. Resolutions of Kospcot. Omaha , May 23 , 18SS.
