" Ho got oft" well and the landing1 wus very favorable. This was his tenth jump and was different from any of the others. "I looked at my barometer just bcforo I jumped , " he says , ' 'and indi cated about 9,000 feet. I could hardly realize that I had attained so great an altitude , but when I returned to the ground and found out how long it took mo to make the ascen sion and the jump I was sure about the distance. I had about SJOO pounds of ascension force on. I prob ably went skyward at the rate of about 3,000 feet per minuto. The collapse of the balloon when I pulled the cord , iust as I jumped , was moro complete than ever before. The jerk of the parachute brought the balloon over on one side. The tear , or opening , was about ten feet long. Then the rush of the gas to the nock or opening was so great that it caused a total collapse , and the balloon shot down by mo and reached the ground probably flvo minutes before I did. The parachute wont the first 200 to 300 foot at a terrible rate of speed. Then it acted queerly , acted as il never did be fore. It seemed to inflate all right , and in an instant shut up again. I hardly know what my sensations wore. It took but an instant , I should think , and then it filled all right. The wind scorned to rushed to the top at first. I experienced a sensation something like seasickness. I was not very dinzy. " _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ A handsome complexion is ono of the greatest charms a woman can possess. A recent issue of the Pittsburg ( Pa. ) Commercial Gazette saya : An ice sled which is to bo propelled by a traction wheel is the invention of a well known Pittsburg lawyer. It was the outgrowth of a dream. Ho imagined that ho was skating , but iiibteadof applying the mo tive power to his feet was propelling himself by a rotary motion of his hands and arms. Ho at once sot about apply ing the idea thus pained , and with an arrangement of treaties and crunks at tained the result. .Ho claims that a speed of twenty-seven feet nor second can bo attained by his model , and by varying the size of the various wheels it could bo greatly increased. His ar rangement for guiding his sled and for chocking or stopping it when in motion is also apparently perfect.
