J31.660 A Hoodoo Snnko Ring. Professional singers arc , tis a rule , almost ! is superstitious as gamblers , and { Jtimblei-3 have moro hoodoos and mas cots tlian the old Grecian sailors had says the Chicago Times. Among the things which are generally accepted among grand opera people as hoocioos. s ii-o to bring bad luck , is the snake ring , which a few years ago was worn upon the lingers of so many fashionable persons. One of the attaches of the French opera company , now performing at the Columbia theater , though not a singer himself , partakes of the superstitions of those with whom he comes in daily con tact. Some years ago , before ho be came convinced that a snake ring is a hoodoo , ho pin-chased a handsome one in Paris for 935. That night his hotel caught fire and he jumped from a third- story window , injuring himself so se verely that ho was conlincd to his room for several days. This pretty nearly convinced him that the snake ring was an unlucky ornament so nearly in fact that lie ceased to wear it , but carried it as a pocket piece. Last Saturday ho was walking on Dearborn street , in this cit.y , looking up at the buildings and musing along with his hands in his pockets. With out any thought of what ho was doing ho run his linger through the snake ring in his pocket , and lo ! somebody had left a pile of coal beside an open coal hole. Before lie knew it , our French friend stuck his foot into the coal and dived headlong over the pile down through tlio hole into the base ment , bruising and barking himself in a most lamentable way. Of course , whnn he found himself falling ho throw up his hand , nnd there was the snake ring gloaming nnd glittering' , almost hissing1 and gibbering' , on his linger. Frank Porloy , the associate manager of the Columbia , who is not yet con vinced of the hoodooing properties of the ringis negotiating for tlio purchase of it. Ho says the Frenchman lias off ered it to him for $10 , and lie is sure that by the tinio sonic other accident happens to the owner ho will sell it for $2 , and then Frank will buy it. A Negro Turning White. Macon ( Ga. ) Telegraph : Tom Lump- kin , who was for a long time the porter nt tlio city hall , hut who moved to Mil- ledgovillo , was in town yesterday with liis six-year-old daughter , who is much of a curiosity. SumoMiing over a year ago the child , winch was of a ginger- cake color , began to turn white , the skin whitening in spots. It continued in this transformation until the entire body , face and limbs wore as white as the bltin of the average white child , with tlio exception of a band ofabout the width of an inch and a half around the neck , which retained its original cojor. A few weeks ago the child went to Florida and while there , Tom says , she was sunburnt , and the original gingorcalfiness returned in blotches on the cJicoks. This , ho says , will go away in a week or so.leaving the chocks white and rosy. Thin is the second in- stancn of the kind known in Mncon. It will bo remembered that a negro , now in the penitentiary , who maUo n mur- durnus assault on Air. P O'llara , 'was almost white , his skin having changed from a gingcreako to a pink and white. C.
