GARDEN WORK FOR THE GIRLS How to MnnnffO Swarming Bcea The New Food for Sheep Hints on Chicken Raising Gcn oral Farm Notes. Exterior of Homes. As almost invariably wo can form a correct opinion of character by the out ward appearance of individuals , says the Ilealdsburg , ( Ky. ) Enterprise , by their expression , volco and dross , so wo judge of the Inmates of a house by the exterior appearance of their dwelling nnd ita surroundings. Wealth may add all the adornments that money oan fur nish , and yet to a close observer it maybe bo lacking in the essentials of a true and happy homo. There is beauty in an iceberg , glistening nnd resplendent , reflecting in many colors the rays of sunshine , yet cold nnd barren , too rigid for the Arctic birds which pass t by in silence , and yet the cottage of the poor may radiate n feeling of warmth nnd hospitality though its en vironments bo simple in the extreme. The garden blooming with roses and twining honeysuckles , speaksmore' of "Homo , Sweet Homo , " than an iron gate guarded by marble statuary , which speaks plainer than human voice of the cold reception which , the unbend ing laws of society dictate to the ono who may dare to venture through the guarded gateway. Of course there are many exceptions to this rule , yet how few in comparison to the hotno adorned by nature and arranged by the skillful touch of loving hands , toiling all that may cross the threshold of homo's secret hearthstone beyond the latticed window. How inviting might bo made the dooryards and immediate surroundings of every homo in our midst , where nature has lavished so much in our behalf , if wo but exerted an hour of each day in the planting and training of flowers and ornamental trees. Nothing can bo more inviting or attractive to visitors than the neat appearance of town nnd country homes. In addition to the attractions conso- quontupon homo improvementsa finan cial value is added to the property. Judgments of the thrift and productive capabilities of a farm nro often based upon the showing around the homo. In the business cares of life wo are apt to forgot the little things that make lifo happy and contented , the only spot dear to every heart , the homo. In beautifying that wo can never exert ourselves too much , and the hours spent in homo adornment will but add so much to our lifo of wealth , health and contentment. The Swarming Bees. Mr. J. E. Pond in a communication to the Boo Journal , writes : "Whether bees over select a homo before swarm ing is ono that probably no ono can an swer , as their vagaries are such thai the facetious remark of the late Mrs , Tuttle , viz : 'Bees do nothing invar iably'may bo taken as an axiom. In my own experience I do not find thai bees do select a now homo before swarm' ing. If they did there would bo no pro' tection whatever , in my judgment against leaving the now hive after being placed therein. My own belief based on my own experience , is that at soon as the swarm settles pioneers star ! out to find a now homo ; if they succeed in so doinj ? they return and take the swarm with them. For this reason ] bolivo that all swarms should bo hivci as soon ao thov have settled , and whor this is done Iliavo no moro trouble witl them leaving the now hive. It is tru ( that no ono can determine accurately when a newly hived swarm leaves the hive , whether they selected the nov homo before or after they swarmed ; bu' I think that if the rule is followed o hiving all swarms as soon ns they fairlj settle , but little trouble will follow. Mj advice to beginners who depend upot natural swarming , is to watch thoapiarj closely during the swarming season Keep constantly prepared for issuing swarms and hive them as soon as thoj are fairly settled. By so doing I believe liovo they will find less trouble than nni other way. " "Work In the Garden Girls. . If there isnny ono thing moro beauti ful , says an exchange , than another , it : a garden of flowors.thnt thing is a beau tiful girl , with a sunbonnet on her hcail so wide and capacious that you have t < got right square before her , and prottj near her , to see the glowing cheeks thai are euro to bo there if she is at all ac customed to garden walks and works Physically there can bo nothing bottoi for daughtprs , and , indeed , for nmnj wives , than to take solo charcro of t small flower garden. The benefits de rived from early rising , stirring the soil , snuffing the pure morning air , arc freshness and glow of cheek and bright ness of oyooheorfulnoss of tempervigor of mind and purity of heart. Consequently quently , she must bo moro cheerful anil lovely as a daughtorraoro dignified and womanly as a slstorand moro attractive nnd confiding as n wifo. If you have not the dooryard ground , then got n dozen pots and plant the , seed of flowers to your taste. The care and attention required to rear and train the growing plants occupies the mind , to the oxclu' slon , oftentimes , of senseless novel-read' ing , a senseless waste of tlmo. You list less , pale-faced , fragile thing of a girl throw oft your raoclc delicacy , put on gloves , if you will , but work in the gar- en till your cheeks will via in coloi with the blush ot the rose you cultivate , The Sotal Plant. A now food for stock in considerable favor in the south west is the sotal plant , It is found to bo especially good foi feeding sheep. The plant belongs to the aloe , and is found growing in vary large quantities over the plains of western Texas. It also grows very extensively in northern Mexico. In appearance this plant resembles that Known as bear grass , the leaves being from eighteen inches to two foot in length , nnd the edges have a hooked thorn , These leaves put out from or crown n bulb , llko a pineapple or kohl rabi , which is on or above the ground , and is from a foot to two and one-half feet in diameter. This bulb is the part thai the stock cat , and is very nutritious , containing a largo percentage oi saccharine matter. The Mexicans make an alcoholic liquor from it , known as mescal do sotal , and which it ono of the most fiery of the many fiery beverages of that country. To 'food it to sheep , n man starts out ahead o ! the flock and with an ax splits open these bulbs and the sheep follow and oat out the center , -In thrco or four months sheep will got hog fat on sotal , which is as good in winter , when there is nc grass as in summer and possibly bettor , Cattle are fed in the same manner. 01 coureo there is a great waste , for whor once cut onpn the plant is Killed , in vrhioj ] respect It differs from the Qftctus plant , which propagates from n loat dropped on the ground. Hut for tjioufe- nnd § of square miloB the aotnl HtofMly covers the growth nnfl will food thous ands of sheep and cattle. Electricity and Agriculture. Experiments have reeohtly-bocn made in Germany to test the Influence of oloc- trlclty In promoting the growth of plants. Plates of copper nnd zlnovoro buried in the ground about ono hun dred feet distant and connected By friro aboro ground , so as to form with the moist earth a voltalo battery , such as has boon used for working oloctrjo clocks. Potatoes and pool were planted between the plates , and the arrange ment is said to liavo given an increased yield of 25 per cent in the ono case , and 16 per cent in the other. Of course , the results were compared with the yield in other parts of the field where the earth battery was not acting. Hatching nml Feeding. A correspondent of the Canadian Poultry Review , in relation to hatching and feeding experience , says if you have been feeding corn and soft food to your breeding pens and oxpcct fertile eggs and strong healthy chicks , don't bo surprised if you are disappointed. The best food for breeding stock is oats , wheat and barley , with sufficient green food and meat. Too much soft food is injurious , and fowls fed on it principally , nro good subjects for disease. Furnish them with sufficient gravel and feed whole grain and they will do their own grinding as nature intends. I have tried both kinds of feeding and know whereof I write notwithstanding others to the contrary. The above applies to chickens as well as adults. When I feed corn mcnl mush and other soft foods , 1 lost a largo percentage before maturity , nnd always was troubled with sickly chicks , which led mo to experi ment , and if possible find the difficulty. For the last few years I scarcely lese a chick except by accident , and the fol lowing is my method of feeding now : First two weeks stale bread soaked in sweet milk , oatmeal porridge and dry granulated oatmeal , continue with the foregoing as lon as you like , the longer the bettor , and in addition give good sound wheat and oats , and as they grow olior add buckwheat. Buckwheat is n good thing to gloss the first coat nnd add lustre to their appearance. Oats may bo fed to very small chicks , for Biddy will do the hulling , nnd should compose about GO per cent of their food , whole , granulated or porridge. l''nrm Notes. To obviate all trouble in the way of chicken diseases , flavor their daily sup ply of drinking water during the warmer part of the season slightly with carbolic acid. acid.Use Use Paris green as soon as the potato beetle shall have appeared , and do not postpone the application , as delay would bo favorable to the beetles. Thoj should bo kept down from the first ap pearance. ' There have been but' few improve ments in hot-beds. They nro nearly the same to-day as they were 100 years ago. An excellent mode of supplying sup porters for growing pea vines is to have two or three strands of cord runninp along the rows. It is cheaper than latli or pea-sticks , and can bo more ensilj removed after the pea harvest is ready. Wheat bran , being light , npparontlj has but little value , yet a ton of it con tains forty-seven pounds of nitrogen nnd over sixty pounds of phosphoric acid , with a largo proportion of potash , A dispatch from Findlay , Ohio , says : "Joseph Tucker , of Marion , owns a Jersey soy cow with a very remarkable appe tite. The animal cats every cat thai comes within its roach. This spring she has eaten five cats , and whenever a fe line comes within her range of vision she is wild until she catches , kills ant oats it. In all other respects the cov appears to bo normal in her tastes nni disposition. She is three years old ant has had this peculiarity over since she was a calf. " The egg product of this country ii estimated to bo 457.000,000 dozens forty-five eggs to each fowl. From the Field nnd Farm wo lean that the largest hen's egg reported foi this year is credited to a light brahms owned by a Mr. Wicks of Los Animus Cal. The egg measures 9x01 inchc and is supposed to have two yolks Next. Old pear trees that have apparontlj been worthless have been revived fy the application of a peck of salt nni ashes scattered around the base. Nevis is the time to try the method. In selecting young peach trees fo : spring transplanting oxnmino then carefully , as the borer is often found ii them. A healthy young tree shoult have very smooth baric , plenty of root : and show no signs of puncture. Dis eases of trees are easily brought on tin farm by not giving proper attention ti the source whence the nursery stock i obtained. Although the ground is still damp owing to heavy spring rains , a drough may occur at any timo. A few daya 6 very warm weather may cause the smal plants to wither. The best remedy ii to keep the earth loose around them which not only prevents loss of moisture but attracts moisture from the air a night. Early melons mny _ bo started now b planting * the seeds in rich earth , in cg ( shells. As soon as the young plant ! shall throw out leaves plant the shelli containing the plants in the proper hilli intended for tnom. The roots of the melons will break the shells after thoj shall have been put in the ground. Every attention should bo given the young Iambs as they are born , and the warmest place on the farm is not toe hot for them now , as they should be forced in growth , EO as to reach the market early so aa to realize the Jiigl prices. Where the tops of young trees have been destroyed cut off the whole of the tops , if dead , and allow sprouts to grow out again from the main stem. A fivo-yoar-old daughter of John Col son , of Americus , Ga. , was fcedinp young chickens , and they had gatheret in her lap as she sat on the ground. A largo hawk darted down and caught one of thorn , carrying it oil , The little girl was very much frightened and ran cry < ing to her mother. A farmer near Flint , Mich. , is mourn' ing the death of two geese that ho hat kept for fifty years. They quit raienf. their goslings about twenty-five year ; ago , and after that ho kept them to take care of the broods of other geese. Clover is ono of the best material : that can bo fed to fowls. If rich milk bo wanted , feed cakes ant meals to the cows along with chaffec hay and straw , says a British exchange If quantity rather then quality bo the object , give thorn plenty of brewers grains , malt , clums and roots. A mix ture of corn , rico and bran , or pot meals , with a moderate quantity o grains nnQ eorao bran and cake , al blended nicely with chaffed straw ant hay , and supplemented by n few roots particularly mangolds , will give a large yield of good milk , if the cow bo of th ( right sort and properly cared for , A worm about two foot long , supposoi at first to bo a linen thread , v/aa fount in. o. bead of cabbage at Mowequa , III , WARNER'S SAFE CURE. . , NOV. 8 "Warner's Sftfo Cufo" : eCt cltfcraoly boncflolal.
