A Day or The last day's races of the May running meeting wcro run at the driving park yester day , and a large number of spectators were in attendance. The day was very pleasant , although the track wnt In rather poor con dition , owing to having been used whllo too wet , nnd it was therefore badly cupped. However , the time made was very good and the races wcro the best of the meeting. A largo force of policemen wcro on the grounds to preserve order , although their services were scarcely needed beyond keeping the traclt clear. The races and their results are given In the order in which they occurred : Titn FIIIST Acn. Uluff City stakes $200 added , for two-year- olds , live eighths of a mile. Subscribers ClmrlcH Gregory , B. Marks , K. L. Squire , John Dunn , IJcerc , Wells & Co. , George R Wright , M. F. Kohrcr , John Muloney , Gilbert Bros , and Thomas llowmnn. Eight horses wcro entered and three started , placed as follows : Council Pint , 115. red , whlto nnd blue Carlisle. Mackenzie , 115 , blue and whlto Hurholder. Mabel II. , ll'i. bluo-Halleck. After considerable scoring , a very fair start was seen red with Mabel II. slightlv In the lead , Mackenzie second and Council Plat In the rear. This order was quickly changed by Mackenzie jumping to the front within the llrst 11)0 ) yard. < As the turn was sounded Plat forged ahead to second place , and Mackenzie's lead was Increased to several lengths. The run down the stretch was uninteresting , several feet of daylight showing between each horse. Council Pint und Mabel H. wcro disquali fied for not trying to win , and llrst money was awarded to Mackenzie , who came under the wire at an easy lope in liODJl. Council Plat was in no condition to run , being slightly lame from an Injury received several days before. Mackenzie sold 10 to 0 against the Held. TIM : snroxo iiAcn. Chancellor , 102. white jacket , red stars , black cap Carlisle. Sunday , 122 , blue jacket , red cap Johnson. Jessie J. was the favorite in the pools , sell ing 2 to 1 against tlio Held. It was the general Impression that.Tessio J. would have a walkaway , and great odds had to be offered to get any money up on her. As the horses came up the fourth time they were sent off , with the favorite about two lengths in the rear. By the time the buck stretch was covered Miller had allowed .Tes- sio J. to fall back six or seven lengths behind Chancellor , who still kept the pace very lively. Miller doubtless thought that the leaders would soon give out and ( hat his turn would come on the homo stretch. At the half milo post ho began to push a little und soon laid alongside of Myrtle , and ran neck and neck with her around the turn. Chancellor had meanwhile drawn away from Sunday and had a daylight lead. As Miller urged his marc down the stretch ho began to rcnlbo that ho had held off too lone , and al though Jessie J. was m prime condition and ran splendidly , her efforts only secured her third place. Sunday taking second by a , neck , and Chancellor holding llrst place by a lend of n length and a half. A largo sum ot money was lost on this race. Pruirio Queen , old gold and bluo. At the start the horses paired off in the order of their places. Only Dare took the lead at the upper end of the stretch , and the only real contest was between Forrest King ana Lottie F. for second place. It , vas a hard light for position , but Forrest King got second by n nose , lapping the winner as ho went under the wire. Only Dare was the favorite In the pools , nnd won considerable money for his backers. Time 1:03 : . ii\cc xo. 4. This was simply an exhibition by the colts and fillies of the Stewart stable , and wus a line run by the two-year-olds Va-Tout , Vcndour , Vcngcur und Lady Gay. Tlio colts broke away finely at the word , but Vengcur Immediately fell back from sonio unknown cause , and it was thought for a time that he would fall , but ho soon recov ered and ran well the remainder of the way , although distanced at the ilnlsh. Tlio lead ers came in Lady Gay first. Va Tout second , Vedeur third. Tiino 54Jf. TIIK Firm IIACC. The flftu and last race was a consolation dash , % mile , for beaten horbcs. There were entries placed as follows : Hello 1C. , 115 , red. Thorp. Forest King , 115 , wine Jacket , blue and whlto cap. Dowy. Derby , 120 , green jacket , red and blue cap. McKlnno.v. . Ueppo , US , brown Jacket , rod and whlto cap. Drane. A splendid start was secured with hut little Jockeying , and the finest race of the day was run m 1 : H3J . Hello 1C. took the lead and held it until tlio upper turn was reached , leading up the back stretch by n length , but as they straightened for the homo run Forest King came up , and soon took the lead , holding it the rest of the way. As the horses neared the wire Hello 1C was urged to her best , and was barely able to keep second place , Derby tak ing third. Hcppo was practically out of the race. Hello K ran splendidly for the first half but was unnblo to hold the pace , owing to insunlclent training. At the close of the horse races n foot race of seventy-live yards was run by three of the members of the freo-for-nll hose team that Is to go to Clinton Lozicr , Koss nnd Hugh. After much delay the men drew up in line to start at the crack of a pistol. When all was ready Lozior gave two or three jumps and the pistol wus fired. With n start of twenty feet Lozior could not fail to win. It was the rankest sellout that was ever sprung on an unsuspecting crowd. Notcfi. The half mile track was the scene of sev eral scrub races during the day , and some of them were very lively ones. The famous pacing mare , Mattie Harlo , record 2.18 , was on the grounds , and was jogging slowly around the track under the saddle. There wcro but few of those who were unacquainted with the little grey , who had any idea of the bpeod possesbod by that nervy flyer. The great trotting stallion , Cyclone , was driven around tlio half mlle track a few times during the afternoon , and showed to perfec tion. tion.Tho The last day's races wcro the best of tlio meeting , and the largo number present ap preciated the fart. There was a fair sprinkling of ladies In the nmphilhoatcr , nnd also u largo number of the fair sex who remained In their carnages along the quaiter stretch , Dalby's military band was in the amplthcn- tcr during the day as on the preceding ones and enlivened the time between the race * with some of their choicest selections , It was claimed that the trouble with the Stewart colt , Vongour , was duo to inexperi ence , it never before having been sent from a standing etait. Considerable interest was manifested In Wndo Gary's three standard bred trotters , Norway , King Humbert and Prince Ivanhoo. Bookman is fast taking a place in the load. His simpjc device needs but to bo seen to convince any ono that it is just what is needed in every fence in tlio land. In this city there are many of his fences already put up , showing how his patent lock holds the bars of mils , and no one now thinks hero of putting up any sort of a fence or railing without using his patent. Ar.-.ong the recent samples of his work is a vorv neat railing put up in front of II. W. Tillon's . residence on Fifth avenue , opposite the court house. Now that so many of the fences ai'6 oSlng lafcoiTa-way from in fr.Q"t of lawns and private residences , these railings are rapidly taking their places. With Mr. Beckman's patent the rail is held securely , is given a line finish , and yet whenever desirable a rail can betaken taken out by a minute's use of the screw driver. The same is true whenever his locks are used. A section of a fence can be taken right out. and as quickly replaced , at any time , with no trouble or expense. At the same time weather or time cannot cause any weakening or springing of joints. Best of all is , the expense is so nominal that one does not hayo to consider it for a moment , it being really cheaper than to do without it. Mr. Bcckman has struggled hard to get public attention directed to the merits of his patent , but ho is now suc ceeding , and the invention promises to he ono of the most popular and profit able.
