Richmond Dispatch : The most re markable case that hos over como before - fore a Virginia court was tried in the Hustings court of this city , Thomas A. Linton was indicted by the grand jury the day before as boinp a woman in man's npparol. This indictment was nmclu on the oath of Altirtiu M. Ijins- comb , who swore positively before tlio grand jury and the Hustings court that the accused was u female. Mr. Linton , pending the trial , voluntary placed himself in the hands of six medical gen tlemen , all of whom , on their return into court , stated , upon their oaths , that the accused was it well-developed man. On this statement the jury returned a verdict of not guilty , and the licensed was thereupon acquitted. "Somo eighteen months or two years ago a young man , then residing in this city , who understood Lipscomb's character - actor thoroughly , and who would go to any length to enjoy n joke , pointed Mr. Linton out to him at the theatre and told him L. was a young lady in disguise - guise , and promised him an introduc tion. Being a lady's man. and Linton having u very utTominato appearance , Lipscomb became desperately in love with him , and , on the first occasion lie could got , proffered Linton his hand in wedlock. Linton , it is said , to carry on the joko. accepted his offer and they were engaged to bo married. When the time approached for the confirma tion of the nuptial vows Linton suc ceeded in extending it and left the city for several weeks. On his return ho continued the joke , not supposing that anything serious would bo the result , until Lipscomb became -jealous of his friendship for others and broke off the engagement. When these facts became known Lipscomb was jeered by his friends for his credulity , nd having , as lie thought , every reason to believe thii' ' Linton was a woman , and living amongst us in men's apparel , ho appeared before the grand jury and made a btatement which induced that body to take steps to have the matter investigated , " T.Il. 1-AI.MEH.
