The entertainment of the Acme club proved BO excellent that It would pay to repeat It. A second night would cause a crowded house. Alderman Waterman's bill against the rlty for painting ono of the hose reels rend : "For painting real , f 75. " At such n rate an alder man can accumulate "realty" real fast. Officer Thomas lost his revolver yesterday , lie laid It down for a few moments and for got It. Some other icllow didn't fyrgct it , and now Thomas Is hunting for him and the gun. Under Mayor Hohrcr's new license order the saloons are to pay toO a month to the city and must agree to keep closed front and rear on Sundays , and to close at 12 o'clock every night. The building recently occupied by Dr. nice , on Pearl street is being repainted and other wise Improved for the occupancy of Peter Miller , who purposes to enlarge his quarters which nro adjoining it. The Mcrrlam block is now assured and it Is expected that work will commence at a very early date , llids are already called for for the excavation , and the other contracts will follow speedily. The city council met yesterday afternoon ns a board of equalization for the purpose of finishing up thut business. The lists of the changes mailo in assessments of personal property will be posted on Monday next. A party of Shoshone Indians passed through hero yesterday cnrouto for Washington. They numbered seven , and three of them could make themselves quite easily under stood by their knowledge of English. The homo club will cross bats to-day with the C. E. The boys will have to Oo some nolid work if they repeat the scores of last Saturday , ns their contestants are sphere- sluggers ' 'from away back , " The next lecture in the Ilagan course , "Hero nnd There in London , " promises to draw a larger audience than any of the pre ceding ones. All want to see the views and hear the description of this great city. No better and cheaper opportunity was ever of fered to the citizens of Council.Bluffs , who can go all about London for a half dollar. The "dcstrik skulo" entertainment which has gone forth from this city , and sprung into such popularity , was given in Burlington - ton recently , netting over WOJ. No local en tertainment has over been devised which pays better or makes more fun , and those who desire to get up ono of these entertain ments can secure the outline and needed In formation by lending $1 to J. E. Harkncss , of this city. The evening democratic organ defends the nldcrmanlc fee bill , by which $ .100 is to betaken taken out of the city treasury mid put into the pockets of the officials. It prints the law by which such fees can bo charged legally , und then says the fault is with the law , and not with the aldermen , for "it Is made possi ble for a corrupt city government , if they saw fit , to bankrupt any city in six months. " In plain wouU it is nil right , if a man only has the chiincc , and the fault must rest with those who give him the chance. S. \Vndsworth & Co. loan monoy. Some of the city couneilmcn nre unwilling to have the public think that all of the mem bers of that body are concerned in the hood- ling operations that are being transacted in the aldcrmanlo chamber. Alderman Weaver invites nn Inspection of what he Is doing , and wants the papers to criticise him personally if his record Is not what It should bo. Ho re alizes that ho Is In an unenviable position , and says that ho docs not propose to take any city contracts while in office. At the time of his nomination ho held a contract to do some work for the city , but after being elected ho gave It up and allowed it to bo bid fur again , with other work. Quito to the contrary was the action of Al- ilcrman Waterman , who worked to secure for himself a Job that was to have been done by outside parties , and then sent in a bill of 175 for work that would otherwise have cost the city less thun ono-iourth of that amount. Alderman Metcnlf asks the cltlzans to give the council credit for the good work that it does do , nnd to appreciate tlic action of some of its members in holding down the others. Ho Insists that It is unfair for the papers to pcoro the whole body for the actions of a few and says that if a member Is bound to make a steal ho will accomplish it In some way and the others cannot prevent him. Sev eral of the parties swore that they would not my it , nnd announced their intention of lighting the mnyor to tbc last in his oflortu to close them up. A few of the liquor sellers express n purpose of complying with the order , although very much dissatisfied with It nnd thinking It unjust. A HEP reporter visited the mnyor nnd asked him what plnn of action ho proposed to work upon. " Well , " said that oniclnl , "I Bhall do ns I said I would shut them tip promptly If they refuse to pay. My object Is to get revenue for the city. I mil a high-license democrat , but ns long iw the law says no license , of course wo can't grant ono nnd insure the sa loon tncn any protection. 1 refused to close them up n short time ago , as 1 did not think It would be Just lo the clement that elected mr. We , that is the city solicitor and myself think that the temperance alliance people have taken In hand the matter of closing the saloons , and wo will not interfere with their work. What I say is simply this the saloon men must como to time , or out thoygo. Some of them claim that the effector this order will bo to close up the places that arc now being conducted in a respectable manner. and establish a lot of cellar groirttorics and holcs-ln-thc-walls , hut I do not think so , 1 think that it will shut off ninny of the smaller places that are run , and It will also put money in the city treasury. " City Solicitor Holmes was the next ofllcinl visited , nnd his opinion was asked. "Why , " said he. "they will stepup nnd pay It , nnd that will bo all there is to U. " "Hut if thev don't ! " "If they don't they will get shut up so quick that they won't know how it happened. Can wo do It ! Well , I should rather say wo can. Any one who Is violating the law -is disorderly , isn't ' he I Certainly. Well , if they arc disorderly anil keep disorderly houses , out they go. Oh , no , wo don't sny anything nbout the liquor side , for whisky don't enter into the question at all. Wo are not going to help Sims out of Ins trouble , or furnish testimony for the temperance al liance folks. Our charges will bo for keei > - ing disorderly bouses , making a noise , crowds congregating , etc. 1 don't propose to do the work that some ono else is paid for. Sims gets $3,000 or $4,000 out of the temperance folks , and Wright , Baldwin & Hnldanc pull a lot moro from the saloon men. Now let them fight it out. Sims could shut up the saloons If he knew how , but ho don't , and I nm not going to do his work for him. " "Will it make any difference what the charge is , ns long as the result is the same ! " "Oil , it won't shut them up , for they will pay the fine. I don't sco why they want to pay lawyers $ Xi a month , for they don't get anything out of it. It don't protect them a particle. They might just ns well save their money. Now , as far as closing is concerned , I don't think a single ono of the moro re spectable places will make nny kick nt all. But kick or no kick , the thing is going to bo done. They must pay their $ TiO u month and take their chances. They don't have nny protection now , and they will hnvo Just as much then. They can roar if they wnnt to , ns that Is a constitutional right , but they can't sell booze unless they pay for the privilege. " Where the Money GOCH. City Engineer Stimpson is inclined to take exceptions to the insinuations that ho Is incurring needless expense in conducting the affairs of bis ofllcc. Ho stated to a BEE re porter yesterday that he had the same num ber of men in employ ns wns had during the previous administration , and this was no more than was necessary to secure n careful nnd able execution of the duties Imposed. This force would have to bo increased in the near future in order to do the clerical work of the olllce. This work will bo greatly in creased from the fact that the engineer is about to prepare a full transcript of all the improvement work which has already been done in the city. This will show when the work was done , to whom the contract was let , at what price , and such other facts as are necessary to make a perfect record. He will also prepare a record of the city , by lots , which will show the number , addition , by whom owned , etc. These and other things the engineer deems necessary to bo done that the odlco may bo properly equipped , nnd the city supplied with the records which it abso lutely needs. From the above facts that oflleml claims that any comparison with the expense of any previous year is both unfair and unjust. Ho says ho proposes running tbc onico economically , but at the same time "with duo reference to the public service und the demands of the ofllcu. Another Hurjjlnry. The grocery store of M , O. Calcf , 530 West Broadway , was entered by a burglar Thurs day night , but no articles were missed when the clerk opened the store in the morning. Entrance was effected by cutting out a pane of glass in n rear window , allowing the burglar to enter the back room. Another light was then broken in a window between this room and the store , but as this window was double , the thief turned his attention to the door , cutting n hole through u panel , through which ho could reach to turn the key and slide the bolt. The money drawer was torn front its fastenings and loft on tbc tloor by the stove. It contained 13 cents , but that was left. A sack containing about ( It was secreted In another part of tha store , but the thlel was unable to find iU This is the second burglary In as many nights , and proves beyond a doubt that some now gang of law-brcukcrs is in the city. The question of handling liquors was discussed to some extent , anil although no action was taken in the inattci it was the prevailing sentiment that Intoxl cunts could not bo safely handled , ami It ii probable that at the next meeting a rc&olu tlon to that effect will bo passed. XII KY AvTlih 810N. And the Sioux HescrvntUm Will Soon Contain White Sottlcrt * . PiErinc , Dak. , May 10. ( Special to Tun Inn. ] At this time the topic of the hour and the nil absorbing question Is , "Will the Indi ans sign the treaty opening the Sioux reser vation to flottlcment by the whites I" During be past f ew dnys , nnd since the signing of the Kloux bill by the president , mnny Indians of Importance and high standing In their ribcs have been in the city nndbnvo'bccu ntcrvicved upon this question nnd now the opinion prevails that the commission will soon complete Its work when appointed and n the Held. Most of the Indians at least those of the Cheyenne ngeiicy nro nnxiously waiting to have the matter closed up nnd out of the way. Little No Heart , a prominent mil Inlluential man nnd the nrknowlcdgcd cniler of the Two Kettle hand of Sioux , says ! ' 1 want my people to sign the treaty , tnko .heir lands In severally , improve them , raise corn , wheat and cattle , and live like the whites. Woaro tired of this roaming life and must learn to become self-supporting. " Charger , n powerful man in the Sioux na tion , to use his own words , says : ' 'It is oulv a question of a few years when wo must give up our Indian ways nnd customs nnd tulopt those of the whites ; wo must IcaVo the hunting grounds nnd labor in the fields , tilling- the soil that was given us by our forefathers ; wo must give up the chase ns the days when the plains furnished us n living arc passed never to return. The buf falo , the elk nnd the deer that Inhabited our prairies only n few years ago nro no moro , and wo fully realize that the government nnd the great father at Washington will not always support us in idleness. While the provisions of the Sioux bill , ns they hiu-o been explained to me , are not in accord with our views in every particular , they nro good nnd nro nil that the Indian could desire , nnd wo must accept them , take our money nnd our cattle nnd go to work. The settling on these lands by the whites means that wo shall bo paid nnd with the proceeds of the sales.Ve can educate our children nnd place them ui > on such n footing that in a few years wo hope that they will rank with the children of the whites in industry and m- tclliucncc. " The ideas expressed by these two Indians arc the ideas of the lenders and most of the members of the various tribes or bands of Cheyenne ngency , and with such idcns pre vailing among the Indians , the people of this locality and those most Intimately connected witli the red men regard the obtaining of the requisite number of signatures a matter of but little difficulty.
