( pWfMTO THE OMAHA DAILY BEE-SATURDAY. : MAY 12 , 1SS . THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , "Shorta" Frightened By n Sudden Spurt in Wheat. SOME VERY BAD CROP NEWS. Corn Stronger mid Advancing OntB C ultc Active fright Triullne In Provisions HORS nnil Cntllc Hi-Ink. CHICAGO IMtODUCB MAIIKBT. CHICAGO , Mny 11. [ Special Tclogrnm to Tim UEB.IVhcnt opened KC higher this morning than It closed last night , advancing J c more In less than half an hour and took fell the remainder of the morning session to Rain < c more , closing nt the top jirioe. It would bo safe to say that this upturn was n complete fiurpn'so to three-fourths of the local traders , many of whom went homo "short" of wheat last night firmly believing that the heavy realizing which broke tha market yesterday would be continued to-day und that line growing weather would help depress prices. After the advance once stnrtctl these sntno shorts were of great as sistance In putting prices up. Inttcad of the bearish news from crops which was expected , everything that cunio was dccldudly bullish. First came reports from the northwest of exceedingly wet weather mid temperature below freezing point In the spring wheat country. With the season already very late nnil seeding not finished this mada n very gloomy outlook for spring wheat this year and was the greatest stimulus to early buy- Ing. .Later came reports of chinch bugs In the southwest and continued dry and hot weather In California with no improvement In the condition of wheat. Another strength ening feature was found in receipts nt pri mary markets , which were less than for months before. Early public cables nuotetl n downward tendency to wheat , but this wus not continued later on and private cables wcro steady. Exports of wheat amounted to nothing , but of Hour they continued fair. American wheat bulls say there can bo no objection to foreigners refus ing to take our wheat unground provided they continue to buy Hour , in which there Is a profit for American millers , as farmer's wheat. Buying to-day was largely done by commission houses whoso clientage is out side the ciy. } Houses with Now York con nections were good buyers. The local crowd with the nxccption of a few pronounced bulls wcro lighting the advance all the way up. The argument of the bears is that the gov ernment crop report gives the condition of May , Just after the most trying time and be fore the rnm came , and that there has been a great Improvement since. To this the bulls reply that the area plowed up and the recent damage to California crops will more than offset any improvement in condition. July Wheat opened at SOc , sold up to bOl c , back to 80/8 ; ; c , up to 8t Xc , back to bt > J.f@S < 5 ; > tfc again , up to tvijfc , bacK to STiJ e , up to 87c , down to SCJ ffibtyfjfo up to btj&c , back to 6 < y c , up to and closing at 8 } { c. Juno wheat opened ut 8.r c , sold up to and closed at SOc. The corn market also was strong , and opened at an advance of 3/@Ko over last night's closing figures and made a further gain of % tea for different deliveries. May was strongest because of the covering of short corn-cribbcrs who had long ago sold for May against corn which they owned and who are now buying in their shorts and selling the more deferred deliveries. ! It is thought that the re maining short interest in May is of this Wild. Wet weather has prevented the shell ing of corn and made grading hazardous or corn would have been delivered. As it is , the only thing cribbcrs can do is to change over into Juno and July , and this they are doing. May corn opened nt fiTltfe , sold from 67u up to SSJdc and closed at 1 o'clock at ' C8c. Juno corn opened at Wic , sold up to nnu closed nt U > % c. July corn opened at 60c. sold up to 57c and closed at 5SJiJg57e. ! ( The strength in the other grain markets was reflected in oats , which touched the highest prices thus far reached and closed at or about the top. Trade was quite active. May oats sold up from ! ! 4c to 'do , closing at 84e. Juno oats opened at IM c , sola at : ! : ijf @ % ) % c up to and closing nt IMc. July oats sold up from i3c ! to 33J e , closing at 83c. August oats sold from -So to 2'Jc , and Sep tember from 28o to U3.J < e. In provisions the quiet feeling shown lately was continued. In some respects trade commanded , perhaps , a little more attention , but there was no increase in outside business and the day's trading , all told , was under an average volume. Still the market was ilrm In fact tnucli firmer than operators ex pected under the receipts of hogs hero and at interior points and better prices wcro estab lished. Grangers were stronger , but the Vandcr- bllts wcro quiet. The reduction of 10 routs on cast-bound rates for cattle and 15 cents for sheep was expected to have a depressing effect , but there did not appear to bo enough Block offered to cause a decline of over } { , which was followed by an advance of X. The sharp soiling of Texas Pacific late yes terday was not continued to-day , and those who were RO conspicuous in It appeared rather crestfallen and admitted that they lost their heads and sold on the slowness of th.o governing committee In listing the new $15,000,000 Missouri Pacitlc loan. The latter stock broke X early , but before 1 o'clock had rallied 1 point. It Is said that bull cliques took advantage of the rise last week and sold most of their stock aiul arc waiting 'for a chance to buy Uicm back. The report sent by President Cable , of the Hock Island roajl. that the northwestern roads would soon ad vance rates encouraged the bulls in those securities and they ilovulcned uorc strength. The most potent fnclor of the market during the last hour was the ncccptnnco by the government of 14,220,235 bond * , the entire offerings to-day.
