[ Special Telegram to the linn. ] The tendency of the wheat market was downward this morning , but the decline was small , nnd part of it was recovered be fore the close of the morning session. An , early cable quoted n downward tendency for wheat in Liverpool , but this was the onlv bit of news on the side of the bears , and it was doubtful if even this had much effect upon them. Their strength lay rather In the ab sence'of any fresh sensational stimulating news for thtf other side. There was bull news , to bo sure , but it was in the form of bad crop rejiorts and only confirmatory of things known so mo days ago , and thought , when first known of , to warrant higher prices , Hut holders grow tired when the upward movement halts. They nro glad to take their profits even if they aresmall , when they see that these profits have stopped growing. It Is Just this condition of things for which the short seller waits with confi dence. So this morning , after tnreo or four days of small fluctuations , there wcro plenty of believers in a decline , llutclilnson was the most conspicuous seller early , but ho had many followers. At the decline llutclilnson wiw the best buyer , while Hcam sold freely , nnd some recent buyers , like Mitchell nnd doom , wcro sellers. The weather map was much consulted to-duy. It showed a few interesting things for the bulls. Ono was , that it was again clear In San Francisco , nnd that the twenty-four hours' rainfall there had been but 14 of an inch. It was snowing in St. Paul , and reports from Dulutli said that the weather was cold and wet. Receipts cf wheat at interior markets showed consid erable falling off us compared with recent days. Exports , however , continue small , and this is ono discouraging feature of the situa tion to the bulls. The only explanation offered is that great Britain has contracted for a large amount of Itussian wheat , and will not bo an anxious buyer in American markets until that wheat arrives and is mostly consumed. July wheat opened at 8. } c , sold down to S3 ( 830 , up to 81X@S3JiC , then down to h3o , but with very few sales at that price , then up to M > fe which was the price nt tno 1 o'clock clotu. Juno wheat , opened at 823 @ 82 c , sold up to t"c , down to 82e and closed at 1 o'clock at SUife. The covering of shorts in May corn which was the feature of that market yesterday \vus continued to-day. It sent the price of Mny corn up from 57o to f Sc , the highest point yet reached nnd at thq close 57j c was asked for that delivery. Trade in other futures was quite light with very little l change to note in prices as a result of the I morning's trading. Some of the longs , however - ' over , were selling May at the top and buying Juno and July , which at one time caused Homo advance in those deliveries. Receipts wcro considerably less than expected and this was n strengthening feature. Juno and July corn opened at f5\c , sold down to f > fi ? ( SfitJ c , and closed at 1 o'clock nt55' . ) < f@5r > Ji'e. On the upturn Juno corn touched 55J < e and July BOc. There was continued tr.lU of a squeeze In May oats , and the covering of shorts put that delivery up : lrfc from yesterday's close , the price at 1 o'clock being 32J < e. The other olit crop futures wcro rather helped by this de mand , but more deferred futures were easier. Juno and July oats opened at 82c , which was } { c above yesterday's close , sold tit 32J c , and closed Juno at H2fe , and July at ! ' 2' c. August oats opened nnd closed at S c , ranging from SS OJfe to 2Sc. Septem ber oats sold down from 28 , ' < to 2Se. In provisions a strong feeling was gener ally exhibited. A fair interest was also shown and in the different lines a compara tively good business was transacted with Juno , July nnd August the favorite deliver ies. In trading lard was leader. Values all uround fluctuated within a moderate limit nnd at 1 o'clock exhibited no radical change from last night's closings. May pork and short ribs were quoted 5c and May 2j < fc under June. CHICAGO , May 4.- [ Special Telegram to the Hp.K.l CATTU : Trading was somewhat Irregular. Prices , however , wcro about lOo higher on dcsirablo grades.
