Wednesday , May 2,1883. The receipts of cattle to-day fell short of yesterday's receipts by nbout 700 head. The majority of the buyers made heavy purchases yesterday nnd they did not require as many cattle to-day. For this reason the mnrxct was hardly as brisk ns yesterday but nbout all the tattle offered on sale were taken. The market was a little easier than yester day nnd salesmen found it difficult to obtain yesterday's prices unless it might bo on lomething very desirable. The general qual ity of the cattle was not very extra and sales men complained of the scarcity of neat , tidy cattle. lings. There was a slight Increase In the receipts of hogs over yesterday but some of the trains came In ralher lalo nnd five loads nrrlrcd after the market had closed. The market was active nnd about steady at the opening but ng the Inter trains arrived it cased oft and closed n shade to 5c lower. The market was weaker on light hogs while Iho better grades of heavy hogs held up more nearly steady. Slicci > . There were two loads of corn fed westerns hero nnd sold. llecelpts. Bill Arp in AtlnnUi Constitutiou : I was discoursing witli an old Georgian to-duyu school-male whom I had not BOCII for forty yoara. anil I lot him do most nil the talking mid could read his emotions us ho spoke of his old homo , and of lion Hill , and the Parrels , and Judge Bull , and Bingham , and Bacon and Ridley. He said ho was in. the court-house at La Grange and Ben Hill was sitting near him , when Thomas W. Thomas came in and handed Mr. Hill a letter. That letter contained a chal lenge from Alex. Stephens to fight a duel. Mr. Ilill read it , but did not ex hibit the slightest embarassmont or ex citement. Ho was engaged intho cnso at the bar , and , putting the letter in his pocket , attended to the case and made an admirable argument and gained the case. Then he took my friend by the arm and asked him logo with him to his olllco. There he showed him the challenge and remarked : "Of course I will not I cannot fight Mr. Stephens - ens _ . My whole nature is shocked at it. It is a horrible barbarity and proves nothing. I will decline and pub lish my reasons. " The next morning ho showed his reply to my friend. It was copied and approved by him and some other personal friends ; both whigs and democrats endorsed it heart ily. That withering reply that unan swerable rebuke is still fresh in the memories of Georgians , and did more to abolish the code of honor than has been done in a century. Mr. Stephens pub lished Mr. Hill as a coward , but it amounted to nothing. Mr. Ilill con tinued to advance in popularily and lost nothing in friends or renown. Mr. Stephens had in a public speech spoken of the known-nothing party leaders as traitors to their country , and Mr. Hill replied by saying that the parallel was on the other side ; that the whig party had for many years showered its honors and its favors upon Mr. Stephens , and no\y ho had turned from it and betrayed it like Judas Iscariot did his Lord and Mastcrand the only difference was that Judas repented and hanged himself ; but he was sorry to say that Mr. Stephens was still unrepentant and un hanged. For this language Mr. Ste phens challenged him. The Great Lick Telescope. In three weeks' time the Lick observ atory on Mount Hamilton will bo fin ished. In commenting on it the San Fnuicisco Call says : All that now re mains to be done is to place the large hydraulic rams for lifting the door into position. To complete this work six men from the Union Iron Works leave to-day for the observatoryand they will work strenuously to have it completed oven before the time specified. As soon a the floor is in perfect working order the regents of the state university will accept the observatory. They are go ing there this week to inspect the ma chinery , buildings , and instruments before - , , fore receiving them from the Lick Trust. They are four raniBto bo erected. The are similar to those Ubcd in ordin ary elevators , but arc made telescopic , bo that no boring in the rock underneath is required for them. Automatic valves will work them , and this device , it is believed , will leave no room for danger from accidents. The immense floor to bo lifted by these rams weigh between fifteen and twenty tons. The frame work for it is of steel sections riveted together nnd covered with boarding On it will stund the astronomer when ho uses the great telescope to look at the heavens.
