In the course of his sermon ho referred to the discussion which bus recently caused so much trouble in the Congregational denomination. Some had taken the position that If the doctrine was held that the unenlightened heathen would bj saved , this would kill the very nerve of the mil sioimry work. Mr. Crofts said that ho did not ngrco with this view. For ono , ho did iot : know what God would do with the unenlightened heathen. Ho was satisfied that God would deal with them in Justice nnd In mercy. Ho thought there was too much stress laid upon conjectures as to what God would do about this nnd that mysterious matter. The great question to determine for each ono was what God wanted him to do. It was fnough for each ono to learn his own duty , and learning It , perform it , leaving these mysteries for God to take care of. Largest stock of wall paper over seen in the city. A paper upon "Tho Objects and Work of the Workers' Training Class" was read bv Mr. W. M. In the former the main features were an address by Dr. Phelps , of the Presbyterian church.and the annual re port oflocal secretary , G. D. Baker. As this is of general interest , as showing the. practical side of association worlc , the report as read Is herewith given : Mr. President and Friends : Wo meet to celebrate the sixth anniver sary of the Young Men's Christian associa tion of Council BlulTj. This is , or should be , the most important branch of our work. During a part of the year three religious services were held each week , as follows : Young men's meeting , average attend ance 83. Workers' training class , average attend ance 7. Boys' branch , average attendance 29. Since January 1 four have proposed con version. Literary and Social. The literaries and sociables , which wore enjoyable , growing in torcst and attendance , had to bo discontinued for want of room. A number of young men have been assisted by meals anil lodging given them , while others , through the aid of the association , have fgund employment. During the year employment has beer found for sixteen young men. We believe that many of the young men led astray , are these out of employment , becoming coming discouraged and homesick. The speaker showed how the association developed the physical , social , mental , moral and spiritual sides of a young man's nature. In this working for thobcttcrlngof the whole mati the association was running nlone the line of Christianity , which sought the same result. Ho spoke of the necessity of saving the young men. Ho presented startling facts In regard to the number of young criminals , and also called attention to the prominence taken by young men In all the worthy walks ofllfonlso. It seemed In this ngo that the character of most young men are fixed by the time they were twenty years of ngo. Hcnco tlio necessity for saving the young men. The rain did excellent janitor worlc nt the court house , the best work of the kind done about the building. It washed off the broad stone steps , making them quite clean. If thereof roof of the now building could have been taken off nnd the rain given n chance to wash out the corridors , it would have Improved the appearance of the building greatly. The now court house is ono of the idlest in the west , nnd it is already ono of the dirtiest. There arc stairways whlclilook as if they had not felt the refreshing tickling of a broom since they were put in. It Is not evident what the Janitor does with his time , nnd If ho employs it In trying to keep the building clean , there certainly is need of about ten more men like him. As ono of the attaches of the olllccs i-cmarkcd yesterday , "this building is as dirty already as the old ono was. The old building had ono advantage. There wasn't so much of it to get dirty.1' The yard is In a hopeless state of disorder. Old stoves , boxes , ashes , stones , old wagons nnd plows , an endless variety of trash Is scattered about. The manufacture of gloves is not by any moans of recent date ; hut the an cient use of this article of dress was rare and occasional , whereas the modern use is common and universal. Leather , when prepared for this purpose , under goes a much lighter dressing than when prepared for any other article of com merce. Franco has long been celebrated for its glove manufactories , but Now York lias now become recognized as n strong competitor. The Jlrst operation in glove making is to stretch out on a piece of marble and render uniform with n blunt knife the surface of the skin of which the gloves are to bo made , after which it is to bo reduced Into pieces ol convenient length and width , without cutting the material to waste. Before cutting , however , the ekin is dampened either by rubbing it with a wet cloth or putting it in rt damn place. It is then sounded and examined with n view to the discovery of faults or blem ishes , so that they may bo avoided in cutting out , or at least that they may bo bo placed as to bo unimportant. There are regular scales of sizes for men's am women's gloves and for ttio width of the thumb pieces , which are cut out at the same time and are proportioned to the particular size required. In order to cut the skin to th6 best advantage , it it stretched from time to time by pullinj it at the edges , between the thumb ant the knife. When it 1ms been thus elongated and widened the actual cut ting nrocoss commences. Here it is that the American glovomakors have i great advantage over the English nni French , In cutting up a dozen skins o equal sire , on American will gen erally manage to get ono or two pairs of gloves over and above the number which an Englishman or Frenchman cun cut from the same pkinB , and these not inferior or scanty bu't well and handsomely shaped as the rest The shape of the gloves to bo cut IB not the only thing to ho attended to Grout care must bo taken that the same Ehado of color prevails throughout eacl pair , for it frequently happens tha there hra cloudy spots and gradations of color to the skin , which would bo destructive of beauty and good affect The skin thus cut is in order now to be fecwed , and the machine used is of i peculiar pattern , the feed wheel o which is lipped with a metal comb through the points of which the needle carry the silk and make an unusufillj bpaody aud neat stitch' . .
