Now York Times : "It's the easiest tiling in the world whan you do it prop erly , ' ' Hermann Roicho , the dealer In wild . animals , renmrkcd yesterday morning to nn otnnloyo who was having Bomo little difllculty in transferring eight anacondas from the rough wooden hex in which thpy had just arrived at the Park-row establishment to a glass onso placed for their reception in the front store next to the ono occupied by JOBS , the dancing baboon. DThree months ago n child could have handled the spotted beauties with im punity , because then they would have been fully under the inllucnco of the torpor which overcomes them in the winter months , but which departs as soon as the warmth of summer begins to bo felt. As the seven snakes , which had not yet boon transferred , running from twelve to sixteen foot in length , IR. celled together in a corner of the box , they looked very pretty and quite harmless. Occasionally ono of them would Bend n muscular thrill through his _ con voluted organism which would stir the whole mass a little , and now nnd then a forked tongue would dart out and dis appear in an instant. Otherwise they looked absolutely lethargic and per fectly frco from guile. So , when young Roiclio proceeded to show how easy it was to handle the South American boa- constrictor , when the proper method was pursued it looked as though the man engaged in the work hardly heeded the prolTercd instruction. "You simply seize the snake first by the neck , close 'by the head , "thus , " said Mr. Roicho , suiting the action to the word , and causing the serpent mass to shudder throughout it's entire extent. "Then , " ho added as ho drew the snake ho had grasped out from the constrictpr tauglo of which it formed part , "when its tnid- dlo shows up , thus , you grasp it gently but firmly , thus , and .lift it into the glass case , thus. " The snake dropped softly into the case , lay as it foil , and so did live others , each of them bearing patient testimony to the facility with which the biggest kind of snakes are handled , when properly handled. The seventh took upon himself to prove the converse ) of Mr , Roicho's es tablished proposition. Ho was not handled properly. Mr. Roicho made a careless grab for his neck and caught it about thrco inches below the head instead of close to it. In nn instant the reptile , the largest ono of the lot , tossed torpor to the winds and began very energetically to dart its open jaws in the direction of his captor's wrist with very unamiablo intent. Mr. Roicho lifted the the writhing snake's head high in the air and boizcd it by the middle. The snake resented the action and freed itself by a muscular oiTort that was irresistably strong and'suddon. In a moment the snake was free of the box nnd began twining its lith form around young Roicho's log and body. Roicho , who is well aware of the crush ing power of of a constrictor's hug , called for help , and every employe of the establishment was at tils side in an instant. They know how to act in the emergency , and in a very few moments they nnd unwound the anaconda , de- Bpito its powerful struggles , and placed it in the glass case , whore it at once lapsed into a condition of content , very strangely in contrast with its previous excitement. "Not so easy to handle anacondas , af ter all , " the instructed employe re marked to his master , smiling. "Yes , eaid Mr. Rcicho , who looked a little palo. and frankly acknowledged that ho had had a bad scare ; "tho trouble was that I handled that follow wrongly. Al ways catch thorn close as possible to the head. " _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ( Severe Treatment of a Mormon Con vert. Philadelphia Lodger : The Mormon missionaries who have boon trying tc "ovangolixo" the cotmt.y people in portions tions of West Virginia have not mot with a cordial reception from many ol the natives , nor have their occasional converts become objects of popular ven eration. "AmongthodUtrictsin which those missionaries have boon at work , ' says 11 special to the Now York World , "is that of Yellow Crook , in Calhomi county. They made several converts when the people became indignant and ran thorn out of the county. Several ol the converts remained after the mis- sioniirios loft and the citizens began tc threaten them with all sorts of voir Roanco. John \V. Metis , ono of the converts , received several threatening loiters ordering him to leave. Motz , in- atoad of leaving the neighborhood rented another farm and was preparing to move , when on the night before the house ho was to occupy was burner down , nnd a letter tacked on the fence in which the writers threatened Xo burn every house ho tried to occupy. Mots was stubborn nnd determined to remain nnd secure another house , which was also burned the night before ho was tc move in it. Ho failed to gut anothoi house for BOIUO time , the owners boinj ( afraid tholr property would sulTor , bul nt last ho succeeded , nnd was prepar ing1 to move again when that , too , \\nt burned , making in all thrco houses within a few weeks. The ofllcors np pear to have no clue to the porpctnv tors , who now threaten Motz with dealt if ho does not leave. There were r number of alleged Mormon converts ii the neighborhood , but they have al boon frightened off or run out of the connty. THE SHORTS HASTEN TO COVER , A Featureless Day In the Corn Pit Fair Trading In Oats Provisions Practically Stiulonnry Cattle - tlo Slow. CHICAGO PllODUQIS MAIIKET. CIIICAOO , April 23. [ Special Telegram to the BEE. ! Nothing but rnln or rnthcr the lack of rnln was of much Interest to wheat traders this morning , Thcso gentleman biul gene homo yesterday with confidence In the prediction that , it would rain last night , but what tttlo rain did coma was far from the winter wheat bolt. Now preparations had been mndo for a weakness and a drop in prices which should attend a liberal rain fall In the winter wheat country , such prepara tions consisting in "soiling short" of greater or less amounts. Thcro was an early dispo sition to cover that short wheat with the least iwsslblo loss , and under that demand there was afo higher opening nnd an immediate further advance of jftc. There did not seem to bo nny great demand for wheat from outside - side sources , however , nnd asldo from the weather nnd qrop reports generally , news was a trlllo bearish , Receipts were largo and exports practically nothing , whllo Now York advised that orders for wheat for expert - port wcro below the market , though later It was rejxirtcd that fourteen boat loads had been taken. Cables wcro no lower , but that was the best that could bo said for them. Moreover , It was esti mated that the visible supply would show llttlo or no decrease. These things inado some longs willing to take small profits and encouraged some short selling , the prlco de clining to about the opening figures , then , on the report of wheat taken for export ns men tioned above , there was a sharp advance of about % c , half of which was lost before the close. Juno wheat opened nt 81J c , advanced to 82 c , declined to S2 > cnnd closed at 82 > ( < i 8'c. ! May wheat opened nt SO c , sold nt @SO c , up to 81 , 0 nnd closed at 80 c. The estimates of the winter wheat crop were much talked about , the bears claiming that .hey showed a better prospect than other recent cent reports , but If the condition in Michigan , Ohio , Indiana and Illinois bo taken as there _ ivcn nnd from that be deducted the proportions tions to DO plowed ns is evidently meant , the prospect would seem to bo quite ns bad ns that of nil but the most extreme reports. In dividual reports continue bad and one of the most important received to-day was from California saying that the San Joaquin valley exceed two-thirds of last ' could not - year's crop and would probably bo less. There was no especial feature to the corn market to-day. It was almost monopolized by scalping local traders and the course of prices seemed to depend very much upon whether a majority of those traders were long or short at nny particular time. Kc- ccipts were considerably less than expected , and this , with the continued dry weather , helped to ndvauco the market which fell again , when the estimate of still larger re ceipts for Monday became known , then nd- .vnnced again on an evening up by shorts , preparatory for Sunday. Juno corn opened at 54c , which was J @ c higher than yes terday's close , advanced to 55e , declined to fiJJ e , sold up to 55c again nnd closed nt. > 4J < c. The report of the secretary of the Illinois grain dealers association upon the amount of corn outside the visible supply has Just been made. It states thnt there are but about 500,000 bushels of corn in the aggregate at all the stations on the Is. & M. road. Both estimates are much smaller than has been generally believed. There was rather an active speculative trade in oats with the market strong and higher early , declining later under frco real izing sales , but recovering again before the close. May oats opened at 32c and closed at32U c. Juno and July oats opened and closed nt 32Xc , August closing at 29 c , September oats sold from 28fc to 2S ) c. In the provision trade there was no un usual change. Cash property met with a comparatively fair demand , but the specula tion indulged in was limited and featureless. Still the market commanded fair attention , and prices were hold steady nt the late de pression. Based on last night's final prices , the closings showed a scarcely quotable alteration. Now York Journal : A stout man in buir-colored overalls climbed a ladder which ho had placed in front of the store windows of No. 7tt Bergen street , Brooklyn , yesterday morning and with one swoop of a paint brush obliterated the lettering which had appeared on a black sign with ti gilt border. Several men and a couple of ladies saw the painter wipe out the lettering1. From the language used hy the men it would appear that they would have boon most happy to have como in contact , if only for a few minutes , with the indi vidual whoso name had graced that Mgn. "Johnson d'Abore , Tonsorinl parlors. Special parlor for ladies. " This is what the signboard had said. And the place had gained some ropnto among the fashionable people in that section. The parlors were handsomely fitted. np and the proprietor had plenty of cus tomers. What caused the obliteration of the Danish barber's name from the sign waa the fact that he had gone away leaving behind him innumerable debts , a dis consolate wife , and taking with him a pretty Swedish girl who was madly ia love with him. A year ago last July ' 'Professor" Juka Bigolow , who was then proprietor ol the tonborlnl parlors , died , leaving n pretty and plump little German widow , who continued the business with the financial assistance and custom of "Snapper" Garrison , the woll-known jockey. She eventually engaged John- bond'Aboro to superintend the work. Afterward she married him. Having become proprietor of the place , IVAboro also became a man about townand in the course of his excursions about the city ho met Augusta Larson , who kept the White Star laundry , at No.17U Bergen street. She had u good business , and 'ould alTord to enjoy her self. The shine of the Dane's patent leathers or bis handbonio whiskers caught her fancy , and when ho told her ho was u bachelor she accepted his ad vances. Uo told her ono day last wcok thnt ho had sold out hlB.busincss and was going out west. She was disconsolate nnd ho pursunded lior that they might be happy together if she would boll out nnd ac company him. This was putting hen love to the test , but she was equal to the emergency. For fcovoral days the Dane wont among his friends borrowing monov. He managed to collect about 8300. He 'got 20 of this from plumber Thoinna Pitt and $48 from a poor Norwegian domestic , who had lately received the money from the old country. In the meantime Augusta sold out her laundry. On Saturday the pair loft the city and it is supposed that they are on their way west together. , The departure of the Dtino became known Saturday evening and his wife went into hysterics when told of it. The people to whom ho owed money put tbo sherilTs into the tonsorinl parlors on Monday and the deserted wlfo doesn't know how bho will got thorn out. A Policeman Ilen. CHICAGO , April 28 , A police officer , Joha E. Kccf , committed Bulcldo by shooting this inrnlng. He was despondent o > ving to pro longed illness.
