CHICAGO PHODUCC MARKET.
CitiCAOO , April I7. ! [ Special Telegram
to tlio Hnn.l It wns a weather market and
a waiting market In wheat this morning. The
opening was strong and higher apparently
because promised rains in the principal win
ter wheat states did not , come. This fright
ened some shorts Into covering and gave the
speculative market almost Its only activity ,
and that Just nt the opening. After that the
market sagged very slow Indeed , and with
occasional small reactions , but It had n per
sistent downward tendency , and during the
morning session amounted to nearly Ic from
the highest point. The bearish feature wus
contained In the reports of ruin from Mis
souri , Kansas and other points In the south-
vest , coupled with the information Unit thcso
rains wcro extending eastward. Aside from
the Immediate affect of the weather , how
ever , it looked as if believers In wheat had
bought about all they wanted at these prices ,
and were waiting for some bullish news to
compel the shorts to cover and put prices up
where they would have a prolltor for the bears
to sell thn market down , when wheat could
bo bought lower. On the other hand , tno
bears seemed to have put out about as much
short wheat as they cured to at the price ,
and wcro watting for rain or weariness and
impatience to make the bulls drop their long
wheat nncl so put the market down for them.
Extremely light trading , with scarcely uny
outsldo orders all morning , seemed to indi
cate such a state of things , and the expres
sion of opinion , both by the bulls and bears ,
pointed the sumo way. A moderate decline
was not unexpected , nnd indeed was rather
welcomed , oven by believers In higher prices ,
as giving an opportunity to buy at lower llg-
urcs. The great majority of crop news is
still bad , but occasionally there Is n report
of opposite tenor. There were some better
reports to-day from Missouri tiiul n fuw from
Indiana. Keccipts of wheat in the north
west crow larger instead of smaller , nnd ex
port clearances wcro not worth mentioning ,
nil of which was an aid to the bears.
But , on the other hand , cables were
stronger , and tlio demand for cash
wheat hero does , not indlcato that
the grain Is n drug. Hard wheat was bought
here to-day at S2c f. o. b. for millers in south
ern Illinois and also for millers In Ohio. A
dispatch from Now York said that futures
were sold thcro to-day for London account ,
but bought for the continent. Juno wheat
hero opened at b'JJfc , v hlch was ? ( fo higher
than yesterday's close , held between that
price and W e for awhile , then full to 62 , fc ,
advanced to W e , nnd very slowly declined ,
with small but infrequent reactions , to b-c ,
mid Just before the close dtoppcd to SldQ
81Jf c , closing there nt 1 o'clock. May whe.it
opened ut 81ic , soU down to and closed at
buke.
Tlio speculative corn market opened strong
and higher , and advanced somewhat early in
the session , but fell later in sympathy with
wheat nnd upon some free Eollinif by receiv
ing nouses. The pit wus very dull during
most of the session. All the trudo in Muy is
by these who have open conti acts In that delivery -
livery and arc closing thorn up or changing
them over , all new contracts being made
in the more deferred futurcsi Dry weather
is culled a bullish inlluencu in corn , because
it compels the feeding of greater quantities
through the failure of pnsturuge ; but , on the
other linuii , it tends to maku grading better
and It rather favorable for preparing the
ground for the next crop , .luno corn opened
nt 5u' ' < c , sold up to D. > ( dc , down to 55c , up to
5 ! > j > cgfic ( ! , then gradually down to about
GlJtu , mill moro rapidly to 51 JJe. when sev
eral houses began selling ficely near the
close. Tlio closing nt 1 o'clock was at fil'xje.
May corn opened ut 53J < c , bold up to CO c ,
down to and closing ut 55o.
May oats opened nt D'-'fc ' , sold nt H2Jffc ,
down to iU-tfc , closing at 1 o'clock at 'Mtfc.
Juno oats sold from : i2Xc , down to 'M&c ,
closing nt 83'ic. August outs opened ut

closing ut asjfo. For September oats SSJi'c
was asked at the opening , and they sold down
to and closed nt-S'fcC.
The provision trudo Is still in n depressed
condition. Tlio syndicate In pork , as well as
forelpn houses and others interested in lard
nnd short ribs , have apparently withdrawn
their support simultaneously , and us a conso-
qucnca the market recedes under the slight
est pressure.
Hogs were again in fair supply to-day
