CHICAGO rnonuoE MARKET.
CIIICAOO , April 20. [ Special Telegram
to the BER.I The wheat market fluctuated
less wildly to-day , but there was n fair
range enough to make speculation proflta-
llo If speculators1 conclusions wcro right.
There was also plenty of excitement soon
after the opening , when one of the persistent
Boilers of the Inst few days began to cover
his big line of short wheat. Things wcro
very unsettled before the opening. Early in
the morning for Instance , 83c had been paid
for May wheat on the open board , but on the
regular board first sales were at 82c and
there was some decline from that price al
most Immediately. The noticeable sellers
wcro the commission houses who had been
buying for several days and had handsome
profits for their customers. Thls'ronllzlngby
the longs served to make the crowd feel
rather bearish and make the market easier
fOr a llttlo while , but when it was seen that
a prominent sTiort was covering , the price
was run up on him Jtfo or
moro very rapidly. The bullish Influ
ences to-day wore just , the same at
for a week past ; chiefly the datnngo to the
winter wheat , next n. late season for seeding
spring wheat , and n shade of encouragement
for holders In the possibility of foreign polit
ical complications looking towards war.
There was nothing now , however , In any of
these things to-day , and the arinimcnt of
short sellers was that the top nad been
reached , and that a reaction was inevitable
unless moro stimulating news should come.
May wheat opened at 82c , sold down to 81 c ,
up to 82c , down to 81' @Slc , up to Sl c ,
down to 81&81J4c. then up to 82V , held
between that price and 81J < c for some time ,
then fell back to Sljff i81c , advanced to and
closed at 1 o'clockntfc'Jc. Juno wheat opened
nt 83 Vc , sold at SSJgo and down to b2c ,
closing at 1 o'clock at 83@8ac.
The speculative corn market lacked inter
est. The local crowd seemed to bo bearish ,
and after the first batch of buying orders
had been filled , gradually sold the
market down , and without any great
trade or quick lluctuatlons at any time.
The receipts were not as lariro as expected ,
but the grading was much better. The esti
mates for to-morrow are large. The bears
nro looking for greatly increased receipts
soon and better grading because of ship
ments of country cribbers to 1111 May sales
Which they have made. They talk lower
prices , but short sellers of corn have had
several hard "twists" lately and they have
become cautious. Uaids in the corn pit are
not fashionable of late. May corn opened at
C6c , sold down to ( iSKc. back to DOc , down to
G5X < s , to 655fc , down to r,5' . , ' ( < ? .r > 5 c , up to
55XC , and closed at 1 o'clock at 55 > { o. Juno
corn opened at fi5c , sold at 55&c , then down
to 54c , and closed with that price bid at 1
o'clock.
There was only n dull speculative trade in
oats , with a decline In price in sympathy with
the easier corn market. May oats opened at
82c. sold at 32Kc , down to and closing at
31c. Juno oats opened at S'J c , sold down
to SlKc , and closed at 82e. July oats sold
down from 325 < fo to 32c , and August oats from
Provisions commanded > a fair general sup
port , but trading was featureless and devoid
of special activity. Yet there was no de
veloped inclination to bear prices , and the
fluctuations In the market wore confined to
comparatively narrow limits. Short ribs
were sold in n moderate way by foreign
houses , while in lard one or two well known
qhorts bought with a llttlo freedom. Pork
was slow , Products , as u rule , reacted a
trlilo from yesterday's advance and In short
ribs a decline was suffered of 5@ Xci n"d in
pork of 7 o. Lard was unchanged to 2J
easier.
AFTBKXOON SESSION Wheat lower. May
opened at SlXc , foil to 81 ? < c , up to 8181c ,
fell off , closing at 81&81Hc. Juno closed
nt 824c , July at 83&e , December at about
85) c. Corn broke sharply. May opened at
CTiXc , cased off and near the close fell to 54 %
( S55c , closing nt Mj c. June closed at Me.
July fell to 54Jtfc , with some sales just as the
bell rang at Wo. Oats easier. Pork was n
shade stronger , but quiet. May closed at
? 14.15@14.17X. " Juno at $14.22K , July at
I14.32U1. Lard averaged 2) ) < o higher , closing
at $8,00 for May , $8.05 bid for Juno , $8.10 for
" July and $3.13K for August. Short ribs wcro
n shade better , closing for May at $7.82J ,
$7.40 for June , $7.47 for July and $7.57 for
August.
