The jury in the case of Charles Norton charged with nn outrageous nssnultiipon little Minnie OMcr , n girl of only eight years of ngc , remained out twenty-four hours. About noon yesterday they agreed vpon n verdict , finding him guilty. The jury stood from flrst until item1 the Inst nine to three In favor of n verdict llmllnp him guilty of rape. As n compromise the verdict \vtis readied flnditiK him guilty of assault with Intent to commit rape , When the verdict was given , Norton , although quite swarthy , turned white , nnd It seemed for a momentns though ho would swoon. This was the llrst Indica tion of any feeling about the matter. The evidence wai very clear as It came from the lips of the Innocent little girl , and the theory of his Innocence could only bo sustained by the claim that this HUlo girl was repeating n story framed for her by her ciders. The of- fen so was n most aggravating one , and beastly In its nature. Major I.ynmn IH Willing. There have been numerous reports as to the candidacy of Major Lyman for le-nomln- nlion and re-election to congress. One of his friends , a prominent business man , recently wrote him a personal letter of inquiry , and in response received the following : HourfK OH HKmcsr.NTATivrs , U. S. , WASHINGTON , D. C. , March 27 , IbSS. lcar Sir : Your kind favor of the : Mth Inst. at hand , and I hasten to answer It in the same fair , frank spirit in which it was written. As ybu doubtless know , I have never been a candidate for the nomination. I accepted the nomination when it was llrst tendered me , very reluctantly , at the demand of the republican party , and for what then scorned its best interest. In doing so I saeriiiccd a soot upon the bench , a place entirely con genial to my taste , nnd in line with my life work and study. I have endeavored to faith fully represent the district , and have reason to think I have not been wholly unsuccessful. I shall not now enter into any unseemly con test for the nomination , but if the convention of the republican party of the district shall again name mo as its candidate , I shall grate fully accept , and continue to do the best I can. "What do you call that ? " asked II. U. Williams , the well known Glcnwood attor ney , ns he pulled out of n little bag a dark looking nugget. It was so dark and shiny that at flrbt glance It appeared to bo a piece of highly polished hard coal , but the first rny of light crossing the point of an angle showed the reddish tinge , which showed that it was far from being a piece of coal. It was n quartz , with well-formed faces and angles , and as it was passed from one to another of the group there was but one sentiment ex pressed "It looks like a ruby. " "That is what the Jewelers all say. They think it is a ruby , but I have not had itclosely tested. They have been trying the Jilo on it , but a file won't tottcli it. It's too hard. " The little nugget is certainly u curiosity , and in all probability n very valuable one. If it proves to bo what it seems it is worth more than the whole of the farm , In one cornerof which the 11 nd was made. Mr. Williams has iccently been mukmg some search over land owned by him in Mills county , his purpose being to discover , if possible , traces of coal or iron. In thus searching ho found this gem in the rock , and has been showing it to those familiar with such bits of rock , and with jewels , and all thus far express the opinion that it is a valuable gem , the worth of which cannot fully bo determined at present. It appears to bo a very line ruby indeed , raid is of wonderful size. It weighs \\y. \ ( \ pennyweights. If it be what it bccms Mr. Williams can congratulate himself on having found probably the largest ruby in the country. Ho is preparing to have it examined by experts , nnd when their Judgment is passed upon it , lie will determine what disposition ha will make of It. At present it is not for sale , although ho has several would-be purchasers Becking to get him to part with it. While the llnd of the supposed ruby IB of no Importance to Mr. Williams , his discover ies in oilier respects are of far more imiiort- ancn to the public , and possibly to hlmnelt , It will be remembered that some months ago there were found traces of coal in the edge of Mills county , about eight miles south of this city. On Mr. tipctmnn's ' land was found ono vein of what appeared to bo channel-coal , which burned very freely , nnd promised to be of still better quality and large quantities when developed. The vein was found to bo eighteen inches thick. Later it has been worked more , and n depth of twenty-six inches is now disclosed , with good prospects for the vein being thicker. Mr. Williams has land joining that on which thin llnd was made , and it was in looking for coal that he found the seeming ruby. Ho has found on his land outcroppings of the same kind of coal and there Is apparently n largo quantity. Ho has also found a quantity of iron , and from the prospecting already done it iipiwars that there is a stretch of about two miles which will richly repay working for botli real and iron. The iron found lias been assayed nnd Is reported as containing 53 per cent. cent. With With these additional proofs of the pres ence of coal and iron , arrangements will bo made to determine- an early date whether they are in sulllcicnt quantities to warrant working- , Siieafo loans money on real estate. Several switchmen as sembled at the police slut jpn nnd offered to put , up any amount of boml for Walker's ap pearance and finally effected his release.
