CHICAGO rnomicE MARKET.
CitiCAno , .April 17. [ Special Telegram
to the HEC.1 Slnco yesterday another bull
ish factor of immediate Influence hns come
into the wheat market , and Hint is the condi
tion of the German emperor. The crop scare
had alrcmly brought about a surprising ad
vance and a buying fnvcr was on and when
the expectation of the emperor's death was
added , the prlco of wheat advanced lo over
last night. There is but llttlo variety to crop
news , From those sections from which bad
reports have been coming they still coino and
are growing worse Instead of better. Yet
the wheat traders who thrco weeks ago paid
no attention to them may bo going to the op
posite extreme Just now. Trading In wheat
has grown Immensely wlthtn the past few
days. Interest never flagged to-day , and
trading was largo and general. Gudnhy ,
who has been a most persistent and obsti
nate bear for some years , wa-J
probably the heaviest buyer of wheat to-day ,
and the floor gossip Is that ho Is now long on
wheat There was plenty of realizing by the
longs about the opening , which sent prices
off about MC , but the demand was good , and
when the upward movement once set in the
covering by shorts sent the prices up again
1' c from the lowest point reached. Hero
tticro were moru longs wanting to realize
than shorts or Investors willing to buy , and
slowly Jtfc of the ndvanco was lost , the clos
ing being actually a trillo below the opening
prlco , though % o higher than yesterday's
close. May wheat opened at 82Vc. Just Ic
nbovo yesterday's close , worked down to
81J c , then gradually advanced , with fre
quent small reactions , until 82c was
reached , then fell to S2e , which was the prlco
at the 1 o'clock close. Juno wheat opened at
b2J c , sold down to S2' ' c , up to 83 0 , and
closed at 1 o'clock at 8'J @Sc. )
There was an excited and higher opening
In the corn market , which seemed to bo
largely in sympathy with the advance In
wheat , but this was followed by n sharp do-
cllno lo yesterday's ' closing price , and after n
small recovery the market became quite
tame , with light trading and no noticeable
feature , the attention of traders being largely
given to wheat , It was dull and rather
monotonous until the last hour , when some
buying , probably stimulated by the small es
timate of receipts for to-morrow , caused a
lively advance , ou which May corn touched
f > 7c , the highest price yet reached by that de
livery in this croi ) year. Ou December 5
May corn touched 5Qc , the highest price
heretofore reached. At the top prlco to-day
there was very little trading and presently
J c of the advance was lost. The receipts of
corn to-day were about as expected , but the
grading Is much better and this
was nn encouragement to the
1)cars. May corn opened at SOJjjC , whicl ) was
J c above yesterday's closing price , sold up
to 5C@WJ ) < o , then fell to 50'fjc ' , advanced to
57c , fellto ftOJ o , and closed at 50c , which
was the opening price. Juno corn opened at
fj&4/e , sold at 65c and 50c , and closed at 1
o'clock at Gft c.
Thcro was another active day in oats , with
n , strong , advancing market. May oats
opened at 33c , sold at 32 < g32 c , up to 33Mc ,
and closed at 1 o'clock at li33&c. ( Juno
onts opened at 32Xc , ranged from 32j ! o to
83 > .f < 233 ? c , closing at 33J < c. July outs
ranged from 3232 o to 33Vc , closing nt
83c. August oats ranged from 2Sc to 2'J c.
mid closed at 29o. September oats ranged
from 28 > tfo to 2SJ c.
Provisions continue to net independently
of grain. In to-day's market the feeling ,
influenced by advices from the stock yards ,
where hogs wcro plenty and lower , was
easier , yet the depression actually suffered
was comparatively email. Huscd on last
night's 11 nul prices , the decline in pork was
limited to ll12 ) c , in lard to 2 > ( < ? 5o , and in
short ribs to 7X@10c.
