LOVE'S MASQUERADE ,
on A SOCIITTV HCLLK'S KAiiMEinvooEii.
"Aunt Snrnh , I have an itlcn nnii 1
wnnt your help to carry it out , " said
Deb Husscll earnestly to Mrs. Briscom.
"I wnnt you to help mo win Gertrude
Stone. "
"Why , my ilcnr boy , " was the reply ,
"I did not know you hail seen her"said
the old laily wondcringly.
"Well , my acquaintance with her is
rather short , I confess. I only saw her
talking with you this morning. I heard
hur say that if she ever fell in love it
would bo with a farmer and that she
was tired of everything' connected with
city life. I am unfortunately from the
city , but I am going to transform my
self into a countryman and hire out as a
farm hand to Miss Stone. "
And ho unfolded his plnns for win
ning the young lady and had teen en
listed his Rood-imturud aunt on his
side.
side.Miss
Miss Stone was very much pleased
with her now hired hand , Ebon , as ho
called himself. Ho did not cat with a
knife , and his grammar was singularly
good for a farm hand.
She did not wonder , when ho drove
her homo ono night , that he should talk
a good deal , and ho was certainly very
respectful.
"You are fond of farm work and the
country i1" Miss stone was baying.
"Very , " Ebon rejoined , with much
enthusiasm ,
"You were brought up on a farm ? "
she added.
"Well " the hired
, no not entirely ,
man responded.
"But you chose farm-work because
you are fond of it , " said Miss Stone
warmly. "In that respect wo are ex
actly alike ; I love itl 1 suppose , " she
added gently , "that you were obliged
to elioo.se something ? "
"I yes , 1 support myself , " Ebon re
sponded , with his eyes on his com
panion's fair face.
"Itis is nothing to regret indeed it
is not ! " Miss Stone declared comfort
ingly. "I ndniiro anybody who is inde
pendent and ambitious ; they're the
only people I do admire. "
"Oh , that is very good in you , " the
hitvil man murmured , tucking the robe
more closely about , her.
"And I suppose you haven't hnd many
advantages ? " Miss Stone pursued with
feympatnotlc softness.
"Well , I've had some schooling , "
the hired man admitted.
"It isn't so great a loss , " said Miss
Stone earnestly. "Many of our best
and greatest men had very few educa
tional opportunities. " It sounded some
what trite when she hud said it , but the
hired man was looking at her with
wnrni gratitude. "Nothing is to be re
gretted but indolence and lack of prin
ciple ! "
.You arc very kind , " Ebon said in
softest tones.
Tee moon was just rising ; the daisies
in the Holds bbono white under it , and
the scent of the fresh crops filled the
air.
Certainly the hired man was not to be
blamed for driving past Miss Stono's
gate when they had reached It , with si
glance at his companion woich was the
perfection of respectful deference. All
that night she kept dreaming of this
nature's nobleman whom she had met ,
and bho thought of going over to Mrs ,
Briscomb's and tolling her what a won.
dcrful man lie was.
The next day she asked Ebon to drive
her over to his aunt's place. Fate must
have had something to do with the car
riage being upset and Gertrude falling
plump into his armsami then and there
ho told her how ho loved her , and was
promptly accepted. "Wo need only live
on the farm in faxunmcr , " said Kben
mysteriously.
"What shall wo do in winter ? " saiil
Miss Stone wondcringly.
"Well , I've thought of going into th <
newspaper business , " the hired man re >
joined lightly.
And she laughed in fond cnjoymcnto
the joke.
The remark occurred to her threi
days l.'iter. She went into the city to d (
n little shopping , and to break the nowi
of her engagement to her guardian.
She told herself vehemently that sh <
did not dread the process in the least
she was certain that it would not inaki
the slightest difference what anybody
said.
said.Still
Still she felt alittlo odd us she walkei
up the street from the station. Tin
Kgberts drove past in their liveried car
riage. The newly-married and excess
ively stylish Nicolls mot her smilingly
Lottie ilall and her rich young flaiicc
bowed to her from a dogcart.Voll
she didn't care what they said ; slu
would miirry Kbon though the wholi
world shoulu rise to oppose it.
It was the Daily Hcllcrtor buildinj
which put her in mind of Kbcn's joki
about the newspaper business.
The ullluont publisher stood on th <
stops , talking to a gentleman. IIo wa
an old friend of Miss Stone's , and h
hurried down to speak to her.
"In for borne shopping ? " ho said. "II
the way , we were just spanking of you
Mr , KUHHOU tolls mo lie has met you
M < - . Itussoll , hero's Miss Stone. "
Mr. Eussoll ramo down the btops , wit
his hat raised. lie was immaeulatel
urruyed in a pale summer suit , knottj
silver-mounted stick , a high hat an
polished shoes ,
IIo was in nowise different from th
dozens of young men passing at the me
munt , but Miba Stone stared at him , i
speechless , motionless bowildormoni
and Mr. Husscll stared back at her.
It WMH not till the publisher nad bowe
himself away that they spoke.
"F.ben ! " Miss Stone gasped.
"Gertrude ! " Mr. Huhsell rejoined.
Ho had recovered himself and wn
smiling down nt he r.
'I didn't know you wore comln
! "
to-day
"Who who arc you ? " Miss Ston
murmured faintly.
"Well , I'm the young parson you ar
going to marry , for one thing ! " the
young man responded emphaticallynnd
cd her into a. neighboring restaurant
before faying anything raoro.
"I couldn't help itl" ho declared
drcathlessly , over their untouched
cream , "I couldn't think of any other
way , and I was awfully gene on you
from the first minute. 1 was in the
porch that first afternoon , l heard what
you said , you know-all about frivolous ,
llippant-msndcd city men ; nnd I didn't
dare to appear in my proper character
I didn't truly. "
His voice s > hook with something be
sides feeling , and ho put his handker
chief to his lips.
Miss Stone smiled too , helplessly.
"And you haven't l > 6en doing farm
work ? " she said.
"Good graciousi I don't know a plow
from a reaper , " 13ob responded. " 1'vo '
been lying about in Aunt Sarah's front
yard when I haven't been with you. "
Miss Stone mused , pink nnd tremu
lous.
"Where did you cot the clothes ? " she
said.
said.Borrowed
Borrowed 'cm. I've bought them
now , though. I'm going to keep them
forever ! " "Sec , hero dear am 1 Jlip-
pant minded ? Uoyou wnnt to bake and
milk exclusively ? Aren't you rather
glad I am not a hired man ? "
Miss Stone looked at him with a help
less fondness.
"Well , since it is you ! " she confessed-
sweetly.
THE OLD AND NEW LOVE.
Hay Berry would have boon very
much troubled to explain why she jilted
Arthur Oxford and became engaged to
the elderly millionaire , Mr. MeDanScls.
It was not the money that attracted her ,
but she felt that she did not love Oxford
any more and told him BO frankly when
she returned his ring.
Oxford could not forget her , though
ho made inuny ineffectual efforts , and
ho became very indignant when his
friends attempted to commiserate him.
To show the public that ho had entirely
forgotten Ray's existence , ho took Nan-
nio Rawdon. a notorious little flirt , to
the great picnic where ho know Ray
and her elderly admirer were to go.
Everybody was curious to see what the
ono-timo lovers would do when they
met.
met.But
But these two , whoso hearts the people
ple were so anxious to see lacerated ,
wore used to the thing'now , and wore
too bright not to know they were on ex
hibition. Arthur came down the gang
plank with the tendcrcst solicitude for
Nannie's safety in his eyes , nnd when
Ray appeared she looked up into Mr.
McDaniel's face as though hot- life de
pended on what ho was saying.
Some people were disappointed ; nnd
then the dancing began , and the young
folks had their own affairs to think of ,
and the matrons were obliged to watch
their little Sallies , and Annies , and
Johnnies , who were always in mischief.
The little tug pulled briskly along the
river ; the barge , with its gay stream
ers and its music , followed in its wake.
At last they reached the spot whore
the picnic was to take place , and landed
as merry a crowd as ono could wish to
so see ; and oh , the pain that shot
through Ray's heart when she saw Ar
thur sitting on the grass beside Nannie !
So close , and with such a devoted air.
"Oh , Arthur , don't you remember
our last picnic ? " she thought.
"Riy : , I've asked you five times
whether you will have a sandwich , "
said Mr. McDnniels , in rather a testy
tone. " 1 hope , my dear , you arc not
getting deaf. "
"I'm sure I bog your pardon , " said
Ray , and grew suddenly very gay and
continued so till they started to return.
The day had been bright , but now as
the sun set behind deep banks of clouds
a mist was rising. Soon it enshrouded
the river like a white pall.
The little tug made mighty use of her
steam whistle every now and then.
Some stronger ono replied to her , or so
it seemed to the untutored cars of pas
sengers.
And now night had fallen nnd they
seemed to bo going blindly down the
river , and passing craft only revealing
themselves uy their blurred and magni-
licd lights.
U And now close to them ah , heaven ,
how close the deep throb of a tremendous
deus engine.
Very few know any more than that.
A sudden Hash of red nnd green above
their heads shrieks , oaths nnd n horrible
rible crash.
Ray , who had been leaning against
the railing , clung to it for an in stunt in
darkness.
"This is the end , " she thought her
self , "tho end of all. What does it mat-
tor. Life is not worth to much. Only
mother will feel it.
She clung n little tighter. Then she
) was flung into the river , but us she
, touched it someone clutched her. A
voice said in her ear :
| "If you do not struggle or catch hold
of me. I can save you. If not , wo wil ]
both drown. "
"I know , " she panted : and in her
soul she resolved that no act of hers
should bring destruction on the head ol
her preserver , whoever ho was.
It takes courage to bo saved when
ono cannot swim ; to keep quiet , and tc
keep one's mouth shut. But Ray wns
not a coward ; and bo in a little while
two people were dragged into a boal
the steamer had lot down , and Raj
looked into the face of the man nt hot
side and saw that it was Arthur Oxford ,
Ho was in his shirt-sleeves , for , on
the instant , he had cast elf both coal
and shoes ; and lie had hurt himself or
the forehead , and the blood tricklot
over his face a ghastly object , cer
tainly , but , oh , how beautiful to Ray.
"You saved mo ! " she whispered , ant"
clung to him.
"Yes , thank God ! " answered Arthur
