decrease of $83,635 in St. Paul earnings for
the first week In April tended to Increase the
offerings , but the stock was held up better
than expected nnd closed , ' point belter than
yesterday. Hock Island dropped IJf , with
light trading. Coalers wcro steadier but
gains wcro small , In fact the gains on the
the cntlro list wcro fractional , none reaching

to-day , Ihcro being over 100 fresh loads on
tale. The market was very dull and drag
ging ull day and only a little over half as
many cuttlo changed hands as on yester
day , The packers were very light buyers
und the unfavorable reports from eastern
markets kepi back ibe shippers and ipecii.
Utors. The mtrVct was fully lOo loner on
ftn ftvcrngc. The general quality of the cat
tle to-day was nothing extra nnd , while Ihcro
wcro some eood heavy cattle , the bulk was
light native steers.
Hog * .
There wcro only forty-nine f rwh loads hero
and the market was active at nn advance of
5@10c , The demand was good nnd every
thing on sale was picked up in short order.
The advance to-day fully makes up for the
break in prices last week.

through rates when such stock Is mixed with
Union Pacitlo stock.

of strikes , and the freight rates in the wes
have been put on a uniform basis , wo ougb

The receipts of butter to-day wcro again
jight and some houses had not n pound to
sell. Prices ore unchanged. Eggs were
moro plentiful but prices wcro steady , 14
cents being the highest prlco paid. Dressed
poultry Is about out of the market with llvo
chickens in fair demand at good prices.
Oysters nro about out of the market and the
quotation is dropped. Potatoes nro steady
with the demand increasing somewhat. In
fruits the tendency of the market is higher
