A meeting of the directors of the board of trade was held at ttioir rooms In the chamber of commerce , last night. The time was spent in reading bills and issuing vouchers , no business of any importance being trans- < acted. Considerable discussion was had con cerning the renting of the ofllccs in the building , but nothing definite decided upon. The board moots Monday evening at 7:30. : , A Drop of Ducats. Notification was yesterday received by Mr. Brown , one of the most trusted em ployes of S. P. Morse , the Farnam street dry goods man , that ho had fallen heir to $50,000 , an uncle of his having recently died in Scotland. Mr. Brown is well known in this city , and has for some time been identi fied with the dry goods business hero. His acquisition of wealth means the utilization of the amount acquired iu Omaha. Two More licenses. Two more saloonkeepers came Into the city treasurer's oflleo yesterday and paid the ? 7GO required , making the total number 21i. ! Thjprc nro remaining forty men who have not liquidated. A portiou of these will con test the law governing the case , while a number claim they arc unable to pay. It is claimed by those who nro in a position to know that but for the assistance of the brew ers of the city the number of these who have paid would irnvo been noticeably less , and that in several instances the greater portion of the ? TCO was advanced to the saloonkeepers ers by the brewers. Measuring the AValln. There was another meeting yesterday of the committees appointed to measure the iriatcrial and estimate the cost of the labor already , employed in the construction of the city hall basement. The committees mot in the city engineer's ofllco and afterwards in spected the work , and still later computed the value of the same. Thcro wore present Contractor Ed llrcnnan , who is represented by Contractor Coots , and Messrs. D , Sliano , Baker , superintendent of the work , and City Engineer Tillson , all three of whom appear for the city. These sessions have occupied nearly all of the days upon which they have been held , and it is thought that the meeting of to-day will bring the investi gation to a close. _ County Officers' Kenorts. The clerk of the board of county commls sioncrs yesterday received quarterly reports from the register of deeds , county Judge , treasurer , superintendent of instruction and county treasurer. The report of the register. of deeds Is a very volumnious document , and shows the total amount of cash received for the quarter ending March 31 to bo $ lr , > 79.U5. County Judge Shields reports a balance of tJSl.lU above expenditures , The superin tendent of publio instruction reports $ I'J ro- colvcd for examination fees , which , added to the amount on hand , shows n balance of ? 10S.2rt. The fees collected in the county treasurer's ofllco between Juno 0 and April t amount to 53,1115.1)3. ) Notes. "A mooting of the contracting carpenters was held yesterday in their room In the Paxton building , but there was little busi ness transacted. Ono of the brick manufac turers was present and asked one of the cnr- putitor association men what the journeymen expected to do. "Thoy won't do much , " said the man of planes. "In fact thcro isn't enough of them left to do much , They said they would de mand 05 cents per hour on the first of this month , but that's all I've hoard about it. 'Jfhoy are all working. If you had as little trouble from your blcklaycrs' union as wo Imvo from our carpenters' union , you'd be all right. " "How much do you pay them , now ! " asked the brick contractor , "From 23 to 30 cents par hour. " said the carpenter boss. "And our men won't work for loss than 50 cents per hour , " exclaimed the brick man , Fell With n Crash. Yesterday morning about 330 ; o'clock two sections of thereof of the Puxton store-house , in the rear of the hotel of that nmno , fell with1 a loud crush and startled seine of the guests as if the north wall of the Mur ray adjoining had fallen. The vault beneath was filled with empty boxes and barrels and when thcso were crushed beneath - neath the mass of mortar , brick , Iron , broken etono and granite , the sound might easily have been mistaken for that which aroused the slumbcrcrs. The pavement behind the hotel was noticed settling as early 09 0 o'clock in the evening , Jangcr lights were hung1 out and a barn * cudo was erected preventing teams and cm- tiloycs of the hotel from passim. over the fa uuger spot. The decision was by the house and in favor of the afllnnatlve , the governing Idea being that this country should not bo inndo the ccispool for the refuse of the old world. The question for the next debate will bo : Hcsolvcd , that the United States shouht own and operate all the Intcr-stato roads in this country. It is understood that thobrlckmouldcrsand setters have formed a co-operative society with a view of manufacturing brick , and the promoters of the cntcrprlso feel sanguine that they will bo able to compete with manu facturers already in the field. A meeting of the men was held last Tuesday night , and it is no secret that the subject was thoroughly discussed then and details entered into , Funds to tjio amount of $ .3,000 were sub scribed , and communications were read from several well known property holders , who agreed to furnish grounds for the purpose for one year. Other as equally substantial citizens came to the front and expressed nr willingness to take stock in the enterprise to the extent of $50,000. Thcso flattering promises Imbubcd the men with spirit and confidence , and the Ben was told by a promi nent member of the Brick moulders' asso ciation last , night that , steps towards n permanent formation will bo put under way nt once. Subscription books will bo opened in a few days , n slto selected and officers elected. They claim that the moulding of brick Is a lucrative one , and that with their organization and the promises of outside aid they cannot fall in making the proposed co operative association a success. Moro Trouble Growing Out of the Klcctlon Bulldozing. Henry Hall , the mayor of Florence , Is under arrest for assaulting Mr. Finkenkillcr , a fellow citbon , adding thereby another laurel to the brow of Florence ns a city of brawlers and bulldozers. Finkenkillcr went to the mayor to give him the subpoenas for Henry Shomer , the repeater now awaiting trial In tbo county Jail. The mayor seems particularly sensitive about the disgraceful scenes In Florence on election day , and when Finkenkillcr appeared with the legal papers for Shomer It Is said the mayor became very hiirly. When Finkcukiller politely informed Hall that ho would not bo brow-beaten even by the mayor of the great city of Florence , his excellency arose in his might and kicked and pounded his visitor until ho was out of breath. Finkenkillcr iudignnntlysoughtajus- tice's ofllco and swore out a warrant , which was served on the mayor yesterday. Ho will probably bo tried before Justice Anderson. Henry Shomer , the alleged rcpoater , was arraigned before Judge Anderson yesterday afternoon and had his trial fixed at I p. in. to-day.
