of railroad bconory in California , _ the

to explore the ruute , and they reported

his accounts. Mr. llanos did not ktiow
the man , but upon inquiry found that

bore , nnd claimed to have bought a suit
of clothes from Mr. Ilancs while but a
boy , nnd for which ho uovor paid. Mr.
llanos nad no account of the clothes ;
in fact , the debtor stated that the
clothes had been bought twonty-olght
years ago , nnd then it was remembered
that the books in which the accounts
had boon kept had been burned by
Sherman's army during the war , But
Mr. linn oa. remembered the transaction ,
but told the gentleman thathocduld not
now accept payment ; but the debtor wns
persistent , said that ho had cotno eomo

agreed to accept the principal , which
was paid , and to-day Uncle Josh is the
