Chicago papers are walling over a decrease
In the amount of hogs packed , as the follow
ing from the Tribune will show. Omaha
comes up smiling however , with on increase
of 117,000. As Chicago's decrease is .1C4,1S > 9 ,
it may bo Inferred that Omaha has gotten
the greater portion of their deficit. The
west is getting there , not very slowly cither ,
and next year Chicago's decrease will bo still
greater. The following is the Tribune's
story : "The winter packing season shows a
decrease over previous years. During the
winter season of 18S7-'b8 Chicago houses
killed nearly $1C > 00,000 hogs , against 1,734-
822 the season of 18SO-'S7. The actual num
ber packed was 1,440,410 , or 245,300 less than
the previous season. During the months of
November , December , January , and Feb
ruary , 1837-'SS. Chicago received 100,000
dressed nogs from western points which were
counted in Chicago's stocks , and that fact
makes the Chicago packing greater than it
appears , as the hogs mentioned are not
included in the live receipts of the Chicago
market. Receipts for the four months de
creased 269,041 , and the shipments of live
hogs docrcivsed 104,513 , while the shipments
of dressed hogs. Increased 71,000. The re
ceipts of hogs for the summer scasoQ of 1 7
decreased 707,4' . ' ; ) , making a decrease or 977-
064 for the summer and winter season. Shi | > -
Uients for both seasons decreased 074,207 ,
head.
Omaha comes to the front and still main
tains her position ns third In the rank of the
packing cities , as will bo seen by the follow
ing table. While Chicago and St. Louis
show u decrease Omaha shows an increase.
Verily tha packing center of the United
States in 1S90 is sure to bo located at the portals
tals of the west the Gate City. Stick a pin

SHERIDAN'S RIDE.
The General's Own Story of flic Poem
nnd How It Cnntc to Uo Written.
Much of Sheridan's reputation ,
says the Now York World , ns a
profanity expert nmy bo attributed to
Buchanan Read's poem describing
Sheridan's famous ride from Winches
ter to Cedar Creole. Sheridan , accord
ing to Head , rodp down the lines with tv
terrific oath , which was so soul inspiring
as to briiifj the demoralized soldiers
back to their senses and instil them with
now courage.
Sheridan was accompanied on that
ride to Cedar Creek by two btalTolllcers ,
Brigadier General George A. Forsythc
and Colonel O'Koefo. This is what
Sheridan said , according to General
Forsytho , when ho went up and met his
soldiers llccing from the enemy : "Hoys ,
those of you who are not cowards follow
me , for I'll sleep in that camp to-night
or I'll sleep in hell ! " The olfeet of
these words. General Forsytho says , was
magical. The boys turned with ii cheer
and followed Sheridan to a man.
A few years ago General Sheridan , in
conversation about the origin of Mr.
Head's poem nnd how it came to bo
written , said that the idea was first
suggested by James E. Murdock , the
elocutionist and actor , of Cincinnati.
Mr. Murdock was around Sheridan's
headquarters alter the battle of Mis
sionary Ridge. He was there to bring
back the body of his son , who had been
killed in action. There was some delay
in getting the body , as the enemy occu
pied the ground where his t-on fell. Mr.
Read was also at Sheridan's headquar
ters frequently. The general said :
"On Sundays ho ( Murdock ) always used
to recite poems around headquarters ,
and there was one of Browning's that
the boys never missed a chance to call
for. It was a prout favorite with mo ,
don't know , just as it was with the sol
diers , and we never let the old man off
without his reading it. It was the
story of the ride from Ghent to Aix.
"Well , " you see , after the battle of
Cedar creek , there was published in
Harper's Weekly n story of my ride
from Winchester , and a picture of mo
on the back of old Rionzi. Murdock
had agreed to recite a poem at the san
itary fiiir that was being held nt Cin
cinnati at that time , and Read had
promised to write something appropriate
for him. But when MurUock called on
him for the manuscript , the artcrnoon
ho was to recite , ho hadn't touched n
pen to paper said ho didn't know what
to write about. Well , Muvdock hud
just seen a man who was in the battle ,
and was full of the story , being a friend
of mine , you see ; so ho pulled the copy
of Harper's Weekly from bis pocket and
repeated to Read all that the officer had
told him. Read jumped up and locked
himself in his room , wrote the poem olT-
hand in an hour , and got his wife to
make a copy and hand it over to Mur
dock before dark. The latter was delighted -
lighted with it , and read it at the sani
tary fair that night. "
"When did you lirs see it ? "
"The first I saw of it was in the news
papers. One of my oflicors brought it to
my tent one morning in the camp down
in the Shenandoah valley. "
BART'S BOODLE.
A Noted Stage llobber Supposed to
Have Due Up Hit , Hurled Plunder.
St. Louis Globe-Democrat : A special
from Hcraldsburg , Cal. , gives a curious
story of the unearthing of buried treas
ure near that place. A few evenings
ago two men in a wagon camped on the
McPherson ranch , four miles from Hor-
aldbburg. Thoytold Mr. Morrison , who
lives on the ranch , they were too poor
to go to a hotel. Next morning Mr.
Johnson , who resides on the river bank ,
a short distance cast , in crossing the
point to the Morrison place , found
where the ground had recently boon ex
cavated. A search proved that the
mysterious men seen by Morrison the
evening before had done the digging.
An examination of the ground by a re
porter showed that tin oak 45 feet east
of the hole had been blasted years
ago. Also a ledge of rock lay the same
distance to the west , nnd a ridge of rock
along which the excavated hole was lo
cated led down in a direct line toward
the Geyser Peak. Several small places
showed whore the shovel had been used
to strike the plant which the men had
evidently boon seeking. The earth
having been turned up an old , rusty ,
broken shovel , minus the handle , lay
on the small pile of dirt. This had been
buried with the treasure to us&tst the
finder.
The bottom of the hole , which was
about two feet deep nnd the same in di
ameter , showed that some object had
been removed. Most of the residents
believe Black Bart , the famous stage
robber recently released from San Quin-
tin after serving seven years , was one
gf the men who dug up the hoard , and
that the treasure was the proceeds of
several stage robberies which Bart com
mitted hero. lie is known to have se
cured several thousand dollars at the
time , nnd , although closely pursued , ho
managed to escape capture , The other
theory is that the digging was/lone by
half-breed Indians , who mnfdercd a
man on this spot thirty-live years ago.
Ho had $2,000 on his person , and , though
liis body was found , no trace was ever
discovered of the coin.
