Prices on th former were higher ; on hogs about stead with no sheep sold all the offerings belli hipped to Chicago. ( Cattle. The total receipts were * 034 head of fa quality. The market on all grades was , i the-estimation of some salesmen , about11 rents higher while others claimed it wi about steady. The highest price paid durin the day was 4.15 for a lot of 1203-lb steer with other grades in proportion. Hog . - The receipts of hogs were 1,164 head. Th market was about steady on all grades , wit a limited demand on account of a shortage I receipts. Local packers took all the offe Ings. Sheep. The following sketch of his career , taken from the San Antonio Express , will ho rcatl with interest by the many friends of the deceased in this vicinity : "Tho deeca&cd gentleman had boon in &an Antonio but a whorl time , whither ho had como to puts the cold season , hoping that the uliuiato would allay a malady which was only acceler ated by the rigor of a northern winter in Wyoming territory , where ho was stationed in command of the Seven teenth infantry with headquarters tit Fort D. A. Uussoll. The death of Qol- onol Chambers will create great regret , not alone in army Hirclusbut in civilian nl o. No officer could bo moro ondcarod to his bubovdinates or moro loved by his follow officers. Ho was chivalrous to a degree , of dauntless bravery and gener ; ous sympathies , possessing rare social , attributes that inudo him universally popular , and 'vns a soldier and a man in full sense of the phrat-o. Colonel Chambers was born in New , York in ISoIi , and entered the United ; States military academy at West Point Julyl , 1849graudxmting on .Tuly 1 , 1858. On'the same date ho was promoted in the army to brevet second lieutenant of infantry , and alter serving a short time in garrison at Fort Columbus , Now ; York , ho did frontier duty and bcout- ing nt Fort Columbus , Now York , ho did frontier duty and bcouting at Fort Mclntosh , Tex. Ho received his com mission as second lieutenant of the ; Fifth infantry on March 3 , 1&3.-J. Ho then escorted Captain Pope's artesian well expedition in Now Mexico , and was engaged in a skirmish near the mouth , of Delaware crook , Now Mexico. A brief time after ho was in the Florida hostilities against the Somiolo Indians. In 18')7 ho was appointed adjutant of the Fifth infantry and did frontier duty on the Utah expedition. In 185'J ho ho was promoted to the first lieutenancy of his company , and during the two .years that followed ho was in the inarch to Now Mexico and on the Navajo expedition , also borving during the re : bollion of the seceding states on muster ing duty in Iowa. Tennessee , and Missisbippi. On May lo.lSltlho\\asmado civpUun of the Eighteenth infantry and did actiyo service in the battloof Shiloh , ; where ho .was twice wounded. Ho was alee in the advance upon and siege of Corii\th. For his gallant and meritori ous bcrvico at the battle of Shiloh ho received the brevet rank of major. Dur ing September , 18012 , ho was in the | roconnoisancc from Burnsville , Miss. , to Jnka , Miss. , and in the battle of Juka ho was severely wounded. In that battle tlo ho again distinguished himself , his guerdon being the brevet rank of lieu tenant colonel. Ho was in the Vicks- liurp campaign , and at the siege of Vicksburg was promoted to to a brevet colonel for his gallantry. Ho was next in the reoccupation of Jackson and afterwards - torwards in command of brigade in garrison risen at Vicksburg. From August , 1803 , to April , 1805 ho was a brigadier- general of the United States volunteers , and from that period until the close of the war ho was actively employed nnd was part of the time judge advocate of the district of Nebraska and the depart ment of the Platte , being brovettod brigadier general for his services at the battle of Champion Hills , and Meridian , Miss. Ho was transferred to the Twen ty-seventh infantry September 21 , 1800 , and made major of the Twenty-second infantry March 5,1870. In 1809 he was transferred to the Tenth infantry. On October 22,1870 , ho was promoted to the lieutenant colonelcy of the Twety-lirst infantry ; in 1877 ho was military at- tacho to the United States legation at tacho at ConsUininople , and in 1880 re ceived a colonel's commission in com mand of Seventeenth infantry , which ho hold up to the time of his death. In 1877 , Colonel Chambers was sent by the United States government to observe the movements of the Turkish troops in the Turcoo-Rutfsian war , and was pres ; ent at the famous engagement at Shipka Pass , in Septemcer of that year. ; In 1870 , the deceased gentleman , then ru major Fourth United States infantry , was at Fort Fotterman and accompanied ) . the expedition under General Crook against the Sioux Indians , in command of the infantry battalion on that expe dition. Ho was present and took part in the engagement with the Indians in the "Rosebod , " where the command 00 was attacked , and was afterward com 00 00 mended by General Crook , in his report 00U ) of the expedition , for his gallantry and 00 efficiency and the assistance he ren JM dered in preserving the command from destruction against the overwhelming 50 force of the enemy.
