Al lison , in his buckskin clothes mid his old whito. lee rim hut , is one of the most interesting mon I over mot. I usually llnd that the mon who Imvo made national reputations by tholr ex ploits on the plains and among tno In dians dwindle and shrivel and become stupidly uninteresting when one cotnos near enough to them to see what they reully are. But this is not true of Mr. Allison. The more one socs of him the more interesting one becomes in him. It was hovho , single handed , brought about the surrender of Sitting Hull after the massacre of General Custor and his troops , and the btory of this ex- iloit gave Mr. Allison a national fame ; jut , after'all. . that was only one of his jxploits and by no means the most in- crehting of them. I wish everybody in this land every body whoso head has boon llllod with 'also pictures of Indian fighting and of .ifo on the great American plains I ivish every sueh boy could heap Mr. Al ison talk for an hour. Ho is far more ntertaining than the dlmo novelist , md , what is better , ho makes true pio- uros , which , while they entertain , arc ull of goqd moaning and profit to those ivho hoar them. Ho is an ideal ' 'Indian fighter , " but is very far from that par ticular and false ideal set up by the jheap penny-a-lincrs who novpr saw a plain or an Indian , but who write miser ble stuff about them both by the tnilo. It is a gentleman who inhaUits those buckskin elothes of Edward H. Allison an intelligent , a hearty , a true gontlc- nan and a scholar. Mr. Allison was born in Michigan in 1817 , and spent the first li f teen years of his life on his father's farm. Then , though yet so young , ho passed the ox- uniiiation , standing as high 1)9 ) , and was matriculated at Ann Arbor university. Soon after this ho enlisted for the war , out of which ho came after thrco years , iit the ago of nineteen , fitted , as the army is likely to lit one of his years , for something more active and exciting than the old farm life in Michigan. In 180U ho accordingly went west and be came a gavornment-disputoh bearer. Ever fainco that time he has lived upon the plains , suffered its hardships. learned its lessons , and now ho hoscoino out , after twenty-two years of it. an in telligent gentleman with a broad untler- Rtanding not only of Indians , their lan guages , and their characteristics , but of "tho Indian question" in all its phases , from that viewed by the states man to that imagined by the ambitious youngster who sticks his mother's bread- Knife in his bolt and starts to extermin ate the race of red men. Mr. Allison has not merely learned the Sioux language ; ho has mastered it. Ho speaks a dozen or more Hugos , or dialects , but ho says the Sioux is the language of the American Indian , and that of the 800,000 in all the country the Sioux nation comprises one-sixth. ' There is , " said ho , "only one language that is employed by all our western Indians. It is the sign language. " Then Mr. Allison gave mo an example of this "tongue : " An Indian is hungry ! Ho motions with one hand towards his open mouth , as if he were throwing food into it , and then makes a negative ges ture away from his mouth. The trans lation literally is : "I have eaten not. " Of course if ho has not eaten ho is hungry. If ho is very hungry the gesture toward his mouth is greater in extent that is , ho motions toward his mouth and continues the gesture clear along down to his stomach ho is empty all the way down , so to speak. Now ho wants to say he has looked for game ! This is said by pointing his two Hrst lingers away from his eyes , the back of his hand being in front of his nose. If ho wants to say he had to look long for the game ho points in several direc tions and for some time with these "fingor-eyes. " To toll of mounting his pony and riding away ho straddles two * lingers of one hand over the forefinger of the other , and makes a galloping motion with the hands. To say that ho levels his gun at the game ho holds his arms as if holding u gun. Slapping ono palm upon the other means that holirod the gun , and slapping the back of one hand on the palm of the other means that ho brought down the gamo. If ho missed the mark he makes the same gesture , but adds the negative flourish to it he "brought down the game not. " So he goes through everything ho has to say , and Mr. Allison tells mo that every Indian in the west knows this language perfectly. Mr. Allison hold the position of dis patch bearer for some time and then became a mail carrier , riding on horse back and taking the mails on a pack mule from old Fort Rico , in Dakota , for hundreds of miles in all directions , through a country swarming with hos tile Indians. JEo always had with him an escort of Indians friendly to him , but. they had many battles with the hostiles during the three years ho con tinued in this service. "It was hard to go more than three hundred yards out side the fort palisade , " said ho , "with out having an arrow shot at you. " "By the way , " ho continued , " ! should like to saya word for the Indians who wore especially friendly in these days , such as Cold Hand , Goose , Good Tone Metal , Butcher ( or 'Cut-'Efn-Up , ' as some called him , because ho carved his enemies to pieces ) . These Indians and some others were friendly to the govern ment through thick and thin , and were wounded in many desperate battles they had for the government's sake. I think they deserve to bo pensioned. But it has always so happened that the gov ernment has done the most for the hos tile Indians , while the friendly ones have been leit to look out for them selves. " . In 1872 Mr. Allison was in Charles Mix county , in southern Dakota , where ho had embarked in business for him self , and where ho was chairman of the llrst elected county board. Ho speaks vary bittorlv of the treatment ho and the other pioneers of that county re ceived at the hands of the administra tion at Washington. Just before the county was disorgan ized Mr. Allison was'o looted to represent it 1n the Dakota legislature , but ho never did so. Ho had his certificate ol election , but he had no county to repre sent. , f > c j n "i OMAHAJOBBEBS'DIBBCTOBY ' Agricultural Implements.
