WHO HAS THE JEWELS ?
Humor That Marie Antoinette's Emer
alds Are in Washington. .
Now York Graphic : A Gorman news
paper contains the interesting informa
tion that the czar presented the czarina
on her fortieth birthday , November 26 ,
last year , a necklace of forty magnifl-
cent emeralds. The purchase of these
forty gems had been kept a profound
secret while the czar's agents for the
nine months preceding the presentation
wore engaged in collecting thorn. For
the sake of the brilliant woman who re
ceived so imperial a present , it is to bo
hoped that she will not recall the sad
auguries that have been historically
furnished in the connection of emeralds
and ill-fated women who were sovereigns
eigns also.
One of Dumas' great stories is
founded on the emerald necklace pre
sented to Marie Antoinette , about the
disappearance of which so much of romance -
manco and suffering was woven in the
terrible days that saw her die upon the
scaffold. The mention of emeralds and
Marie Antoinette'recalls ' a strange story
told the Graphic some time sincewhich ,
as it relates to emeralds , and some , too ,
reputed to be of' marvelous size and
purity , will bear telling in typo.
In the northwest quarter of Washing
ton , and on the upper edge of the most
fashionable section , < there stands an old-
fashioned three-story house , built about
fifty years ago. Except that it is old-
fashioned and seedy , there is only one
thing to call attention to it , besides its
being the home of a reduced yet well
known Virginia family. The ono thing
is the /act that a'"back ' window on the
second floor is always closed tight with
a heavy pair of outside iron shutters , in
the top of which there are two small
light holes.
A southern gentleman living on his
.wits faomowhat , though not in a disrep
utable Bonso , told the inchlcnts herein
narrated. He know .the Virginians ,
who are still possessors of a small prop
erty and among the family a couple ol
government appointments. Ho was
aware that tee re was a room in the
dwollinp which was never opened , sc
far as visitors knew. The door therotc
was heavily molded , aud evidently had
a strong lock on it.
In the course of a friendly conversa
tion ho mentioned a visit made to the
Chinese embassy ( not the present one ) ,
In the course thereof his host , ono of the
accomplished attaches , who spoke Eng'
lish perfectly , led him to his private sit
ting-room. The conversation accident
ally turned on gems , on which'subjeci
the Chinese diplomato proved himhol :
an adopt. Ho showed his visitor a large
number of rare jewels , diamonds , ant
other stones , ' some of them of a mos
: ostly character. Ho was a gem colloc-
or , nnd. being very rich , could readily
ratify his most extravagant wishes.
Us visitors remembered afterward that
is ho told the Incident .quick glances
lassed between members of the family.
V few days passed by uiul ho was
valted upon ut the olllco by ono of
ho male members , who asked , uftcr ex-
icting a pledge of secrecy , if ho could
> rlng the Chinese attache to the house
vlth the iron-shuttered window in order
o examine some very rare and valuable
oweln.
Of course this wits done. Both gcn-
lomen , American and Chinese , wont on
heir call in quite a Hurry of excite
ment. The hour sot was late in the
evening. They wore met at the door
> y the two gentlemen of the family ,
sono of the ladles were present , nor
heir ono servant either. After removal
of hats and coats the callers were asked
o go up stairs. They were taken to the
strong room , as it turned out to bo. The
door when they entered was observed
.o . bo heavily lined with steel plates. Its
ock was a combination one. A light
was burning within. The iron shutters
wore closed , ns usual. There was noth-
ng in the room but an iron stuiidboltcd
: othe floor , supporting a small iron sufo.
The door was closed behind thorn. On
-ho stand lav two cocked revolvers. The
visitors were asked to stand near the
door. Both were men of nerve , and ono
had been a dishing cavalry olllcor and
was scarred with a score of wounds.
But they confessed afterward that
.lirills of apprehension ran through
, hom. Ono of the brothers opened the
safe , and the other stood where his
hands would readily grasp the revel
vers. A few seconds and there appeared
a jewel-box , from which a small parcel ,
carefully wrapped in soft leather and
cotton , was as carefully removed.
Opening this there wore exhibited to
the astonished eyes of the callers sev
eral largo emeralds , nnd evidently of
? reat purity. The Chinaman trem
bled with excitement. Ho declared as
the largest one , as big at least ns a
Bfood-sizcd pigeon's egg , was placed in
Ills hand , that ho had never seen any
thing like it , while tolling , also , of
wonderful gems that ho know of in
China. The emeralds wore cut in an
antique style. There were a dozen of
them , anil all romarl < ubloi for their
beauty and size. The Chinaman was
allowed to examine them all carefully.
Ho did so with the utmost minuteness
and delight. All the time the closest
watch was kept , and the brothers , as
well as the visitors , seomcd to fool re
lieved when they wore all outside the
door and going down the stair-case.
And this was the story of their pos
session of such wonderful jewels told
then and afterward.by the Virginians :
Their paternal grcat-grundfather was a
military surgeon. Just ns the French
revolution was beginning ho was in
Puns , greatly interested , too , in all tho.
stirring events of the poriod. Ho hud
apartments in the house of a physician
who had some court practice and yet
wus secretly a radical. He was involved
heavily us a'gambler at ono time , und
borrowed money to a considerable
umount from his American friend.
When the revolution became violent the
Frenchman came under suspicion on
both sides. One day ho brought to the
Virginian , then about to return to
America , u small jewel box and showed
the emeralds which had been exhibited
to the visitors. Ho insisted upon his
crbditor taking them to America , where
ho promised to come also. Suflico it to
say they were brought to the Virginian's
homo. The French physician was never
heard of afterwards. The possessor of
the emeralds hold n transfer memoran
dum for them , and his family had hold
thorn in possession over since. They
became both a fascination and a terror
in the family , which had apparently
gone down the hill of well-doing in
guarding a great fortune they were un
able or afraid to utilize.
Tno Chinese gentleman was eager to
buy. DilHculties arose at once. The
possessors were unwilling to trust an
export with their secret , or to carry the
gems out of their abiding place. The
attache desired to have expert testimony
as to value and purity before ho expended -
ponded a princely fortune. Some in
quiries wore cautiou&ly mndo as to the
the history of the remarkable emeralds.
All known gems of that class were lo
cated except those of the unfortunate
queen of France , whoso necklace had
apparently disappeared absolutely from
the face of the earth. The Chinese gen
tleman was recalled homo or sent some
where else shortly afterward. Ho did
not buy.
That much and no more the Graphic
knows. So far ns it is aware , the mar
velous gems are still in Washington.
