CHICAGO , Jan. 23. [ Special Telegram to
the line. | A dull and local wheat market
was tukcn advantage of by the short sellers
this morning to drive prices down a little
further , and they inut with no considerable
resistance. The scalpers had apparently on
Saturday overestimated the effect of the de
crease in the visible supply and had prepared
themselves with some grain to reap a profit
from an unexpected advance. At any rate
they had wheat to sell this morning and no
body wanted It at Saturday's prices. Ac
cordingly May wheat opened to-day at 8'iJ < c ,
which was % c under Saturday's closing
prices. During the early trading the price
advanced to S-'lo , and then the sagging prices
begun and continued with some small reac
tions to the close of the morning session ,
when May wheat stood at 82 c , the extreme
low point. Several times H ! ! @lKi % was
touched , hut each time It seemed that thcro
was plenty of grain wanted at about that
price and there was u reaction , but this crit
ical point was passed Just at the close of the
Hcssion. A decrease In the visible supply of
wheat of K8'J.X.H ( ) bushels was Just about as
was expected. The statement appeared to
have no effect cither way.
The price of corn had climbed up a little
last week and therefore had further to drop
than wheat on the break this morning , and It
did drop. May corn opened at Ktjfe and
made no halt of consequence until It reached
Kc ! , which was shortly before the close of
the morning besslon , standing at KUgKiKc at
1 o'clock. February corn fell from 4Xc to
lyc and closed at 1 o'clock at 4Sa bid.
The speculative oats market sympathized
with wheat and corn , and without any very
heavy trading May oats , in which was about
all the trading , declined } e. That delivery
opened at y.'lo and gradually fell to 83'gi- ' ,
which was the price at the I o'clock closo.
In provisions the tendency was somewhat
bearish. Trade opened strong , but before
operators had time to study the situation and
form an opinion as to the probable course of
values the market assumed an easier con
dition. The old bear party gave early
evidence of ( wssessing vitality and proceeded
to depress the speculative lines by a ham
mering crusade In pork , which was crowded
down 40o from the highest point and made to
close IHl e lower than on Saturday. Lard

OMAHA IjlVE STOCK.
Cnttle.
Monday , Jan. 23 , 18SS.
The receipts of cattle were light and the
market quiet. The quality of the stock re
ceived averaged with the receipts of some
time past , ono bunch of seventeen natives
weighing 1,223 Ibs. each , selling for $4.25 , the
liighest price paid to-day. Forty-eight steers
averaging 1,431 Ibs. of not as good quality
sold for $4.00. The offerings of butchers'
stock wcro light and hut little trading was
done , Local buyers took nearly all the receipts -
coipts In this line. In all probability the
cattle market will improve from this time
forward although the change may not bo n
radical ono and some time may elapse before
the best figures are reached. Heavy re
ceipts in Chicago 1ms a tendency to keep
prices down ut present , und this is due
chielly to the fact that the majority of feed
ers are shipping their stock in preference to
feeding 40 cent corn. Those who are hold
ing back are doing so In anticipation of u rise
in the market and will doubtless ho re
warded for their action. Even now with the
market in its present condition , prime fat
stock is selling well on the market , n num
ber of head selling last week for M 50 , anil
without doubt the sumo class of cattle wouU !
sell at these figures to-day.
The receipts were light nnd of verj
ordinary quality although there wcro soini
very good hogs among the offoi ings. The
markets opened strong and remained nenrlj
steady during the day closing easy. Oiu

$3.45 the highest price paid. Light hogs niu
pigs are slow and have been for homo time
In order to obtain a decent price on tin
former they must bo of first-class quality.
The receipts this week will doubtless be
greatly in excess of those of last should the
weather continue to improve.
