talk was only about the attitude of thu heavy
operators , the wheat movement and foreign
markets.
There was good speculative trading in corn
nrid soiiio advance In prices was established
by the morning business. May corn opened

gradually declined to 62 ; ! ' , e , but at the de
cline there was good buying , which looked to
the crowd if it was for Investment by
ntsong parties , and this had its Influence-
local traders , causing a rapid improvement.

then there was o reaction to KiJ u , and
an advance to fill ' 4 ( 53 Vr , wh It'll was the 1
o'clock closing price. February corn opened

that delivery at the 1 o'clock close.

In the provision trade there were no exciting -
ing developments. On the contrary , the day
parsed in a comparatively tame manner ,
though thu feeling was nervous and operators

the actual situation and intentions of the old
bear element. Trading , which was largely
of a scalping character , Vt'iis wanting in spirit
and freedom , and was , in , i great measure ,
featureless. The I o'clock closing was a shadu

bulls who have predicted a January boom are
beginning to think that it has been side
tracked somewhere on ono of thb various
lines of railroads leading to this metropolis.
Thu bulls are without u leader and a majority
are demoralized by the general apathy that
lias characterized the market since the first
of the year. The break yesterday set them
nil to thinking and asking what was the
matter , but to their Inquiries the only an
swer was that thu grand army of commission
payers the public are not in ] the market.
Modcratolincs of long stocks came out us u
result of the continued decline in Missouri
I'acillc , which , up to 1 o'clock , had dropped
2j > B points. The bears were also free sellers ,
Cammack , Uutcmun & Jones being their
lenders. London bought St. Paul , Reading ,
and Union Pacific. The two llrst named
stocks held steady , but the latter was heavy
and dropped } per cent. Heading was ex-
| H'cled to break badly , but after declining )
per cent from the opening figures rallied 1 *
per cent and toward the close was the main-
may of the market. The market became
Irregular in the last hour , the Ciould' stocks
remaining heavy , but others rallied slightly ,
duo to tha covering by shorts. Manhattan
dropped to 88 , but rallied to S9 . The decline -
cline wad attributed to the new mortgage
recently put on it. At the close it showed a
net decline of 2'tf and Missouri Pacific 1

The receits ( of cattle were KI7 head , and
was principally common stock , thorp being
no prime stock offered. There was "a num
ber of half fed steers sold , and ft few head of
butchers' stock at prices a shade lower , the
market having eased off in sympathy will
eastern markets. The highest prices paid to
day was $4.00 , with the exception of a bund
which sold at private terms for u better lig
ure.
Hoc * .
The receipts of hogs to-day were 3,40 ]
head , which together with 213 head which
were held over from Thursday , swelled the
offerings to 3,014 head. The average mialit )
of the hogs offered was fair and prices are a
shade higher than on Thursday , $5.27 } belli } ,
paid for one load of good hogs , while three
others sold for $5.25. Ono load of choice
Herkshirn hogs was sold for $5.40 , but this is
outside the regular busjness and cannot bu
regarded as a quotation. Nearly everything
was taken. .
Sheep.
There was nothing doing on the market.
Prices remain as usual. Ono bunch of prime
fat sheep sold very late on Thursday ul
$4,00. They averaged l 7 iwunds.
