[ Special Telegram to the HKK. ] The wheat market offers very little material for the commentator. It is u speculative deadlock , with the bulls waiting nnd praying for some favorable outside cir cumstance to offer its aid , and the bears wait ing for the burden of i-arrying charges to break the backs of their adversaries. Mai- wheat opened nt 84VJe and closed Just thcro nt 1 o'clock. In the meantime that delivery fluctuated between 83Jfc. and 84 < < © S4Kc. The lowest , point was reached early in the ficsslon , when there npi > eiired to bo a consid erable number of selling orders on the floor , and scalpers who had gone homo long of wheat last night attempted to un load all together. There was but llttlo done , however , under 83J < e nnd but one "flvo" was sold at 83 > fe. There was believed to bo homo selling early for St. Louis account nnd some for New York , but most of the trading was by local people , and they are thought to bo somewhat bulllshly Inclined. Hutchlnson was buying moderately and this was , perhaps , the strongest of the Influences which advanced the price of the May delivery to 84,1 084 e shortly bo/ore the 1 o'clock close , which was at 84 , ! < c. The speculative corn market is about as dull and uninteresting as It possibly could be. Trading for outside speculators is insignlll runt and homo traders seem to care very llttlo about It. A range offtc covered the fluctua tions to-day. Hellevers In higher prices do not understand why prices remain stationary in view of the short crop and light receipts and the fact that from ail around tm report H come of corn being wanted for homo con- mirnption at better prices than are obtainable nt the centers of accumulation. Yet , in view ol these same circumstances , it Is equallj mysterious thatthovisiblosupplyof the grain hhould Increase. May corn opened this morning at 54JiJeand during the early trading sold down to 63) { ( 53c , late in the session advanced U 64V'i54 } < c , nnd closed at 1 o'clock at 540) 54Kc. In provisions the day's business was slow nnd featureless. The bears , encouraged by the increased marketing of hogs , were per haps a little more iiggrc.ssivo than the bulls , but they wcro nevertheless conservative , and made no continued effort to depress values. It was something of an "off day" all around , and from the start trading made u poor Bhowinp. Still the feeling was easier , and , based on last night's closings , pork suffered n decline of 15e , lard of 2 > .i05eI and short ribs of 7JiiilOc. ( AKTIIIt.VOON HKSSIO.V. A break of ( Xo ) in pork 0:1 : the afternoon board brought on a selling fever all around and wheat and corn both declined about ' . c very swiftly , with only a slight reaction at the close of the afternoon session. [ Special Telegram to the HKE.I CATTI.K The sudden develop ment of 12IKX ! ) to 13,000 over the run of last week was a genuine surprise to all concerned , and had a damaging effect on the ordinary run of cattle. Added to the run there wcro as many good and useful natives among the arrivals its on any day this weelf. Cattle came from all sections Illinois , Iowa , Missouri and Wisconsin the latter con tributing a largo share of the plain and com mon stock. There was also quite a showing of Texans and half-breeds. The long-horns allow the effect of their long , cold rldo In their famished and humpcd-up appearance. Nice native butchers' stock , line cows and heifers , such as dressed beef dealers and lirst-oluss butchers could use for their shop trade , were selling equally as good as yester day , but everything In the butcher stock Him , below the class named above , sold slow and weak from the start to the finish. Tuesday , Jan. 17 , 1SS3. The receipts of cattle wcro liberal and the quality of the offerings much better than they have been for some time. The market was quite active , the local and shipping de mand being quite good. Notwithstanding reports from other markets , which indicated a decline in prices , the market hero was quite strong and one bunch of peed natives sold at $4.50. Prices eased off a little at the close. The receipts of hogs were light and the quality of the offerings only fair. The mar ket opened about steady and closed r > ( u lUc lower. Good heavy hogs sold at $5.45. The local demand was only fair owing to the light receipts. The number received to-morrow will doubtless bo greatly in excels of those ol to-day. 1 Sheep.
