tHE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; MONDAY , JANUARY 10. .1888. A STRANGE 'SUEEP ; . . ' , The Deathlike Trance or 'I.nurti AVcb- ' tr Ten Weeks In lied , San Kranctfico Ohronlclo ! Tfio' 0110 house in the block that would not im press 11 rcj > orter with tlio Itleii tlmt thuro is a mystery within , is that at lli ! ! Eddy Direct. In < i bed In the front parlor , however , is n young lady , Miss Laura Wubstcr , wlio had lain there , accrediting tlio Htntomonts of her half-sister , for ten weeks. Mihs Atlanta Webster fcaid it was ft case of catalepsy. "Poor Laura has not moved from that bed , " she said , "excepting when I carry her to the armchair , for many weeks. Dr. Perry , her physician , lias been in attendance upon her , and ho in Mitislicd that she will eventually recover. " Miss Laura Webster is twenty-five years old. Lsust October' she returned from the country. Shortly after her re turn she became hysterical uiul atllicted with nervous prostration. She com plained of nothing more than lassitude. Finally she took to her bed , and when , the next morning , an elTort was made to awaken her she was found to bo uncon scious. Tno heat of her body and her regular , though faint respiration , indi cated that she was still alive , but her pallid features and rigidity suggested death. 'One day the doctor stuck a needle into her arm and she moved away and cried 'Ouch ! ' She can loll what food she wants when I suggest dishes to her and is very fond of pic mid cake. One day I was cooking something and the odor penetrated the bedroom. When I asked her what she wanted to cat she chose the very dish 1 had just cooked , " eaid her sister. "During the first few weeks of her illness , " snid Miss Atlanta , "she ro- fuped all nourishment. She became quite emaciated , as you may see , and then she took her food regularly. About , two weeks ago she lirst began opening her eyes and staring before her in a dazed bert of way. The only time she really spoke cohorwitlywas the other day , when she asked for colTeo and toast. She told mo when I brought it to her she that she wanted the toast ( lipped in thocoirce. " 'Jt is all very strange to me. A young hldy friend of mine who is quite as skeptical as you arc came hero to see Laura. She is a beautiful singer , and while she sang she kept her eyes on Laura by looking in the looking glass. As the song grow in volume Laura opened her eyes and looked directly at my friend , and appeared to enjoy both the sight of tlio young girl and the 1 sound of her voice. She closed her eyes as soon UH the song ceased and no coaxing could induce her to open them again. " The entire case is undoubtedly a most peculiar one. The story of the sister would lead to the belief that there is something wrongwhile the looks of the patient , her sore ears and heremaciated condition are genuine. The blood is the source of health , make it pure by taking Hood "a Sarsaparilla - arilla , which is peculiar in its curative power. A Joke On Mark Twain. San Francisco Chronicle : Away buck in the sixties , when Mark Twain resided in San Francisco and was the regular correspondent of the Virginia ( Nov. ) Enterprise , ho was a character among tlio Bohemians , and associated with many jolly souls who are still well known in San Francisco. Mark was an ardent angler , and was never happier than when sitting with bis logs dangling over the side of a cosy yacht , and waiting for the slow and la/y nibbles of the deniv.ens of the sea. In those days Alexander Badlam and Pult Berry owned the steam tug Funny Ann , and to grntily Mark's piscatorial whim they fitted her up one day with n do/.en or two bottles of bait and a line lunch , and with n few choice friends steamed off for Angel island. Mark had con stantly expressed as the desire of his life that lie might catch a mess of red rock cod ; those in the San Francisco markets being of a bright red , very at tractive to look at and very choice food fish. fish. The The party consisted of Mark Twain , O. P. Button , formerly secretary of the Pacific bank ; General John McComb , then editor of the Altu ; n prominent San Francisco judge , now deceased ; Alexander Badlam and Fulton Berry. The two latter , knowing fully well that , there were no red-rock cod this side of the Furallotio islands ; purchased a large , line specimen in the market , and placing it in a gunny sack , smuggled it on board the steamer. After ti pleasant Bail across the bay the Fanny Ann was anchored across the stream at a point on Angel island known as Rnlston's Quarry , so called from the fact that the rock for the Bank of California was taken from that place. The tide was ebbing strong , and after anchoring , all the party except Badlam and Berry dropped their lines on the lower shio. These two gontlenioi' dropped theirs on the upper bide ot the steamer , with their lines drifting under the steamer , while .those on the opposite side trailed toward the sea. When unnoticed - noticed Badlam attached a largo red rock cod to his line , and , apprising others of tlio fact , pulled him to the surface amid great excitement. The fish was immediately placed in a barrel of water which had been pro vided to keep alive what fish might bo caught. It was suggested to Mark Twain and his friends that they hud bettor fish on the upper side of the steamer , as they prefer shady places , which was concurred in. After the lines had boon trailed under the steamer , Berry removed the bait from bis ho ( i and on the opposite mdo trailed and caught Mark Twain's lino. The lattei complaining that his line was foul , was assured that upon the swinging of the steamer it would soon loosen. In a few moments the rod-rook cod was taken from the barrel and hooked onto Mnrl ( Twain's lino. A vigorous pull was given and at the top of his voice Mark yelled out : ' 'J have got a whale ! I have got r whalol" lie landed him in line shape the two jokers taking him oil' the hooli and placed him in the barrel. Mnrl < immediately procured a piece of chnlli and commenced to score the catch o each of the fishermen , and during the next two hours the same Hsu was hookct on lnf the same manner fifty or sixtj times , on the lines of all the parties and pulled up in the same manner ant placed in the barrel of water , Twain , o coui-f-o , having caught the largest mini bor. When the fun became monotonou ! Berry hooked the fish in the tail , hop ing that Mark would catch on to the joke , hut ho did not , but simply said ' 'It takes an artist to catch a fish on tin wrong end. I have often done so it trout fishing in Novudu. " The llbh having had its gills all ton out , scales almor.1 torn off , and no pluci to hook on to him any more , the jokers in desperation fished up Twain's lim and Button's line at the same time am tied a monkey wrench on the forme nml a hatohot on the latter. Scream were raised that they had got a devil fish , and the wrench and hutchct wor landed on the deck , Words canno depict the faces of the fishermen Twain pulled elf his coat , looked at th score , looked at the monkey wrench , at the hatchet , an < then ut the barrel , rolled up hi ilcoves and fished out the poor , BO ! ) tary. 'worn out'rcd'rbek codnttd , holdr ing it 'aloft' , snidj "Boys , 'w have .had lots of fun to-day ; lot's1 go home.Ho was the only ono who took it good nn- turedly , the other gentlemen refusing to converse on the Rport of red rock cod fishing , and always looked on the trans action tifl a very mean joke. Wo have looked through all of Mark Twain's writings on his life in Cali fornia , and wo have failed to find any account of this fishing expedition that he went upon and had such rare sport. I am ono of the oldest horse sheers in the town , and I have used your Salva tion oil for cracked heels , mange , and sand cracks with horses ; it given per fect satisfaction. CHAS. W. LKK , 414 W. Baltimore Street , Balto. , Md. A Methodist preacher hinted that it would be nice to go to Europe , as his throat trouble was getiing worse , but the good deacons sent for a bo'ttle of Dr. Bull's cough syrup , and consequently - , ly now enjoy a good sermon. The Cat nnd the President. Chicago Herald : Tlio other evening - ing while the president and Mrs. Cleveland , accompanied by Dr. Ward and Mrs. Lament , were seated in n box at Albuugh's opera house witnessing the play "Fedora. " a ludicrous scene occurred. At the climax of the last act , shortly after Fe dora drinks the phial of poison , and while she is in the death throes , a big black cat , the theatre mascot , walked on from behind the scenes , and , cross ing the footlights , leisurely made his way out on the rails before the presi dent's box. Stopping before Mrs. Cleveland he carefully surveyed her and then attentively scanned the other members of the party. Satisfying him self that it was the president and not an impostor that had attracted the ga/e of the audience throughout the play , ho slowly turned about and disappeared in a vacant box. The audience enjoyed the incident hiifjoly , but Fedora's death scene was ruined. Leland hotel , Chicago. Progress" In Japanese. The " ' " boon "Pilgrim's Progress" has' ' translated into the Japanese language. It is profusely illustrated by native art ists , and the pictures appear to be very comical to European eyes.
