CIIICAOO I'llOnUCB MAKKET. CiiiCAfio , Jan. 12. [ Special Telegram to the ] There was slow upcculatlve action in the grain markets on 'ehniiKo enrly to-dny. At noon there had not been more than , ' 40 lluctuittlon In corn , wheat or out * , and ull of these grains were steady at very close to the closing quotations on Wednesday. Hutchinson - inson was found selling May wheat over 8lc find tjiiyitigbclowtlmt point , and there was no bold trading by others and little or no outside Influence. Corn seemed to be held up a little by the receipts , which were thirty-three cars under the estimate. While thercnppearcd to lie a halt in thu work of the bears In the grain pits , there was a repetition of their work of yesterday In the provision pit. Their source of encouragement toscllordlseouragementto hold the stuff was largely In Uie receipts mid prices at the yards. With 20,000 hogs left over and the oftlcial estimated receipts of 512,000 hogs this morning and prices 15@2K ( ) lower , it did nut take long for mess | > ork for May to touch tlfi.OO. The close lust night was at $ l.'i.2r . Short ribs opened iOo under the close mid lard Fold n few cents lower. The situation in wheat to-day was not interesting or exciting. The range of prices was the narrowest for weeks. Tim receipts were thirty-seven cars , a few cars more than expected , and the estimate for Friday was but thirty-two curs. The usual light receipts were noticed In the northwest. According to recent actions of the market a slight advance was looked for by scalpers tills morning , hut the upward movement stopped with J c. Cables weri ) dull and indicated u downward tendency In American wheat at English { mints. The slight action in the pits was largely dictated by one man , who is a heavy carrier of wheat. The range for the session was : January , 77j < ( < Z.7I.c , closing nt 77'f'c ' , ; February sold lit 77 } 077X < - ' , and 77Jfc , eios- ing at 775 < e ; March sold at 7 4@7& ; < Je ; May opened and closed at 8-tc ; the lowest point was fc. JfO'WjMi' , and the highest point , ' < ( . Tliu corn crowd had less ambition to do liny independent trailing than those in wheat. The range of prices was but if e , and the close was at the outside , or Jic ; better than yester- day. Under tlicdreumstances corn showed more strength than other grains , as it re- Misted this downward tendency of provisions. One aid to this was the receipts , which were only 145 cars , mid the official estimate for tomorrow - morrow was but 14."i cars. January closed at 48Jn'48JKe. February sold at 4SJ $ < < ISjre , and closed at thu outside. May opened as it closed at 5te : sold at We , then down to M11' , and closed at 5-lc. The pit was quiet in the extreme. There was no trading In the speculative erowd in' oats outside of May delivery. ICtirly futures were nominal at yesterday 'H llgures. May opened at : Uc , sold up to IHijc , and closed at Hl u. The receipts were 1)0 ) cars and the estimates for Friday 82 cars. Provisions weru moderately active but un- Ki'ttled. The receipts of hogs wcro larger and prices lower. Tills created a weak feeling - ing in thu market for the product. Traders who have hammered the market for several days to force country holders to unload , re- newcd their tactics and although May pork touched $15jOO , the selling on stop orders that was cxpecteiVto result from u decline to the Into llguro was not suftlcicnt to produce a further depression. Shorts became nervous at thu bottom and began covering. This reversed - versed the market and an ndvuncu of 20e followed - lowed , but the last sales at 1 o'clock were at f 15.15 for May , a decline from yesterday's close of 12Jje. The reaction was assisted - sisted by u report from Cincinnati that the I'rico Current made the shortage in packing in the west to date 500,000 hogs and for thu season 700HK ( ) hogs , also a shrinkage in weight of 10 pounds. Lard was lower at the opening , May selling at $7.00 , rallied to t7. WX V.07 > { and closed at I7.C5. [ Special Telegram to the HEK.I CATTLE Trade was brisk , which looks odd enough under the cxtriiordi- nary run of the past three days and for the week so far , as the figures now look as though the receipts will show up among the largest on record. With the number left from late trains last night there were very nearly , 14,000 on mind , yet there was no notlcablo Imlt'in ttic demand , as there were liberal shipping orders , together with orders for n couple of cargoes of export steers. Then the regular dressed beef trade seemed to want their uverago number. Business commenced early and ruled steady to the finish. As far as prices wcro concerned , tlicro seemed little or no changn on good ami useful stock. That plain , unfinished and only partially fattened Htock would sell lower is not to bo wondered nt under the circumstances. Native butchers' Ktock was in good demand and rather on the up turn than otherwise. Canning stock sold moro readily and at a shodo better prices. Charley Maloy is the greatest man at the stock yards for getting away with the other boys' stuff. He capped the climax yesterday. A number of the salesmen were looking at a load of hogs and guessing at their weight. Some one suggested that each chip a quarter and the one guessing the nearest take the pot. Twenty responded and after they all got through Mulcy guessed within three pounds pocketed thu cash and strolled up to the exchange. In referring to the prevailing price list in the HEK.'S stock report s&me salesmen have contended that choice steers are quoted too high. For the benellt of shippers the Hun rustler desires to state that although there are very few sales of cattle made at W.)0 , a good prime fat steer from lilOO to 1500 pounds will bring S4..10. when the market is in an ordinary condition and a bunch of pnmo fat cattle , such as is intended by the Hun in its quotations , will sell for $4.50 to-day. Some weeks ago it will be remembered that two bunches of choice cattle sold on this market for W.OO and the mirket was in a worse condition than now. This list is not intended to bo misleading nor is it. I . must bo borne in mind that ordinary stock will not command this llguru but good prime will. _ OMAHA WHOLESALE MARKETS.
