CIIICAOO , Jan. 10.-- [ Special Tclcfc'ram to the
UF.K.J Fluctuations were not wide In thu
wlient market thin morning and they BcoincJ
to be ciniBcd chiefly by tbe m-cessltlcs of the
KcnlM | > rit. Some of the heaviest local spocu-
luturs were in the market , but their opera
tions \VITO not on a very large scale und
orders from the outsldo were infrequent.
AfTordlngly the fact that local dealers had
oversold or overbought themselves xvas
worth n ' 4'c fluctuation i\t almost any time ,
but still the tendency of prices was upward
nnd at each decline there was good buyiug
nml it was not quite certain where it cumo
from. Armour'H niimo Is being mentioned
frequently these days in connection
with long wheat , but the mystery of that
rich man's ' working In the speculative
markets is so dense that nobody speaks with
confidence. Ilutchinson was again a buyer
to-day and Hloom was credited with coverIng -
Ing some of his short wheat. May wheut
opened at H4c and during the early trading
sold tit S84ii on the split , this being the
lowest point of the session. The advance to
84J o was gradual and at that price there
were few buyers unit a crowd of sellers.
Only smtiil fraction orders to sell at that
figure could be tilled , although the price was
touched tnnru than once during the session.
The advance was said to be largely duo to
t overing by local shorts. The 1 o'clock close
was at X4H'j4i : ( e.
The corn innVkct was strong nnd at one
tlmu the May future was almost' ' lo higher
tliuu at yesterday's close and the advance se
cured as the result of the morning's trading
was Jfi ! . Considerable of the selling was
thought to bo for New York account , but this
WHS more than offset by some lively covering
of shorts on the part of Hloom , who was u
heavy seller yesterday. He was openly sell
ing a little to-day , but the active buying by
half a doion broilers was believed to bo for
him , The strength in wheat and pork assist
ed to strengthen this market and tno light
J.\ \ receipts expected for to-morrow were a
stimulating influence. May corn opened at
Kl c , and this was the lowest price of the
session , The advance was gradual but al
most continuous to M OiSIX- The price
then fell to 54yc , advanced to 54J < c , and the 1
o'clock close. Was at 51 > V' ' . February corn
opened at 48J o , advanced to 4 ! ) > 4O asked and
closed at that price at 1 o'clock.
The speculative oats market was dull and
featureless , the tendency of prices being up
ward in sympathy with the other grain mar
kets. Trading was entirely in May delivery ,
which opened nt34c , sold down to 34 > c in
early trading , then advanced to34J < c , and
closed atlMVc at. 1 o'clock. January oats
were nominally worth Ii2c.
The provision tr.ido was a little quiet. Out
side orders of all kinds for speculation as
well as for cash property were also limited
to Intlucncc , and the small business trans-
nctod was largely of a local nature. The
da.v's market , In u word , was comparatively
uninteresting and featureless , yet. barring
lard , a strong feeling had control. Lard was
moruor less bc.irish.ly inclined , and for the
different deliveries declined C@ Xc from
last night's closings. In pork the
Advance amounted to 5@Hc. ) Short
ribs were unchanged. Speculative
interest , as usual , was confined in the main
to May , which sold at § 15.52' ' < f@15.lo for pork.

Biiortribs. For the same mouth pork closed
at $15.75,1 , lard at7.82' < f bid and short ribs

were quiet. At the close January pork was

CHICAGO , Jan. 10. [ Special Telegram to
the Bsn.l CATTLE Trade was slow at the
opening , with little or no change as com
pared with yesterday , but later on , as the
receipts began to show up heavy , trade
dragged , prices weakened unit the general
market closed unsettled , with a down-turn
on plain nnd common stock. In a general
way best heavy -cuttle about held their own-
that is , barely steady. Host grades of native
butchers' stock is selling steady , more on the
up-turn than other. viso. Low grade natives ,
including canning stock and old thin cows ,

Cattle.
The receipts of cattle were quite heavy
and the market was very active nt prices
some better than those of last week. While
hero were no strictly first-class cattle hero
hero was a fair sprinkling of good stock.
The local and shipping demand were both
inite active and 0'J5 ' nead changed hands.
Uutehcrs' stock was la very good demand.
The market is hi.ulicr on all grades , but
whether this condition of affairs will con-
.inuo to exist it is at course impossible testate
state , but it ! believed by many that the
narkot will not retrograde to any alarming
extent.
Hoc * .
The rcceiptR were moderate anil when
iho market opened there wan about thirty-
live loads in sight. The market opened with
Buyers offering about the same prices as on
Monday , but salesmen refused as a rule to
accept. There was a fair demand and the
receipts were of a good quality which
; > romptcd this action. The market was
ibout Klc : higher on the best grades while
light stuff was nearly steady. Ten loads were
left unsold.
Sheep.
The receipts of sheep were 107 head , of
which 102 sold on the market at $4.00 , the
highest price paid. Other guides are about
