THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY , JANUARY 7 , 1888. THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Outsiders Once Moro Take a Hand In Whont Trading. CORN DULL AT SMALL RANGE. The near Klrinrnt Makes Itn Influence Felt 111 I'rovlHlOIIH BtlHltlCHH III Cattle JlrlHk ArrlvtxlH of CHICAGO I'ltomJCK MAIIKKT. CittCAno , Jan. 6 , [ Special Telegram to the BKK.I In thu wheat market to-day trading wai much more general nnil the outsldo pub lic seemed to have more to tlo with It. Hutch- IDROII , who has boon the most Important bull , Bcetncd to IKI letting thn market alone , but his supposed large holdings were not \vlthout influence , nevertheless. They are an ever- present menace to local traders who may want to put prleci up , since. they may reason ably expect to have that load turned over to them , and they make short sellers nervous. Yet there was wheat wanted , and the great est depression during the session saw prices but ytc. lower than at the close yesterday af ternoon. May wheat opened at 84Jfc , dropped to 8c , advanced to 84fe , fell to 84Vo , later to 84Jf@8 n8'c , advanced' ' to 84 * c and closed at 1 o'clock at 8-IJ c. February wheat opened nt 7b | < c' , advanced to 78c bid , fell to 77o und closed at 1 o'clock nominally at 78e. Do mestic news was bullish and foreign bearish. Against this latter the bulls could point to re ceipts at primary , markets , the smallest , so far , only aggregating 1711,000 , bushels at nine principal points. Moreover , u very cold wave was mild to bo traveling southward and re ports from winter wheat sections In this Mate that the young plant is uncovered and poorly prepared to meet severe weather. Corn traders saw about the dullest day of recent times. The entire range was but } { c , but during half the session the pit was almost deserted. The Liverpool cable quoted si > ot corn flat , with poor demand and IJ d lower and futures all lower. May corn opened at Mc , which was yesterday's closing price , und the only fluctuations were between that price and MJ/fe / , the 1 o'clock closing being at February corn opened atWe. . sold up to .o and closed at 1 o'clock at 4/Jo ( ) / ( bid. Oats were strong early , but declined to ward the middle of the session In sympathy with other markets , and closed fractionally below the opening price. Trading was not very active , and was entirely in may de livery , which opened atlHjife , sold up to 'XMc , , declined to JlUttiZiil&u " , and closed at 3I % ( < 7 > JHJfc at 1 o'clock" . In provisions the bear clement again inado its influence felt. Kncouruged by the con tinued free arrivals of hogs and the dis position shown by puckers to sell to cash buyers , the p.irty desiring lower prices were liberal sellers. Trading opened < it last night's closing's to a shade easier jlgines , and as the session progressed the market was hammered by liberal ofTcrlnus in a de cided manner. The bear interest took hold with a determination , and at 1 o'clock pork noted nn actual decline of ate , lard of ! i4 ! ( & 5c , and short ribs of lll@l % < % . The highest and lowest prices quoted prevailed during the first half of the session , and in pork the decline was too rapid , and too much the result of manipulation to allow brokers to execute their orders. TradIng - Ing was active , and , us usual , May was the favorite future. For the month named pork Bold from J15.no down to gin.'JTK , lard from * 7.H2K to ? AFTKIINOON SKHHIOX. The markets took n downward dip on the Into board , but the leu- dencv was checked by covering of an extensive sivo line of short wheat by Bloom , which put May to 84J < e.
