CHICAGO PJIODUCK MARKET.
Cnic/iio , Jim. 4. [ Special Telegram to the
Urn. ] The wheat market appeared to bo
left wholly to the professionals . to day ami
there was a great buttle in the pit. Ream
onil Cudahy were on the one sliloaml Hutchl *
Hon on the other. Hcmn was there In j > crsnn
Helling Inrgc blocks. Against 'thli hammer
ing Hutchison's ' purchases were the strongest
support and the battle was JUKI about a draw ,
May wheat closing n fraction lower than last
night's close , but , ' ( ,0 higher than the opening
this morning. The outside public seemed to
bo leaving the market atone as a general
thing. News was rather In favor of the
bulls and Its influence seemed to bo felt oc
casionally , but oftcuer the fight was carried
on without reference to outside circutn-
stances. The public cable quoted spot wheat
at LlverK | > ol quiet at unchanged prices , but
futures were lower. The cn-piissago state-
mcnt showed a decrease of 1 , : XOOC ) , bushels
on the way to the United Kingdom and a do-
crcusc of 80,000 , bushch for the continent.
This fact was credited with causing a good
advance at one time In the session. May
wheat opened at 84J c and during the early
trading , under heavy offerings by local bears ,
dropped to 81'fc ' , then advanced to 84e , and
fluctuated between that price and 8-c for
homo time , later advancing to 84J c and
closing at 1 o'clock at S4e. A fair quantity
of grain bought by one commission house was
believed to bo for Kent. February wheat
opened and closed at 7c. The high point
was nominally 78 > V and the low TT o.
The corn market was decidedly dull most
of the day and fluctuations were within a
range of J-fe. A depressing inllucncc was the
delivery by one house yesterday afternoon of
500,000 bushels of corn which was not ex
pected to come out. Its Influence was chiefly
full on nearer futures , January , which closed
at 1 o'clock yesterday at 4)5 ! ) < c bid , standing
lit the close of this morning's session atIS o
iisKcd. May corn opened all r l c , which was
JiC lower than yesterday afternoon's close ,
and fell another \f \ to 54V during the early
trading. This was the low point , and gradually -
ually , without any very heavy trailing , the
price advanced to 54X < 'j casing off toward the
close and resting at Ma , the opening price ,
nt 1 o'clock. February corn opened at 4IJ ! c.
Hold down to 4 ! > k < : and up to 4'J 'u and closed
nominally iit49J < c at I o'clock.
The oats market was rather dull and prices
were somewhat lower. Thcro was some
covering of sales made some Unto ugo for
country account against oats stored outside ,
and these purchases wuro credited with holdIng -
Ing the inarkol fairly steady. May oats , in
which was the only trading , opened at I4J ! < c ,
Bold down to 3lc and closed at 1 o'clock at
JHJi'c. February oats were nominally Uli-Vfc.
In provisions a weaker fee-ling was duvrl-
oped. The depression experienced on the
late board yesterday was further increased
by the monthly stock exhibit , which , in the
items of lurd and pork , exceeded general ex-
pectatlons , and also by advices from the
Block yards. Hogs were in better supnly
rjt , and lower and with largo receipts of the pro-
I A duct reported on hand the bear element were
encouraged to act with more confidence.
/ Lard and pork were offered freely and before
I the arrival of the noon hour the former suf-
fared a break , based on last night's closing ,
of 15iS17 ( c , and pork ofllOc. Later pork recovered -
covered a llUlo , though I o'clock quotations
showed a decline of 20c. Lard closed at n
depreciation of la tlT c. Short ribs were
relutiveiy stronger than the other articles ,
and , although llttlo easier , suffered no rud-
leal change.
ArrniiNOON SESSION Wheat higher ; May
opened at84csold , up to 853 < JiS5Je and
closed at SB sri' ' o Corn stronger : May
closed at Mo. Oats higher and fairly ac
tive for May , which opened at IMJfc , sold up
to Mo and closed at 35c asked. Pork was ad
vanced Tic and closed at $15.10 .for January.
