CniCAOo , Dec. 28. [ Special Telegram to the
UKR. ] The wheat market opened strong and
higher thin morning uK | n foreign news as
much as anything , and it was a wonderfully
tempting market for those who had bought
yesterday at lower price * . They took advantage
tago of It and free realizing sales wcro the
feature of the morning's huslness , yet buying
was good enough to prevent any considerable
break , and the closing prices at 1 o'clock
wcro but } { c lower than those reached on the
bulge of yesterday afternoon. May opened
at 85c and Immediately advanced to 8Cc ,
but at that price thcro was abundant grain
for nale and realizing sent the price down to
85c , from which thcro was a reaction to
86) ) 0 and then n further drop to STic and an
Improvement to My-j(3S5Xc ( , the 1 o'clock
close being at 85 > c. January wheat opened
nt 78 0 , which wns the highest point of the
Hcsslon , sold down to 78 @T8Vc , reacted to
78 ? < c and cloned there at 1 o'clock.
The course of prices lu corn was much the
same as the wheat market , and thcro wcro
about the same Incidents at the opening.
May corn opened at 54J c , which was J < c-
higher than yesterday's close , nnd immedi
ately advanced under good buying orders to
Me. This was an opnortunity for holders
who had n prolit in their purchases , nnd they
improved it. When the immediate demand
nt the opening was satisfied the price gradually
fell iiwuy under free realizing sales to M % < < $
MJ c. At about 5l' e a considerable amount
of grain was wanted and ono local bull was
generally credited with the "purchase of a
largo amount at that price. Thcro was , how
ever , good buying by commission men
throughout the session , and thcro was a fair
volume of business , the price for the May de
livery being about W ftZM fe during the
greater part of the session , anil closed nt 1
o'clock at Mc. January corn opened at
40-Vi1 , sold down to 4'Jc and closed at 1 o'clock
There was unusual activity In the specu
lative outs marketand prices advanced some
what curly , but the advance was not main
tained The trading was chiefly in May de
livery , which opened at U4Mc , which was } c
above last night's close. The advance scctned
to bo largely caused by the t > uddcn alarm and
covering on the part of shorts , but the wide
difference between the price or oats and corn
makes many friends to the former grain at
present prices. As yesterday at 34j c and the
lay before at S4cto-day the crop seemed to bo
for sale ut.'HJfe , and thcro wcro not enough
buyers to hold the price there. On the down
turn 34J/C was readied , and the close was at
U4\'c. January outs sold at ; ilc.
In the provision trade thcro was consider
able activity from the start. Interest , how
ever , was largely confined to porkwhich was
sold freely for May delivery by a leader of
the bull element. The unlnadingof this party
was said to amount to 50XX , ( ) barrels , nnd un
der his offering the market broke during the
day4U ! c. i'ork for May opened at $15.b7
and after selling sparingly at * 15.00dcclined
almost steadily to $ lri.47 | , which was
touched shortly before the noon hour.
Hetwccn IS and 1 o'clock the market
advanced a little and closed at f 15.7Ufwhich
was UAe under hist night's closings. January
and February declined 'J2) ) @ 'J5c , the former
resting at $14.5 ; and * February at ? 15.1(1. ( In
lard and short ribs the movement was cur
tailed by the interest taken in pork and for
both prices wcro also easier.

NEW YOUK , Dec. 28. [ Special Telegram t
the BEE. " ) STOCKS The notion of the stool
market was as much of a surprise to-day a
it xvas yesterday. The cause , however , wa
the reverse. The market , at least at th !
season , Is a narrow , scalping one , confined t
room traders , The general tenor of pro
fcsslonuU Is bullish and they are trying t
galvanize the market and predict a big ad
vance after the uow year ox.-ns. | They urgu
that the payment of over $100,000,000 , in div
Ocr.tls next month will cause a general buj
Ing of securities that cannot help but sen
prices up. Moderate selling by Investors elate
late and the Inability of the bears to shu'c '
out many stop order holdings by their receii
attacks , Is u sign that stocks are lu the hand
of parties who are nblo to keep them. Th
money market shows more activity , owing t
the shifting of loans , some banker * calling i
their loans to prepare for the payment of ii
tcrcst and dividends January. 1. Rates , how
Iyer , have not udvaucca , as many had outlc :
patcd , and are still reasonable 6 * { id 0 per
cent. Notwithstanding these favorable In
fluences held out by the bulls , It Is strikingly
apparent that the outsiders are not trading ,
and as the commission people as n rule nro
not advising purchases , they arc doing lltllo
or no business , nnd this condition of affairs
is liable to continue the rest of the week.
Coalers and Grangers receive the most at
tention. The Heading strike , although re
ported settled , creates an uneasy feeling.
The large traders who were credited with
buying yesterday were understood to bo sellIng -
Ing to-day and prices declined on an average
of 1 point. The Grangers were quiet nnd
easier , dropping @Ji per cent. Union Pa-
clflc was bought by London nnd opened J
higher , broke 1 point , but rallied 'f. The
rest of the list was slow nnd li(31 ( point
lower. The market began to drng after mid
day and continued slow until the close , when
last sales were at Inside figures nnd showed
declines extending to 1J4 per cent. The total
sales were 174,75'J shares , against 2 < i2iU2
shares yesterday.
