CHICAGO , Doc. 22. [ Siwclal Telegram to the
BBB. ] Very little excitement can bo obtained
from n range of prices of , ' < o utid it was all
wheat trailers had to work upon during all
but about a quarter of an hour of kthls morn-
ine' . Even the of
Bcssion. Blight upasm ac
tivity at the close failed to extend thin range
more than t c. The process of "cvcnlnRUp , "
preparatory to the three days vacation , was
probably begun to some extent , but the local
clement it bearish. It expects a slump about
holiday time and is prepared to take advant
age of it if it comes , consequently local trad
ers were sellers this morning. Thcro was
also seine moderate selling for Now York ac
count early. The exporting houses wore
buying wheat. Country speculators were
not believed to bo doing much. May wheat
opened at 8H/c , which was where It closed
last night , and for some time the trading wus
between that price and 84t'C' Then followed
an advance to 84 c and fluctuations were be
tween that price and 84J < c until fifteen min
utes of the close , when tncre was an advance
to 84 } c , which was touched twice , but there
were very few transactions at that price , the
closing ut 1 o'clock being ut 84tf@84J4c. ;
January wheat oiiencd nominally at 77'jjc ,
sold at 77 and 77B'e , and closed at the latter
price nt 1 o'clock.
There woi u somewhat wider range in the
corn market than in wheat , but even there
the extreme fluctuation was ytc. Trading
was largely local , but foreigners wore
represented there , and there was consider
able buying for their accounts. May corn
opened at 54/V54 c. There appeared to bo
a concerted attempt on the part of two or
three locol bears to break prices and the flrst
movement was downward , carrying May to
C3 @KiXc , when there was a reaction and
the market hung about .Mfff.lt' e for some
time. Later a raid carried It down to 53 0 ,
but a recovery followed before the 1 o'clock
close , which was at We.
The speculative oats market was the dullest
for weeks and was teaturclcss. The only
trading was for May delivery and that nt
only two prices W @mfa and 33c , the
flrst being the opening and the latter the
closing price. January oats were nominally

Cmctno , Dee. 22. [ Special Telegram to
the BKK.I CATTLI : There was another
sharp up turn on everything that was at oil
useful , some salesmen , and buyers , too , for
that matter , declaring that values were t > 0@
75o higher on certain grades than u week ago
to-day , The grade on which there is the
gi cutest advance Is the so-called undesirable
stock of 1250 to 1300 Ib averages or there
abouts. Then again the yet common sorts
sold fully ROe higher than a week ago to-day ,
in fact , the advance named does not cover the
appreciation in all cases. There was a fair
run of Texas steers , and such cows as would
suit the city butcher trade sold considerably
higher , but old cows , bulls and common can
ning stock underwent little change. Native
butchers' stock came In for Its share of the
advance in natives. The stocker and feeder
trade presented no now features. Shipping

Hoos. Thcro was considerable activity nt
the opening , with prices in some of the divi
sions n shade stronger , but as the afternoon
wore away trade became slow and the gen
eral market closed rather weak , with a large
number unsold. The Uock Island division
was the weak and low-priced part of the
yards to-day , as the run there was heavy and
some 10,000 wcro carried over in that divi-
nlon last night. The big packing linns did not
nem to want their usual number on account
of running short-handed from now on until
after Now Years. A few lots of fancy heavy
sold at $5.75@5.SO ; packing sorts , (5.40 ( < *

wcro slow. Now York sorts sold at $5.15 ®

NKW YOIIK , Dec. 22. [ Special Telegram to
the BEE. ] STOCKS The stock market was
more animated than yesterday , the business
up to noon being 105,000 shares , or 20,000
hares more than the total sales of Wednes
day. The market , however , was a listless
one , trading centering in a half dozen stocks.
London is doing nothing of consequence , and
trading was of the lame character , as for
several days past , mainly by professionals.
The sensational feature was an advance of 4
points In Chlcago.Uurllngton &Qulncyduetei
the increased demand from shorts , who were
unable to borrow enough stock to make theii
deliveries even by paying 'j' per cent for tht
u o. The bulge was short-lived and a drop ol
2 ixiiuts followed. The other Grangers were
stronger and ? B'@X 1'cr cent higher. Heading
advanced Jf i > cr cent but broke l } per cent
on the reported difficulty with its employes ,
Ouo house sold (100 shares and helped to depress -
press values. The rest of the. market was
steady , owing to nn absence of selling pros-

RIDING INA COFFIN.
How John MoAulcy Won a Hash
Wager.
Chicago Herald : Mr. McAuloy is ono
of the earliest settlers in Chicago. Ho
came hero in 1841 , when Chicago and
Podunk was . struggling to see which
could wear 'the largest swaddling
clothes. From a village of 0,000 inhab
itants ho has seen the city grow to such
dimensions that it takes the whole world
to manufacture its habiliments. Mr.
McAuley's business was that of a house-
mover and raiser. When the grade of
the business portion of the city was
changed , he was connected with the
firms which raised mostof the buildings.
Although possessed of excellent busi-
ncbss qualities , Mr. McAuloy was nt all
time eccentric. Ho had a great antipa
thy to railroad companies and disliked
to put money in their coffers by paying
faro. In the fall of 1872 ho had occasion
to visit Philadelphia. The faro at that
time was $29.
"I won't ' pay that much. " said Mr.
McAuley in convoasation with a friend.
' 'I'd rather walk. " The conversation
ended in a wager , Mr. McAuloy betting
that he could go from Chicago to Phila
delphia on an express train for less than
$10. The amount of the wager was
small , but Mr. McCauley's dander was
up and he determined to win it. For
three days he shut himself up in a
carpenter's shop , and the result of his
labors was a double-cased box seven feet
n long th by two aud one-half in width.
Holes wore bored in every side to allow
him a sufficiency of air a number of
;
i-acks wore placed inside the box in
which wore placed a quantity of food
and an ample supply of water. When
all arrangements had been completed
McAuloy crawled into the box und the
lid was nailed down. His friends who
entered into the scheme , hired an ex
press wagon and had the box taken to
the express office. Upon the upper lid ,
written in huge letters , was the follow
ing inscription :
JOHN McAULEY ,
Continental Hotel ,
Philadelphia , Pa.
This box must bo kept in a horizontal
position , as its contents will Otherwise be
ruined.
The box and the contents altogether
weighed 178 pounds , nnd the express
charges wcro $8.38. In an hour from
the time when he crowded into the box
Mr. McAuley was in a express car
traveling eastward at the rate of forty
miles an hour. Mr. McDermott , the
other party to the wager , became fright
ened as ho thought of the train speed
ing along over the roils with his friend
confined in the collln. Knowing Mc
Auley's eccentricities , ho thought that
death might come before ho would ac
knowledge himself to bo defeated. Ac
cordingly a telegram was sent to a point
whore it would intercept the train , and
an order was given by the express com
pany to refuse to carry the box contain
ing Mr.MoAuloy. Altoonu , however , was
reached before the order was executed.
It was about midnight when the express
messenger opened the hex , and McAuley
was sleeping as peacefully as if he were
in his own bed at homo. When the lias
wcro removed ho arose , stopped into the
center of the car , stretched himself out
at full length upon a pile of packages
and tried to continue his nap.
"You can't ride in this car , " said the
messenger , "it's against the rules. "
"My charges have all been paid , " re
joined Mr. McAuloy , "and you have no
right to put mo off.1
The messenger was in a quandary.
The human passage ref uhod to leave the
car , showed the receipt for the express
charges which McDermott had slipped
into the hex , and threatened a damage
suit if ho was forcibly ejected. By dint
of arguments , threats and persuasion ,
McAuloy managed to remain in the car
until Philadelphia was reached , when
ho sent McDermott the following tele
gram :
"Arrived as express. Total cost , in
cluding drinks and cigars , IU.75. "
