[ SpecialTelegram to the HLK. ] Wheat prices stepped a little bit higher to-day. Cables were lower , but the facts that exporters wcro buying wheat In New York and that wheat and Hour were now moving out of the country at a lively rate , were taken to bo of moro consequence than lower ( ( notations from the other side. First sales of Mny wheat wcro at b3 , ' c , but the price soon dropped to SS c'thcn slowly nnd with much lingering over each sixteenth , cllincd to & % , then fell back n little , and for most of the latter part of the session re mained In the neighborhood of Klg nndMVJc , advancing Just before the close to 8.X ) and resting nt tctjsfc at the 1 o'clock adjournment. January wheat opened at "iijffa 6 ° 'd ' UP to 7GXc and closed at 1 o'clock at 70.Ke. Tlio circumstance most talked about by the bulls was the reported clearance from the seaboard of 178,000 buslicls of wheat and the export from New York yesterday of ii.'JIU. barrels and 2 ( . ,1IOO sacks of flour , making an equiva lent altogether of about 250,000 bushels of wheat sent out of the country in ono day. It is also said that millers in the west were flndingan excellent demand for their ( lour for export. May corn advanced Ic during the early trading this morning , and , although the en tire advance was not maintained , closed * X ° higher as a result of the morning's trading. The remarkable strength in provisions was generally given as this Inciting cause for the upward movement , but the receipts , turning out only 215 ciiri against the estimate of 275 cant , doubtless had much to do with It. A decline of i < fi-was afterwards caused by the estimate of : i.5 cars fet to-morrow's receipts. However , there arc some strong believers in corn who are ready to buy upon any break of consequence. The shoit crop is constantly before them and they inquire where the re ceipts arc coming from and when the supply from Iowa , which is now coming in here , will be exhausted. A number of smaller shorts were said to have covered on the advance - vance to-day. May corn opened at fttjfe , and the lowest point touched and tnat shortly after the opening was Kljfc. ! ( Then the price advanced to MJfc , but broke on the receipt of the estimate for to-morrow. On this down turn M'/o ' was the bottom , and at about fil c the price lingered for n long time and finally rested there at the 1 o'clock close. Oats were Jlrmcr in sympathy with corn. Trading was light and chielly in May de livery , which closed at 1 o'clock J o higher than last niiht. In provisions the feeling was unusually nervous. Under the influence of light re . ceipts of hogs , an advance in the same , am : stiongcr product quotations from Liverpool trading opened in rather a wild manner. Initial salch were made at irregular though materially higher prices than last night' closings , and , although unsettled , the market showed decided Inherent strength from llrst to last. In pork the day's actual advance was IfifiWOe , in lard 15c and In short ribs 10o , Short sellers were the principal buyers though , owing to the irregularity of prices , moro than ordinary activity characterized general speculation. Then again the rumor was again current that there would bo an advance in rail rates from Chicago cage to castcru points , hcnco all the facts and rumors had a tendency to develop a better demand for anything that was at all useful , nnd Rome salesmen reported a substantial ad vance over the prices offered yesterday on stock carried over.
