election discloses ttio fact that Judge Samuel
Maxwell , .republican , has carried the state
over O'Day , democrat , by a,177 votes , the
greatest plurality ever given n republican
candidate hi the state. For the past two
days the state board of canvassers have been
compiling the return * and the vote for

cent of gain being much greater for the re

Of the atato agricultural society will bo held
at the state univeisity in this city on the 17th
of January. For the pilot two days Secre
tary Furnas has been in Lincoln looking after
business matters relative to the meeting and
securing the programmes for distribution
over the state. Ono of the features of the
winter incotim ; will bo the corn exhibit , the
first yut made at a winter meeting of the
board , and as the premiums are liberal a fine
exhibition of Nebraska's favorite cereal is
expected. The usual programme will ho fol
lowed at the winter meeting and , in addition ,
Prof. C. 1C. Hcusy will read a paper in the
form of a report on the grasses and forage
plants of the state. Prof. Hicks , of the
state university , professor of geology , who
bus given much thought and attention and
Investigation to the problem of immigration
with reference to the western part of the
state , will read a paper on that subject. The
Usual reduced railroad rates will bo accorded
for the winter meeting , and at the meeting
the premium list for the coming year will bo
nmdo up. 1 hose desiring programmes should
address Secretary Furnas at Urownville.

The governor has requested the live stock
( military commission of Nebraska and State
Voteiitmrinn Dr. Oerth to attend a meeting
tn be held at Springlleld , 111. , December II ) ,
ut which the live .stock commissioners of the
northern and western states will bo ivprc-
ncnted. The object of the meeting is to con
sider the subject of Texas fever and the best
way to prevent its introduction into the
northern states and to conduct the trufllc in
souther cattle with safety to the stock Inter-
estsof the northwest. The commission mid
Dr. Gerth will attend.

The live stock commission has passed the
following resolutions :
Hesolved , That the state veterinarian bo
requested to prepare a circular for the use
and benefit of the farmer * and stock raisers
of the state , containing information on the
following subjects :
1 , How contagious and infectious diseases

a. What indemnity Is allowed for stock
killed and under what circumstances.
! ! . The evidence of glanders and faroy in
horses uiul a description of diseases that may
bo mUtaken for them.
I , How to disinfect stables In which glan-
dored horses have been kept.
5. Said circular shall state that it is the in
tention of the commission to use their best
efforts to advance and protect thu , live stock

Dr. nuthcrford died yesterday morning at
3:10 : o'clock , from theeffccUof thooverJoaoof
morphine , under the effects of which ho was
found Monday afternoon , as reeordcd In
the UIK. : After ho had boou
treated for Homo time by the physlclnng , It
was supirosed that hu hod recovered from
the effect of the druff , yet It was decided that
he should bo wntched during the ntirht. Ac
cordingly several frlendtt , Mosnrs. H. Strlok-
ler , O. O. Cnldrr and Mr. ICrnimc , together
with Drs. Hubert and Drown , attended him ,
taking turns In watching hM condition.
Lute In the evening It became
apparent that the effects of the
morphine were too great and that it would
not 1)0 ponxlblu to relieve the proatrato phy
sician , and accordingly at the hour mentioned
above , the victim died. The remains were
yesterday removed to Urexel It Maul's ,
where nt 10 o'clock an Inquest was held > vhlch
resulted In a verdict that death had resulted
from an overdose of tnorpl'lnc. token with
what intent could not bo ascertained. A tel
egram was received yesterday by Mr.
Calder , mentioned above from Frank Huth-
isrford , brother of the deceased , resid
ing at Utlea , New York , and sup
posed to an attache of the Herald of that
place. It requested that the remains be for
warded to him and he would come out here
lalfr and pay all the costs. The doc
tor loft u number of books and other small
property , in the pocket of one of his coats
there being found between fcW mid $40. It is
claimed that some of the surviving members
of his family own n considerable number of
lots lu this city , The remains were embalmed
and were forwarded to their desti
nation last evening.

years , son of Mr. and Mrs. Hurkhard , and
grand son of A'incent Hurkloy , died nt the
residence of of his parents , 121 ! ) North Eigh
teenth street. The little boy hud been 111 but
n few dayn , having been severely attaeked
with pneumonia. _

Miss Austn Clark , accompanied by her
sister , Mrs. Well , left yesterday for
Tarkio , Mo. On their return these two ladies
will engage in the millinery business. The

An itinerant phrenologist who claimed to
bo a luiLMl desccndent of Suworrow , the cele
brated Polish general , was in the cityes -
tin-day feeling the bumps of the younjjor
members of the population.
A heifer which had three cars , the third
being quite small and situated just alongside
the right auricular , was one of the curiosities
nt the stock yards jesterday.
The grading of N street lias again been
resumed and every effort will bo made to
complete it before tlio ground freezes.
.lames Hrlttain , a prominent stockman of
Wood Kiver , Neb. , Is iaftho city.
The eastern , extension of the stock vards
will bo ready for use on Monday. Work
will then begin on the northern annex.
Henry Morgan , a butcher nt the Fowler
packing house had a linger cut off while
trimming horns yesterday. Dr. Kirk
Patrick dressed the wound.
George Seldcn of Aurora , is in the city.
Considerable complaint is heard on the part
of slock shippers concerning the action of the
H. & M. management relating to thoshipping
of cattle and hogs to this market. It is
claimed that stock is sidetracked 'at Lincoln
mid other points for three or four hours when
it should bo forwarded as rapidly as possible.
A po.tltion asking that this action bo cor
rected is being prepared and will bo for
warded ut an early date. Should the result
be not satisfactory other measures will be re
sorted to-
BO. F. Swift , the Chicago packer , was again
on the market yesterday , and is giving his per
sonal attention to building a cattle market.

The second performance of a "Grea
Wrong" took place last evening ut tlio Grand
Opera house before a large und enthusiastic
audincc. All the parts seemed even more
harmoniously balanced than they did on the
preceding night. Mr. Studley made a com
incndublo effort to correct the faults noticed
with the result that his reading was rendered
much more satisfactory to the audience. The
other actors sustained the estimate rendered
of them in yesterday's paper.

that Carroll was guilty of highway robbery ,

Frank Gibson , Mrs. O'Gannon says there is

Last night the regular election of Myrtle
lodpo No. 2 , 1C. of P. , took pluco at Custlo
hall , on Fourteenth street , near Dodie.
There was a largo attendance of niemlcrs.
The ofllccrs elected are David Kaufman ,
chancellor commander : John KolUonny , vice
chacollor ; George Nodel , prelate ; Isaac
Schiff , master of the exchecqucr ; G. W. S.i-
bino , master of llnance : H. V. Hilcman ,
keeper of records and seals ; George Uobcrts ,
master at arms. After the election the mem
bers , sixty-llvo in number , adjourned to Hig-
gins' St. Cloud cafe , where a very pleasant
and impromptu banquet was enjoyed by all.
County Hospital Ilnsomcnt.
Contractor Uyan , of the new county hospi
tal , says : "Wo arc still working and intend
to continue until the weather becomes too
cold to warrant any further action. Wo require -
quire but one week in which to complete the
basement , having already excavated 05,000
yards of earth and placed in position nearly
all the rock and brick work required for the
foundation. Wo expect to llnlsh the building
in August , though we have until fall for that
purpose If anything unusual fjiould occur or
wo should desire to avail ourselves of the
time specillcd. "
Paul Wolf ami His Mouth.
CHICAGO , Nov. 29. Paul Wolf , the young
mnn arrested yesterday for threatening to
blow up States Attorney Grinnell with a
bomb , was before Justice White to-day for
preliminary hearing. The officers who ar
rested him testified to hearing a speech nmdo
in a saloon in which a number of well known
revolutionists were gathered , in which the
prisoner threatened to blow up Grinnell.
Justice White lined him &M ) and put him un
der bonds to keep the peace. Wolf claimed
ho was drunk and did not know what hovas >
saying.
William Walsh , a shoplifter , was caught
stealing ti lot of underclothes in Kelly , Stigcr
As Co.'s store yesterday afternoon and was
turned over to the police.
