CHICAGO , Oct. 25. [ Special Telegram to
the Her. . ] The upward impulse In the wheat
market to-day canio from across the Atlantic ,
but tlicro was no luck of domestic or local
circumstances to Increase the strength bor
rowed In the first place from foreign sources.
Cables were strong and thereupon December
wheat opened at 73Jfe * and May at Tlt 'c , an
advance over yesterday's closing price of Jfo
for December and J c for May. Tlicro ap
peared to be plenty of buying orders and
they canio from all parts of the conutry.
Exporters were buying and a salu for export
of three boat loads at Jfc over yesterday's
closing prices was reported. Outside mar
kets wcio strong and higher , New York ad
vices bring that the cold weather in the
northwest was a strengthening factor In that
market and it was doubtless felt here. A
feature of strength purely local was the buy-
lug by two of the former bears , who Imvo
always u largo following among local traders ,
and whose ojierations are usually on a scale
to merit attention. The belief that they nro
large holders of wheat is a strengthening
influence. The second cable quoted

shrunk to insignificant proportions , aggrega

facts did not appear to have nny weakening
effect. The market continued firm all morn

In provisions a stronger feeling wns de
veloped. Lighter receipts of hogs yesterday
and to-day than anticipated , coupled with the
improvement in corn and wheat , rather
changed the sentiment of trade. The limits
previously made on buying orders In hand
were advanced and with increased demand
on outside account and from local traders ,
higher prices followed. The extreme out
side figures , however , were not maintained ,
though as compared with lastnight'seloslngs ,

Chicago Timed : A nicely dressed
man , wearing a Prince Albert coat and
a tall hat , stepped into Colonel Jack
Graff's wet-goodB store yesterday , and ,
after carefully viewing the surround-

"Dat's mo , " answered the colonel ,
stepping up to the stranger. "Vat kin
I do fur you ? "
"You ean probably see from my gen
eral appearance that I am no bar-room
loafer. Neither am I a prohibitionist.
I'm as fond of n drink as anybody , but
I've always got to take my liquor on the
quiet , I worked the Sunday school su
perintendent racket until I secured a
good position. If my employer found
out that I took a drink occasionally oil
would go my head quicker'n a mule can
kick. Now , then , if I take a drink in

"And if I take a drink here you'll

' 'You bed your bwced life I dou'd vas

"Then give mo some of the best
liquor you've ' got in the house , " wild the
stranger , and the colonel sot out a de
canter of twenty year old Bourbon.
The stranger took about four lingers ,
tossed it off with a relish , wiped his lips
with the Turkish towel hanging in
front of the counter , and , turning to the
colonel , lie gracefully bowed his thanks
for the delightful drink. Then ho bid
the co.onel "Good day , " and started to
leave.
"Say , mine frient , you vas * bout for-
