THE SPECULATIVE MARKETS , Forenoon Wanted In Waiting for the Visible Supply Statement. HEAVY RECEIPTS OF CORN. Provisions Htnrt , the W : ck AVItli nil KncournKiiig Inhibition of Inter est Tlic Hog Trntle IlrUlc CHICAGO IMtOIUJCK MAKKET. CIIICAOO , Oct. li > -SpoeIut [ Telegram to the HEK. ] Wheat traders spent most of the morning In waiting 'or the vUlulo supply statement , which was time wasted , so fur as any appreciable effect exerted tiinm the mar- Vet when it did come was concerned. An Increase of but iMtf.lKX ) bushels when the es timates had been for from WHXH ) , ( ) to 1,000,000 bushels Increase might naturally have been expected to furnish some encouragement to the bulls , but It did not udvunco prices. This was explained partly by the very general talk about largo quantities of * wheat going Into private warehouses in St. Paul and Dulutli and thus escaping the omelul Btutlstlchm. The first public cubic gave spot wheat steady and the second quiet with u moderate demand und prices unchanged. The October and November deliveries of California wheat were quoted lower in Llver- l > ocl , but January und May higher. Private cables were dull and some private advices from the continent were dull to this effect that Hlocks were liberal and that the situation generally was unfavorable for holders. New York reiorted | that the chief occupation on the produce exchange was "waiting" and that the feeling there was rather weak. News of any und nil descriptions fulled to affect prices in this murkct to any conslder- 'ablo degree , as can be seen from the range , which wus but } { e in November und ? u in December und May. The opening wus ut Saturday's closing figures 70J/C for Novem ber , 71J6e for December and 77 > < o for May. The close was at 70'f ( < r70Xe for November , 72J < 'c for December und 77H'ii77K ( for May. The corn market suffered most from the falling-oil in the demand for cush corn , buy ers having withdrawn because of the impos sibility of getting vessel room. Then there were heavy receipts 7S4 cars when but i > 5 were expected , oi.tl big receipts arc looked for to-morrow < KO cars. The increase in the visible supply also of W > 1,000 bushels was not without effect , though an Increase of 600,000 bushels had been expected. The mar ket opened ut Saturday's closing figures 41c for November , 4 < K@41o for December and 44Ko for May , untl the decline was quite uniform to 40V o for November und Decem ber und 4-IJ/o for May. Hutchinson wus selling corn early , but bought cush corn of all grades nearly und in liberal quantity at the decline und cheeked It. Under this buy ing half of the decline was recovered und the close wus steady ut 40Jfc for November , 40c asked for December und 44'fa ' : for May. At a decline of ! &C'f'Ue for oats the specu lative trade was u little larger to-day and more life was shown. Shorts were buying , and October and November were about on a level , both closing at 1 o'clock nt ' > } & . De cember sold nt 'A'lJ.i'Qi'.Ti t1 und closed at ' . ' .V'ffe , and May weakened from -.I' ' Jc ut the opening to aitfe , cloning on the split at Sii'fCrt'-WML1. ' In provisions the week opened with an encouraging exhibition of interest. Specula tion und general business fulled to show f [ much , if any , improvement on the recent ; i poor showing , yet the market claimed in- ; i creased attention and the outlook rather promised enlnrgcd trading. The feeling , however , was easier und with good receipts of hogs und u weaker turn in corn moro dis position to sell was shown. Lower prices were the rule and as compared with Satur day's final quotations short ribs for October closed nt u decline of .ike1 , January pork and short ribs of fie and lard for different deliveries of fie. [ Special Telegram to the BEE. ] CATTLE Prime native steers were scarce and selling fully up to the last week's prices , a few lots making f.'i.OOig.V.i'i. The ordinary run of shipping and dressed beef' natives were also scarce and selling fully up to last week's prices , some salesmen quoting a shade higher. Native butchers' stock was slow and as low as at any time. Stockers - ers and feeders steady. Dealers look for n moro active demand the coming week. Ilango cattle were in heavy supply and if it were | x > ssiblo to sell lower than the present low range , down values would go. Texuns are making no more money than lust week. [ Special Telegram to the HER. ] STOCKS The stock market was active , but intensely nervous. A better bor rowing demand existed than has been known for over a month , and in many instances a good premium wus paid. In some quurtcrs n decided change in sentiment has taken place over Sunday , while in others the bears > i were us pronounced us ever In their belief in \j lower prices. As a natural result thcro was n rush of shorts to cover and prices averaged a trifle better. An Impression prevails that Gonld has been ut the bottom of the recent severe decline in stocks , notwithstanding his frequent assertions that ho is out of the mar ket. It is said that after floating his largo block of Missouri Pacific ho began laying Ills plans for punishing everything to pre vent private concerns from floating their securities , which was necessary In order to continue their western extensions. The pub lic has already seen the result. Tlw market opened excited and Irregular , with most Mocks fractionally lower except Erie , St. Paul , Lake Shore and Union Pacific , all of which were K < 2 ? * per cent higher. The strength in these stocks had n good effect on the general list and the weak ones soon turned. The cliques supported their special- tics , the buying being the best in over a week. Many ojwators who lost lost week sent bearish dispatches , advised purchases for a small rally and during the morning ad vances extending to 1J < per cent were re corded , the Vanderbilts showing exceptional strength. London bought Lake Shore , Erie and several other stocks. Europe settled Heading. Thcro wus talk of a largo short interest In the latter and rumors of a squeeze. The last hour the market remained firm and last sales on the active list were at almost outsldo prices and recorded net advances of IJf per cent , Now York Central having the lead. Twenty car loads of baled hay. or about 170 tons , are required to supply the dully demand in Omaha. Jobbers in most lilies of business rcK > rt collections much better in the country than in O muha. Lumbermen report a brisk trade , but with a tendency on the part of dealers to run down ' .heir stocks as close as possible , us the money market tightens. . Sugar is now being carried front the Pa- ? illo coast to Missouri river at sixty cents per iiindred , but it is said this rate will bo ud- anced to sevcnty-livo cents. The weather of the past two weeks has ) Cm very fiivorablo for baling hay , and the re sult is that dealers in this city lnive hard work to sell it as fast us received. New crop figs arc coming forward In good ii/od quantities and find u ready sale nt satls- 'uctory prices. The crop this season is some- ivlwt curlier than usual , but the yield is not n heavy one , und the prospects for higher iriccs uro good. Trappers and hunters arc beginning to 111- iiiiro for prices on furs and uro getting their traps and outfits in shape. The season will open in about thirty days. Mnskruts uro the nest plentiful in this stnto of any of the fur- ticaring animals , and while they are very : ow , they are so easily taken as to make it a rentable business. The value of a skin de- icmls u great deal upon the manner in which t is handled. Indians have always surpassed ho whites in this brunch , and Indian-tanned furs command the bust prices. lleul Estate , Transfers.
