erty. . Corbott was taken to the state irt-
sane asylum , 1:11(1 will probably continue
an inmate of time institution as

say that it is impossililbie or bun to be
cured. J'hin story of his blood' deed ,
which so effectually blighted his life , a'iU
which has lhmially followed bin : into a
straigint-jacket vilL always be an intorest-
lug OUC , as being nart of a great national
tragedy. Boston Corbett was an Insignihi-
cant man at his best , but his maine wIll
always be linked with those of Lincoln
and Booth , and how It became so viil

It will be remembered that it was on
April 14 , 1865 that Booth assassinated the
president. tie mounted a horse and rode
over into Maryland. Cavalrymen , after
scouting tine country for eleven days ,
traced Booth to a barn on Garrett's farm
near Port Royal. The soldiers surrounded
tine barn and demanded that hlooth surrender -
render , lint ho refused. The barn was
lire(1. After the fire had bee : : started
Boston Corbctt stepped up to
tine barn and through : a crevice
eliot Booth through : tine neck. Cor-
bott fired without orders. lie was
something of a fanatic , ninth for a breach
of tiseiplino had been court-mailed and
sentenced to be eliot. Tine order , however -
over , was not executed , but lie had tcen
drummed out of the regiment. While
living in Boston , Mass. , ho joined the
Methodist church. Never having boon
baptzed ! lie was at a loss to know what
name to adopt , but after making it a
subject of prayer ho took the name of
Boston in honor of tine place of his con-
version. He was always undisciplined
and erratic.
Soon after he killed Booth : , Corbett
received an anonymous letter purporting
to be written by a confederate ollicer ,
threatening Corbctt'a life. ho really
believed that the throat would be carried
out , and the matter weighed so heavily
1poiI his mind that hie became partially
crazed. lie believed thiit sOuthern sympathizers -
pathizers were following him , anti to
this day he maintains that friends of John
Wilkes Booth arc on his track. It was in
the hope of getting away from his
imaginary pursuers that he came to
Kftnsas more than fifteen years ago and
n located in an uninhiabited portion of tine

on a farm near tine city of Dubuquc. She

crime , it becoming known tinat tine two

buquc last week , and resulted in a ver-
diet of murder in first degree. ' [ 'he
( Iramatic circumstances of the proceed-
lag were the hearnng of tine evidence of
thin children of the murdered woman amid
the prisoner , whose testimony was direct
and convincing , and Loft no doubt as to
the prisoner's guilt.
The laws of 1878 , which : re-established
capital puni8biuent in Iowa , also pmo-
vides tinat the jury which : renders a ver-
( hict of murder In the first degree , shall
decide whether tine penalty shall be mu-
prisonmont for life , or death. In this
case the jury decided for death , anti
unless the governor shall Interfere with
executive mercy , Kennedy will be tine
first murderer in Iowa under tIne new
law to pay with : his life for the expiation

that the prisoner cannot be executed
