CHICAGO 1'nonucK MARKRT.
CHICAGO , Oct. 4. iSpealal Telegram to
the JJKt : . | It was u day-bcfore-a-holtday
market all around at the start , with few
features of Interest , light trading and that
alr.ost ' entirety local , and a general feeling
nn'j air ot llitlesiness. The opening In
wheat was at yesterday's closing flicurvs for
November at 71s'c and nn advance of
&e for December nnd May A 7 ! c and 7Sc
respectively. There appeared to bo a toler
able firm market at the openliu , dependent
on buying for heavy local operators and of
smaller local traders , who found a straw to
guldo them In their purchases. Then for two
- hours the market remained almost station
ary at about the opening price , or Xc below.
The close was at 71M@71 > ( c bid for Novem
ber , 73K@7i : c for December , and 7'c for
May.
The corn market was firm throughout the
session , but the amount of business done was
Binall. llntclilnbon was a continual buyer
and other llcht trading was chiefly Jocal.
The board of trade cable quoted spot corn at.
Liverpool Xd dearer. The iccelpts wore 572'
cars. The receipts for to-morrow are esti
mated at 312 cars. The opening was at 42 } c
for November. 42j < c for December and 4.VaC
for May , and prices did not fall below these
. N figures during tlio session. The closing was
strong at thn highest-point 4242 * c for
November j42Xc for December and 45 c@
152/c for May.
Thorn was a repetition of yesterday's dull
ness In thn oat market. Not enough specu
lative Interest was shown to hold the crowd
together and prices were substantially un
changed. November opened nnd closed at
20Vc and at one time sold on the split at
2fl'A < 8S " { c. May oats stood at 2'JXc nearly
nil the forenoon , the market barely touching
8".i ® : iOo together. Cash oats In store were
nominal at iOo , or October prices , sales of. car
lots being entirely by sample.
Provision traders wore forced to pass an
other slow day. In the general market
thnro was no stir to bear mention at any time
nnd the business transacted fell under even a
moderate volume. A somewhat pronounced
listless fepllnt held control , and as hogs con
tinue to surprise packers In the number mar-
"keted , and have rather forced a revision of
the opinion regarding the "run" that may bo
expected during the first half of the winter
season opening with November , the move
ment favored buyers. Excepting ca h and
October lard , which viyio alTectcdby the light
stocks hero and commanded an advance of
? H 'i produce sold on an overage easier.
Uased on last night's closings , January pork
was unchanged , but In November , December
nnd January lard a decline ol ! ! X@5c and
, in January Uiort libs of 'JJ c oc-
'Hit curred. For cash delivery lard sold
freely to refiners and shippers at S0.471 ®
S0.57X and closed with buyers at 80.50. For
October the same artlelo was traded In at
0.47K@0.ftO , closing at SG.47K. with Novem

Oats steady. The sensation at the atternoon
session of the board was the sot ere break in
October short ribs. They opened at S7.40
and were hammered by Baldwin and the
b.oker of a prominent commission house
until they touched J57.00 , which was47Mc

they reacted and closed with Armour's rep

utocks closed slightly under the highest
lleuros of the day. The market opened
lower on part ot the list , while some stocks
kept up and a few were slightly higher.
London cables gave lower prices , with selling \
orders for foreign account. Still the fueling
was rather firm more bullish than yesterday
and Cammack's broken began to take In
their shorts. The loan crowd was active.
The buying of Western Union was the
feature of the day. Moore < fc Schley and
Connor bought largely and so did some
others. No ono seemed to tiavo definite

1HC qiTV COUNCIU I
Debate Over the Police Com *
nilssliiii'x Cninmunlnmtloit. I
The regular nicotine of the city council
wtis hold lust ovcniiiK. Air. Leo was
chosen tompornry chnirnmn , in the nb-
sonco of President Buchui. Messrs , Dud-
Ford nnd Ford wore also absent. Mr.
Hnsriall made a motion to rufcr nil com
munications without reading , but Mr.
Alexander urged Iho reading of the coin-
mnnlcatlon from ( ho lire nnd police com
mission. Messrs. Hurnlium and Klorstcml
supported Mr. Aluxitudur. Mr. Hnscall
Insisted that it was not necessary to read
it then , as tlioro was important business
on hand , nnd this communication
aimed at forestalling the action of
the meeting to bo held between
committees from the council and the
board of trade on the pollno inuddlo. Ho-
IB
said that there was nothing in the com
munication oxcnpt that the commission
wanted the council to take the mutter
into i the courts. The commission itself
could tuko the matter into the courts on
any ono of several points. Messrs.
Lowry , Bally and others supported lias-
call , but the latter finally yielded to Al
exander's demand. However , before the
reading of the paper was reached Lowry
again objected to having it read. Ho
said there was a lot of dirty , underhanded
work going on. This ended the dcbutn
and the various motions went by default -
fault , but before the communication in
dispute was reached in the regular order
of business the council adjourned.
Communications were received as fol
lows : Approving contract with Edward
tlanoy and James G. Carpenter for
opening Thirty-first avenue to Daven
port street : approving the clmngo of
grade of Twenty-second street from St.
Mary's avenlio to Leavcnworth street ;
communication from Superintendent
Whitloek calling attention to the prox
imity of the projected building of the
UIE : Publishing company to the now city
hall , claiming that part of the trenches
wore two feet four inches over their line ,
nnd that their excavations were now ten
feet below the footings of the city hall
wall ; Judge lierka's report for the past
mouth was referred.
A motion was made to amend the ap
propriation ordinance by inserting the
time roll of the ntiw policemen. This
was lost , Boyd , Cheney , iiascnll , Lee ,
Lowry , Manville , Snyder and VanComp
voting against it.
A number of additional judges and
clerks of election , to take the place of
those previously appointed but who
failed to qualify , were approved , after
which the council adjourned to meet
next Thursday evening.
AMUHKMENTS.
Al'PKAKANCK OP.KUEOA'S TKOL'UAIKIfH'S
AT THE OHAN1) OIT.llA HOUSE.
Contrary to expectation there was a
good-sued audience at the Grand last
night , on the appearance of Xerega's
Troubadours. These play the guitar , the
mandolin , the tambourine , the castanets ,
and ono of them , Suuorita Duwu Tcrval.
introduce ? what is termed a Spanish
n-olian. The playing of all these per
formers is remarkable for its precision
and expression. There are but livn in
stritmcnts , and vet they arc capable of
producing the volume and almost all the
rounds of n well balanced orchestra.
The grandest pll'oct , however , is pro
duced in tlio pianissimo passages. Ono
of these last evening , that of the mocking
bird , was extremely himutifjil. The
ones were extremely delicate , yet dis-
inctly dolined , nnd rosmnblcd a quar-
etto of rich , round female voices , the
noio prominent of which was the
soprano , the notes of which floated airily
is if from among the trei-s of the wood
with "which the stage was hot. Such an
mltation of tlio human voice alone was
an entertainment of an evening.
