CHICAGO I'nonucn MARKET.
CHICAGO , Sept 20. lS | eclal Telegram to
the JJKH.J Almost all the news was in favor
of the bulls to-day nnd the result was a
lively market all around , with a very satis
factory amount of business transacted. The
early Interest was in October wheat , in which
the scalpers Bcemcd to fear there might be a
quceze. Tnls option opened } ( @Xc hlizber
and rapidly advanced KC further. Cables
were llrui and reported an increased con
sumptive demand , with the tendency of prices
upward , In some Instances the limit on
foreign buy Ing orders was advanced KC. New
York was strong , higher and advancing ,
as were the other outside markets. Large
lines of short wheat for New York were
said to have been covered hero thin morn ing.
The exporters were said to bo 'buying.
Fleming & Hoyden continued to buy Octo
ber aud John M. Shaw was a persistent
buyer. The purchases of October for many
days by tlu lirst named house brought out
plenty ot guesses , the latest of which is to
the effect that they are for account of eleva
tor owners who now have comparatively
small stocks In store nnd desire to Indtico
free shipments from the country to nil
their bins , aud expect to bring
dbout this desirable object by raising
the level of prices. Elevator owners are said
to bo offering rebates to keep the wheat hero
that Is already In store and one of them , who
owns about one-quarter of the No. 2 spring
in store here , Is credited with having pro
duced a scarcity by refusing to part with any
of It at less than ) c above the market The
Visible supply statement was a iuruJlso. The
alk had been that there would be n small
decrease or n small Increase , but not much
variation from the stock of a week ago. The
announcement ol a decrease of 008,000
bushels appeared to be the force necessary to
accelerate the movement of the early morn
ing and nrlccs advanced another } { c almost
Immediately , and remained brm , closing at
the huthesl point of the day , with the vol
ume of business greater than for many days.
The October option closed nt 71 Kc , December
at 74c and May nt 70 ? < J(379Kc. ( The gain
for the day over Saturday's close was l' ( c $
IKc In October and December and l c In
May.
There was also an unusunlly large business
done In the corn pit. The opening was
fractionally above Saturday close at 41c
for October and 4444c for May and the
advance was almost continuous , amounting
on the day to % c in October and % c in May.
llutchlnson was a continual seller of the
.May option nmlV. . T. Uaker a buyer of Oc
tober corn. Irwln , ( ircena & Co. were also
buyers and towards the close of the session
Field , Dudley & Co. bought. The receipts
hero were considerably less than expected ,
but the estimated receipts for to-morrow are
largo 825 cars. Shipments to-day were GS3 ,
000 bushels. Vessel loom was taken for
155,000 bushels. The market closed linn at
the highest prices of the day 42c for October
and 45) c for Mnv.
Oats were steady and firm all the forenoon ,
with but little doing in a speculative way.
Price changes were within the smallest possi
ble range. There were sellers of May at
292/0 most of the session , but just before the
1 o'clock close the murkot developed consid
erable tlrmness and tt'Jc was freely bid for
that future. September and October rested
at 85c aud November S5 ! c. The regular
cash market was asaln nominal , car tuts sell
ing entirely by sample.
In provisions the day's sensation was
another unexpected break In October short
ribs. Finding that Its sudden declines of
last wrek and the week preceding failed to
Blmkoont the tailors , the house controlling
this line ot product again withdrew its sup
port Using the large receipts of hotrs as a
pretext , it opened the market for them "Oc
under Saturday's closing. The break suf
fered brought out largo quantities on stop
orders , and from S8ou@7. ( , some 750,000 Ibs
of short ribs for October were thrown over
board. It Is now believed that the
tailors have been fully thrown
off and that the corner under way
Is likely to have smooth sailing. After Oc
tober snort ribs the January future received
the most attention and for pork and short
ribs closed at an advance ot 5c and for lard
of V4c. } For the month named pork bold at
312.lMK@12.iiO. ' "d ttt 80.42 > i 0.47K and
short ribs at $0.'JO0.30 , closing all around at
outside prices. In the nearer deliveries of
lard an appreciation of 2Xc was established.
General trading was fair , and the market
commanded Increased attention. Cash
property was quiet.
