Two of the gambling houses have re cently come to the front and paid a license Into the city treasury. This rather goes against the theory that the indict ments were simply to force them to pay the city a license , sa those two wore paid before the indictments were found and they were indicted the same as those who had not paid up. Services iu the Congregational church to-day. Morning subject , "Tho Good of Church Going , " Evening , "Tho Knowl edge That Givoth Life. " Sentence Day. Judge Doomor yesterday spent most of the time in hearing motions and argu ments. There was little in the proceed ings lo interest tho'public generally. The Ugden house matter came up on a ilc- murrcr , and wcro rehearsed and argued with no very satisfactory results to the nowsgathcrcr. The only touch of sensationalism was when the judge ordered Deputy Sheritl O'Noil to call Herb Rothery. The order was obeyed , and although the voice of that ollicial could bo heard forever over ten feet down Broadway , Roth- cry did not put 'in an appear- ance. O'Neill , after calling him three limes , from the front door of the Masonic building , reported to the judge the Roth- cry did not seem inclined lo accept the invilaliou lo court. Judge Dcomer was all ready to pronounce sentence upon the young man , but had to content him self with having the bonds forfeited. Rothery has neon seen in Omaha on several occasions , and on Tuesday was in this city. It seems that the authorities do not want him very badly , or thoj would take stops to secure him. The task would not be very dlllicult , but the county seems willing to have the bondsmen - men do that work , if they want to save their bonds. Troubltid by Creditors. An account appeared in yesterday morning's HKK of the trouble in which D. H. Woodman , of Silver City , finds himself , and later developments are placing him in a very unenviable posi tion. Tlio facts of the case as stated by Mr. Schocntgou to a BEE reporter are as follows : In December last Woodman purchased a $400 bill of goods of Gronu- wcg and Lohoentgen and stated that he hau a $3,000 stock at Silver City clear of all encumbrances. It now appears that Farwell & Co. , of Chicago , were at that time holding a mortgage on the stook for 12,875 , but did not have the sumo re corded , as they wished to giva the young men u chance and not destroy their credit. The betrayal of the confidence of the above-named firm is ono of the most contemptible fealuros of the whole nflair. Mr. Shoent en mot Woodman Friday and , in reply to a few inquiries , < vas Informed that the stock had been sold for $3,000 cash and the money given to Woodman's wife. Mr. Schoentgen wished to know how his bill was to be settled and Woodman very cooly replied that ho Ima "sold out and didn't want tc talk business with any one. " The etory of his arresl , inabilily to ob < tain bonds and subsequent commitment to Iho county jail was told in yesterday's issue. Unless Woodman settles the matter , Mr. J. Sims will doubtless inaK'o 11 very unpleasant for him , as he holds the mortgage in Farwell & Co's. favor , being the attorney for that firm. Yesterday morning Chief Mullen , ol the police force , wont with Woodman and Attorney John Limit , to Silver City , to there straighten up Ihu mailer if possible. Those who know Woodman best are charitably inclined to the be lief that the young man innocently supposed that the fact of there being nc mortgage on record against the stock , there was no such incumbranco upon it as to render him criminally liable foi thus disposing of it. They seem to think that ho did uot realize the position in which ho was placing himself , and that il would simply bo n buslno.is failure sub jcct to such moxles of settlement as prevail - vail in civil rather than criminal courts The chief of police- and Woodward re turned from Silver Cily last night , not being able to fix up matters. During the afternoon J. Sims , as attor ney for J. V. Farwcll & Co. , of Chicago , caused the arrest In Ulcnwood of S. P. irinton , the other partner. It pccnis there Is another warrant out for Wood man on the latter case and the officials tried to secvo it upon him while in Silver City yeslcrdny , but Chief Mullen would uot allow It. llnppy Qunlls. On Friday while the circus was carnd- ng on Broadway , those at the corner of Uroadway and Pearl street , had their Utcntion atlractod by Iho whislling of quails near by , and upon looking around discovered ix large flock of lliem perched upon the largo cotton wood In front of Captain Brown's railroad ticket olllcc. They sat there whistling and looking round with apparent satisfaction , to see Iho crowd of people passing to and from J. G. Tipton's real estate olllccs where they had been making deals that made them equally as happy as the little birds. Ono little quail said to another , though we are but birds wo have more sense than a great many of people , because when we want a nest wo build ono , but when they want a nest they rent one. The other little quail said , 1 think so too dear , because they can go lo Tipton , THE HitoKEit , and buy ono so clump and on such easy payments. Mrs. F. H. Stewart's display of fall and winter millinery ; choice designs in imttnrn tints and Parisian novelties are now open for your inspection , at 341 Broadway. _ _ The Cuy'H Had Hoys' . Judge Aylesworl.h yesterday cleaned up what had been left behind the circus. There wcro only a couple of what might be termed circus cases : the city being ox- coplionably quiet and free from crooks and fakirs. \Villiam Keith when arrested was too drunk to give his name but yesterday put up $7.60 out of the ? 37 ho had upon him when arrested and returned to his Omaha home , T. S. Campbell was arrested for at tempting to pick the pocket of Mrs. Arthur Harrington as she was leaving tlio circus. Patrol Driver Nicholson took charge of him and the judge con tinued his case until 0 o'clock Monday afternoon. John Maacdley , n vagrant , was re manded for hearing on Monday after noon , he having been arrested as a sus picious character ; also a largo lot of old clothing was tound near where ho was arrested. Ed Ross , acolorod porter in a gambling house , was placed before the pohco judge next. He looked as if ho might have been attending a swell society event in colored circles previous to his imprisonment , llo wore a swallow-lailcd coat when he answered to the charge of being drunk and disturbing the peace. Ho pleaded not guilty , but as the city marshal stopped up and said , "Judge , I like lo bo sworn in this case , " and gave his testimony. Rosi was fined an additional sixty cents , making a tottil of $10.20. E. D. Halo pleaded guilty as a common drunk and uaid $7.GO. Dug Burns , for punching the notorious young Peterson , was allowed to co free , to appear to-morrow afternoon and bring in his witnesses. The case against A. Decker was dis charged , and ho promised to leave the city. city.A. A. Scuiler was allowed his freedom af ter having spent two nights in jail , llo is lo appear on Monday , when his case isle lo be settled. file AVtiinttiRS and Ycslorday was a red lellor day in Ihe history of gambling at Council Bluff's. Hereafter no ono can claim that there is no "sport" nor "blood" in Iho city. A well known resident of this city spent a few hours "bucking the liger. " and in consequence created some little excitement for the time boing. Blue chips at $125 a stack wcro used until ho was nearly $5,003 out. Then ho used yellow chips at $500 a stack. As high as $3,000 was won and lost on one turn of the cards out of the box. Most of the lime his bets upon the table aggregated $1,500. Ho bet as high as $500 on the high card , and six times in succession got action on $1,500 , which helped bring mm out of the hole , llo got in over $5,500 , bul luck finally turned long enough to allow him to cash in $8,000. In the first two hours he lost his $5,500 and in the next hour had won the $8,000 lo cash in. This is , without doubt , the largest faro bank playing ever in this city. At any rate it is the biggest in the memory of those who now make a liveli hood upon the green cloth. If Ihoro is anybody who enjoys gamb ling that can't get "limit" enough , it looks as if perhaps this garno might have satisfied them. During nil this heavy gambling there was only an ordinary number of lookers- on , as the player already had the reputa tion of being the hardest better In this city. After After cashing in the $8,000 it only made him a $300 winner for the two days past , lor Sale Choaj > Lots near the bridge to parties who will build at once.
