UIIICAQO , Sept. 10. [ Special Tuleeram to
tbo UKK.J "The crov\d"'intorprotcd thn ROV-
eminent ostlinnte of the wheat crop nt be
tween 480,000,000 and 10,000,000 bushels. No
body has tiei-n doing any very close figuring
on the wbeat crop lately , nml consequently
nobody \VRS either greatly surprised , elated
or disappointed at the result. Speculation
vraa more active to-day than at ony time for
a month. Jones , McCormlck & Kennctt
made December the lively month , by free of
ferings , which broke the price from 73c to
73c. The crowd was bulllshly disposed and
took about 1,000,000 bushels of December at
73c and above. Several strong local opera
tors and brokers were actively bidding for
property , but they did not appear
to bo so anxious to acquire wheat
as to elvo the market their moral
support. October opened at "OJic , ranged at
70 > (3CO ( c , and closed at 70c. December
rested at 7Jc. the bottom. May opened at
779.c and ranged from that point down
to 7Uc , which was the closing quotation. The
1 o'clock range Is M@c under yesterday's
last prices. Cables were dull and featureless.
General speculative buying was light The
business done was almost \fholly for local
and Now Tori : account , with perhaps a small
"surlnkllnK of. orders for foreigners. The es
timated Increase in the visible supply is
1,000,000 bushels.
Corn' was active within a ranpo of % c to
day and closing iirlrcs were about the same
to , o under ( ho latest bid prices of yesterday.
There WAH a largo speculative business trans
acted , especially In the May future , ana
BO mo but -round lots changed hands.
It was , In fact , the most active
session of the week In tlio corn pit. No two
operators could lietiro out the same results
on thu crou from the agricultural bureau
estimate * ! the condition , which was made
publlc.todaSome of the bulls attempted
to prove that If the government estimate of 8
points reduction was correct the crop could
not possibly be mndo to yield over 1 , 150,000.-
000 bushels , while by some traders the esti
mate was 1,000,000,000 bushels. Hut follow
ing up the averages anil estimates of last
month , the crop will bo lVJO.ooo,000 bushels.
a decrease of uo.ooo.ooo bushels AS compared
with last month's iicures. To-day's Inspec
tion returns were pretty close to anticipated
arrivals and lake charters were the smallest
of any day of the week , footing np 1U7.000
bushels ot corn. Tradlnic In futures , though
heavy , was accompanied by little or no
excitement. The market opened about % c
otf at 45 c for May and gradually weakened
to 4r > Xo on the Washington crop report That
proved to be the bottom , and a reaction fol
lowed which carried May to 45Xc. The up
turn was occasioned mainly by heavy buying
by liutchlnson and the report that Armour
& Co. estimate the crop at under 1,800,000,000
bushels and that some of the oflicors of the
board horn had placed the probable yield at
1,400,000,000 bushels. The ( 'xtietne range for
September corn was 4lj/4Uffc ! ! lor October ,
4lK - c on the split to 4-J.'l@i2Kc ' together ,
nnd for November 424lJXc , with Decem
ber at tbo same. The closing prices were :
October 42fc , , November 4Js'i$4'JXc ( and May
Now \ ork was lower for futures
and exports from Atlantic ports wore very
light , tliouirh Liverpool was 11 nn lor spot
corn , the cables reporting a further advance
af fd.
Oats \vere dragging In the speculative
market , but prices held pretty steady , and
Undiluted narrowly. October Improved
from -3t/c at the opening to U.ri > , c at the
clone and May closed steady at 'M c after
selling from We to uO , ' @ : ! 0 > lc together. Atone
ono time iW e was bid lor a 5,000 bushel lot
ofTresli receipts In store , and that was the
nominal closing for seller the month.
In proalHions the neck closed with a good
showing of Interest There was no marked
activity , yet as a whole the
"business transacted was above a
Saturday average , and In October
short ribs and [ January product the trading
exceeded an ordinary volume. In the gen
eral market the reeling was also quite strong ,
though , as compared with last night's linat
quotations , year and January pork. Novem
ber , December and January lard and January
short ribs closed unchanged. September and
October short ribs , which ranged at the same
'prices , or at S8.75@8.SK ) , declined 2K@5c , rest
