SATCRDAY MARKET FIGURES , The Absence of Speculation Ono of the Principal Boar Features. A PROFOUND DULLNESS IN OATS. A Qnlot doling or tlio Week In tlio i'rovlnlon I'lt The ling Trade Varied General Market Quotations * CHICAGO I'UODUOE MARKET. CHICAGO , Aueust 27. | Special Telegram to the BKK. | The wheat market was Inex pressibly dull to-day. The absence or specu lation and a forced liquidation ot stock of about 5,000,000 bushels ot California wheat In Liverpool constitute the bear features. The rest of the news or rather the facts , for there Is no news are favorable to the bull side , llecolptsat primary winter wheat markets continue light and the forward movement towards eastern nnd old world markets keeps up without the slightest diminution. Clear ances from Uin three principal Atlantic ports I for six darn , foot up to' l,4'i,000 ! bushels I' ' \ ( about tlio same as last week ) . Western points receipts tor the same period aggregate 1,800 , : 0 bushels against l.On.WK ) bushels last week , and wustcrn points shipments for the week exceed those of last week by nearly 800,000 bushels. The movement from lake points has been especially liberal and promises to continue so. Toledo alone reporting engagements ahead for 410,000 bushels. There Is a prospect for another decrease of nearly 1,000,000 busliols In the I vl.ilblo , Kvery hour nnd mlnuto of the clay brings confirmation of the bad haivoat re- xpors from the northwest. There was some quiet buying by good houses to-day , but not plough to Hit the market out of the rut. The ( rTono was too stronz , however , to deter short ( oelllng , and In the absence from the close of f between Ilfty and sixty of the most active and inlluontlal local scalpers and speculators trading In the pit was reduced to Its narrow est limits. Fluctuations In prlco were only HC. The average and close was , however , i higher than yesterday by # & September opened at C'Jc , ranged at CMtjM'Jo and closed . nlO'.ic. October opened at 70c , ranged at 70) (370Xc ( and closed at 70' ' < ( 70Vc. De- cemoer opened at 73c , ranged at TJj < @ 7ac low , and TUJfc high , closing at 73c. There was something more than the bare finirgestlon of activity In corn , and after the first hour the tone ot the market was weak. September opened at 41' c , October at 41c , and May at 45c. The maricot cased off a bare Rhudo and then firmed up on good local buy ing , September advancing to 4lXllct Oc tober from 41c to 42c , and May trom 44J < c to 4.'il , < fc. About 11 o'clock news began to cir culate that the receipts were exceeding the estimates , that the anticipated receipts tor Monday were nearly COO cars , and that Tues day morning's returns for two days would run up to fully 1.000 cars. Eaily buyers be came sellers , nnd those who had been dome nothing turned bears. The inarkot worked off Xc. September eolng to 40j c. October to 4lc. and May to 44Jfc. Last quotations were at 4o ; < 74lc ! for September , 41c for October , and 44 J c for May. The market was safe at tlicso ngures. The receipts and shipments tor the week have kept along about even. An Increased foreign demand for cirn at current prices Is noted as one of the hopeful features. Tlio dullness In the speculative market for oats to-day was most profound. Traders showed no Interest In the deal and the lim ited business transacted was at a very law ranco nf prices , the cenoral tone bolng casv and In buyers favor. Leading features closed Jfc under yesterday's latest bids. In the provision pit the week closed In a qitlut manner. Traders of all classes showed remarkable Indllfurcnco and the day passed with little or no stir , or ovun a sutllclont change In values to occasion comment ! Fluctuations were also coiitinod to a small ranee. .January closed Kt 81'J.8-W for pork , S0.53X for lard and Si ! . ' 5 bid for short ribs. Near trading as usual , was confined to lard nnd short ribs , with Soptombur the leading delivery. For that month lard closed at yesterday's price 10.40 and short ribs 2Kc easier , or nt 97.00. October Inrd was oo higher than September , while October short ribs rested at the ruling quotation for Sep tember. CHICAGO LIVE } STOCK. CincA.00. Auzust 37. In New Fork the dealers In crockery are making a protest against the tea men , who are giving away or soiling crockery below cost. The same gift sclinmo has been prac ticed to some extent In this city , but more especially by the dealers in baking powders. The ciockery dealers , however , have not felt the competition , if It may be called such , so severely as their brethren In Now York , which is due to the rapid giowth of the crockery business incident to the rapid devel opment of the country. There Is , however , a growing sentiment among dealers In all lines acalnst the gift system , which has been desttuctlve to so many business enterprises and Is demoralizing to the trade generally.
