THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; 8ATUKPAY AUGUST 27 , 1887. ONE MORE UNFORTUNATE , Dragged to Death Amidst Most Depraved Surroundings. * _ _ _ 1 | r l HOW SELDEN WAS MURDERED. llio Story From D. J. Bullion Rail way Matters South Oinalia Notes A Nervy Urnkcmau I'rcpnr- Ing For tlio Vets Locals. Took Morphlno. About 2 o'clock yesterday morning the niotloy crowd living In the rickety two frame building In ' 'Daco alley. " was at tracted by moans of pain , to tlio room which n woman named Cora Dassott was occupying. The room being entered it was discovered Hint the woman was ap parently In a dying condition. Dr. H. S. Lucko was immediately summoned and ho atoncu pronounced It acasoof poison- ing. Proper restoratives were applied and tlicdoctor remained with tlio woman until early this afternoon when itwas thought her life might bo saved. 8ho was unconscious all the time. From outside parties it was ascer tained that tlio woman came to the house last ovemng and requeued permission to remain over night. This was granted , and about midnight she called a little pirl named Laura Wendell , who was in the house , and they started out together to IIml a ( true store. Laura was sent In , and procured the morphine which the White pirl afterwards took. At what drug store the drug was obtained cannot bo ascertained , as the llttlo girl became so frightened that she ran away and hid herself. DCora Has&ctt Is the woman whom Ollicer Clark of the Humane society forced to give up a little fourteen months old child whom she was abusing , the facts of which case have been given in the HUE. The child was taken by Mrs. Mary Hick- HOD , mother of Cora , who resides in Esta- brook block. Cora then went to Dag' Johnson's notorious den in South Omaha. The other day she returned and has been living with a man named Hrown on Eighteenth street. She is but eighteen years of ago , but ono of the most depraved women In the city. The house where she took poison is kept by an Amazonian woman named Adolina Maguire and is the headquarters of the lowest classes of all sexes , nationalities and ages. It is at tlio eastern end of "Dago" alloy , which delectable by way runs from Thirtoetnth to Four teenth streets between Jones and Lcavonworth street. The sueno in the dirty room where the unfortunate girl was lying this morning was sad and disgusting. There were bnuoti women of all shades of color and crime. Italians , negroes , mulattons , whites , etc. Men of Biich like nationalities crowded around the doorways. It was thought that the girl might rally sutlicientiy to give some reason for tlio rash act. out slio began to grow worse after mid-day and at 12:50 : o'clock pho ex pired , The corrner's jury returned a verdict of suicide. THE 1JA.TU O. B. SELOEN. Arrival of tlio Orotliorof tlia Dcccnsod 1'artlcularti of tlio Murder. D. J. Soldon , brother of the late O. H. Solden , returned from the scene of the mysterious murder last evening. The place where his late brother was living Is Manville , a small side track stopping place on the Wyoming Central railroad , about eight miles west of Lusk. Thcro arc only about twelve houses , a postoflico and a section houso. O. B. Seldon , the murdered man , was owner of the town Blto. deputy postmaster and also had eomc mining claims. Ho wont to Manville villo from tlus city for the benefit of his wife's health. On Sunday , August 14. nbout 0:30 : o'clock at night , ho and his wife wcro sitting at n table In a small room back of the postoilico , very close to a window. Mrs. Suldcn re marked that they would have to got the house sided up before the cold weatlier camo. The deceased concurred and re marked that ha would figure up the cost , turning at the samotimo to the table with his face towards 'tho window. Scarcely had ho done so when two shots wcro lircd simultaneously , breaking two lights of tlio window and extinguishing tlio lamp. Mr. Soldon fell on his face and never spoke. His wife at first thought the lamp had exploded , and placing her hand on her husband asked. 'Aro you hurt ? Are vou hurt ? " Receiving no answer slio lighted a lantern , and then saw the blood llowmg from the wound. Slio immediately ran to the door and called for help. This was responded to by Mr. Schaoflbr. a partner of the deceased , and others. Search was Immediately mmlo for the murderers but to no avail. It was found that the fatal messenger was a 63-cnllbro slug and that it had entered the body of the deceased near the breast bone and lodged in the muscles of the back. A hole was discovered in two plaster partition ? , which allowed that another shot had been fired. On tracing this up it was discovered after passing through the two partitions the slug has passed through the panel of a door , struck the ceiling of a small summer kitchen and fell to the floor , where an Indention was plainly visible. Strange to say no slug , shot or bullet could bo found. It is supposed that some of those who were first in the search took up the bullet because of some interest in the murder. Owing to the fact that the coroner had to bo procured from Chey enne , 175 miles away , the inquest was not hold until Wednesday , August 17 , when coroner John T. Challin arrived. Mr. L. J , Selden says that the Jury was composed of unusually intelligent men and the investigation thorough in every respect. Not the slightest oluo to the pordetrators of the dastardlv deed could bo found. After two days and two nights later the jur brought in it verdict that the deceased came to his death from the efleets of shot lircd by parties to the jury unknown It was supposed from tracks and othoi marks outside the window that the murderer knelt while firing and the sim ultuncous explosion would seem to Indicate cato that the intention was to lire the shots t onco. Tlio only opinion as to tin cause for the crime was splto work , bu on whom to charge it , not a person cat imagmo. Tlio ileccascd was torn norarlly buried on the prairie noai Ins late residence , the funera being oxtrcmoly sad in every particular Not a minister could bo obtained to maki a pravur , and this was by Mr. Hrooics.ai old friend of the deceased , formerly o PaplHion , Sarpy county. D. J. Soldot wont to Republican Valley immediately the funeral and brought Mrs W. A. Hrown , a daughte of the deceased , to Manviili to keep company with Mrs. Soldoi who is reported to have berne up re markably oonsidoring his illness and tin trying ordeal through which ho passed The dcceasoo came to Omaha in It&l.aui In addition to facts already published ii llio DKK , it may bo said ho was the grs blacksmith In this place , the first liver ; ttablo koopTir. and sank the first well Ho loaves all his"prooorty to his widow RAILWAY MATTERS. WIED WHITNEY'S AIM-OINTMENT. Mr. Potter is gradually filling the pos' ' lions of assistant general freight agents ibo latest being that u.Jfcinsas city , t which Fred Whitney was yesterday ap pointed. Mr. Whltnoy is ono of the boat known , most unassuming and most promising joung freight managers in the northwest. Ho has been idontilicd with railroads in this section for a number of years past , having risen from some of the low est rungs in the ladder to that which ho now holds with the support and confi dence of ono of the greatest railroad men of the times. Two years ago.Mr. Whitney acted as agent of the Chicago , St. Paul , Minneapolis & Omaha in this city , whence he was transferred to St. Paul , as the assistant general freight agent of the same road. Ho has held that position since , ana only relinquishes it to accept with greater honor and salary a similar ono on the UnlonOPaoiuo , with headquar ters in Kansas City. Ho enters upon the duties of his now position on September 1 , and will pass through this city on his way to his now position. OMAHA AND THE MISSOOUI PACIKIO. There was a meeting yesterday between representatives of the Omaha uoard of trade and General Trallio Manager Mur ray , of the Missoul Pacific , the object being to arrive at some understanding with respect to rates to this city and con tiguous points on that road. The meeting was private one , bomg attended by Mr. Grilhtts , commissioner of the board of trade freight bureau , W. A. L. Gibbon of Ednoy & Gibbon , Robert Easson of Paxton - ton , Gallagher &Co , Secretary Nattiagcr of the board of trade and Mr. Wilson , local representative of tlio Missouri Pacific. The question at issue was discussed with nut eh thoroughness with the result that it produce ! a most favorable impression upon Mr. Murray and it is thought that wiicn action Is taken in the matter , it will bo satisfac tory to our people. CATTLE HATES , ETC. At the meeting of representatives of the Nebraska and contiguous railroad lines in the Union Paciho headquarters Thursday , to settle rates at junction points , as also to determine whether or not cattle should hereafter bo shipped by the pound or car load , a committee con sisting of Mr. Kimball , of the Union Pacific , Mr. Murray , of the Missouri Pacific , Mr. Fitefli , of the Fremont , Elkhorn - horn < S : Missouri Valley , ami Mr. Hoi- Irege , of the B. & M. , were duly ap pointed to confer with the railway com missioners with a view to aiding in a set tlement of the matter , as also to adjust differences existing between certain rail roads in the states.Vhon a conclusion is arrived at , which will bo in probably in a few days , a general schedule com prehending Nebraska and Kansas points as well will bo issued. With regard to tlio shipment of cattle westward , from Omaha , it was decided that tbo rates would bo based upon the same methods of consideration as are these on cast- bound cattle , the agreement to go into force on the fifth of next month. In the question of the delay of cars by shippers before employing tlio same , the proba bility is that an agreement increasing the demurrage will bo arrived at even tually. Till : NEW KIIIDOE TOLLS. The completion of the new Union Pa- cifio bridge has brought up a question which has not yet been determined upon , ar which , if settled , both Mr. Kimball and Mr. Potter decline to shed any light. It s that of increasing tlio tolls of cars on the Union Pacific briago. When tlio bridge was constructed , and for many years later , the rate per car was $10. This was considered extortionate , and it > f course eventually came out of the par ies to whom the car was consigned. But hero was no competition. Later the .Mattsmouth and Blair bridges were con- itructed and used respectively by thn Jhlcago , Burlington & Quincy and ho Northwestern. As n consequence the tolls wcro reduced on the Union Paeific structure to $4. The cost of the now bridge , with the double track to Council Bluffs , has impressed Mr. Potter with the justness of the idea that the toll ought to bo raised to f 5 per car , and he communicated his belief to ' .lie . Chicago , Milwaukee & St. Paul , and ho Chicago , Rock Island & Pacific. Those roads , however , have objected to the raise and steadfastly refuse to pay the 3umo. But as before stated , neither Mr. Potter or Mr. Kimball w.ill speak upon , ho subject , SOUTH OMAHA NOTES. It was found in a hard flint rock , but was so ground as to render it impossible to determine whether it was part of n layer or an Isolated lump. It had all the requisites of a rich-paying ore. Caught a Tartar. Hprso traders usually got the best of a bargain , but such was not tlio case for once with Ed Hilflkor , of this city. Tlio other day'a stranger came along and traded a span of mules for Ed's team. The next day a man arrived and took the mules away from Ed , claiming they were stolon.
